If you hike up and spend the night at San Martin volcanoes, you get a gorgeous reward - a sunrise behind Tenerife with majestic peak of Teide. It's magical...you're just above the sea of clouds and the whole worlds around you just awaits for the moment when the new day is born and then, everything explodes in vivid colors...

Here we come straight to my personal favourite capture from my former trip to the Lofoten islands in Norway.

After taking ...twilight... i realized there were less clouds than before and i hoped for some stars to visibly appear. My waiting was rewarded :)

In this frame we see the light of the sparkling stars, the light pollution from Lofotens capitol Svolvaer and even a slight bit of sunlight, that was rendered by the longer exposure from behind horizon.

For me it combines different great memories and it“s the kick i needed to head out for new motives and photographic projects.

Spring is here- let“s get it crackin“ :D

A picturesque sunrise above the Alps with view of the Grat Mountain between Diepen and Rophaien. The grass on the mountain slopes appears very soft in the morning light. The contrast between light and shadow accentuates the curved slopes of the Grat very nicely.

My co-guide Skarpi was shooting another angle of this fantastic waterfall in northern Iceland, when the beautiful sunrise colors lit the clouds. I was delighted to see that the colors had also reflected on the flowing waters.
I wrote an article about shooting this image, check it out on DPReview.com.

If you'd like to experience and shoot these amazing locations under my dedicated guidance, please check out my upcoming 'Land of Ice' (south Iceland - first group sold out, 2nd group added) and 'Winter Paradise' (northern Iceland) photography workshops next January.

wikipedia:
Fort Lovrijenac or St. Lawrence Fortress, often called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar", is a fortress and theater located outside the western wall of the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia, 37 m above sea level. Famous for its plays and importance in resisting Venetian rule, it overshadows the two entrances to the city, from the sea and by land. Early in the 11th century the Venetians attempted to build a fort on the same spot where Fort Lovrijenac currently stands. If they had succeeded, they would have kept Dubrovnik under their power, but the people of the city beat them to it. The Chronicles of Ragusa reveal how the fort was built within just three months time and from then on constantly reconstructed. When the Venetian ships arrived, full of materials for the construction of the fort, they were told to return to Venice.

I have a vertical version of this scene uploaded here already, but I thought I would post the horizontal version as well. What the vertical doesn't show well, is the source of light. I was able to blend two exposures together to bring out the most of the amazing light that I witnessed this evening. This resulted in a fairly fine band of light streaking across the landscape and painting the ridge on the left. It was one of the most amazing light shows I have seen, and was fortunate to view this scene with just a few other photographers who I was camping with.

A lesson learned as to not leave when you think the light is over. It almost is never over. In this case, I waited out some boring light and saw the sky turn pink. I then saw the colors were reflected onto the surface of the water and shot the scene you see here. Using a polarizer really helped bring out the color, but also the rocks beneath the water.

It's hard for me to describe this image, partly due to the fact I don't want to sound too artsy and cheesy. The fact of the matter is, this scene just speaks of patterns and textures. Quite amazed at how well some of the forms down here flow together.

Can't you see it? The eye, the horn, the mouth? Kinda eerie to see and make out in person, but nevertheless beautiful. Amazing what our minds perceive and the things we see in nature. This is what makes these canyons so unique!

It's not hard to see why the Yosemite Valley has inspired so many artists. Legendary landscape photographer Ansel Adams traveled all over the United States capturing the majesty of the National Parks. Yosemite though, was always closest to his heart. The late Galen Rowell, also one of the all time great lanscape photographers called the area in and around Yosemite his home, both as a photographer and an adventurer. Tunnel view, one of the parks more iconic lookouts, is a photographer's dream. Looking straight down the glacially carved valley, many of the parks most famous icons are in view. In the distance is the unmistakable monolith, Half Dome. Dominating the foreground to the left, is the giant, El Capitan. To the right is Bridalveil Falls, a 617 foot waterfall that comes from one of Yosemite's many hanging valleys. Typically, Bridalveil will fall from top to bottom, but on this evening the wind was blowing, causing the falls to scatter into the rocks of the cliff. This was truly a light show to remember. 10 or so minutes after the sun had gone below the horizon I was ready to pack up my gear and head back. Sunset had been decent and now the sky was dull and flat. Then, high altitude clouds began to catch the sunset light. The clouds danced in the light for a few minutes, changing from different shades of blue, pink and purple before my eyes. The light on the clouds was so intense that they were casting their own secondary light on the valley below, creating the illusion of direct sunset light. The light faded as quickly as it appeared, leaving me just enough time to capture a few images of this unforgetable evening.

If one ever needed convincing that mother nature is an artist, a trip to Upper Antelope Canyon would suffice. It's hard to imagine that this slot canyon has been sculpted by only wind, water, sand and time. When experiencing this place in person, I thought to myself that a team of master sculptors with access to all the tools and artificial lighting they needed could not create something so beautiful.

Its been a year in the making. 4 attempts were made. 20 hours of travel time has been invested. It all came down to this morning, FINALLY a morning with some clouds, my beloved clouds!

This morning's sunrise at Abraham Lake was just spectacular! The bubbles that the lake is known for were a bit hard to find because of snow cover on the ice but the snow gave some different formations to add to the foreground.

Skårasalen above the clouds

Impressive scenery with views from the summit of Skårasalen to the surrounding peaks and the cloud-covered valleys of the Sunnmøre Alps in the last sunlight.
Despite of the moderate weather forecast, the conditions at the foot of Skårasalen looked really bad on that day. Since I had been already waiting for 3 days on a weather improvement and the even worse forecast for the next days I made myself a little indecisive and not particularly confident on the climb. During the whole tour it was drizzling slightly and the visibility was below 50 meters. At the top, the fog was so strong that only the summit cross showed that I had reached the highest point. Since the tour was quite long (3h, 1100 m) I didn’t want to give up so easy and decided to wait. After about 2 hours I finally saw the first short gaps in the clouds. The first time I had the feeling of standing on a mountain top and not still waiting in the valley. At 9 o'clock p.m. (after 4 h) were almost all the clouds far below or above me and I got a fantastic 360 ° view to the sunlit peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps and the low-hanging fog. The following two hours until sunset, gave me perhaps the best conditions I could ever experience in the mountains and repressed any thought of the temperature around the freezing point or the nightly descent... At 2 o'clock a.m. I reached the valley exhausted and happy while it had already started raining again.

NORWAY 2013
My trip to Norway in 2013 led me from the Lysefjord in the south to the Sunnmøre Alps near Ålesund and finally to the islands of Lofoten and Senja in the north. During the nearly 5 weeks trip I got many good opportunities to photograph the incredible scenery in stunning light. During some hikes in lesser known area, I tried to find a few new scenes. I hope you enjoy the results!
