You see, high above Equestria, higher than Canterlot or the mountain it resides on, there live the Ancient Ones, the first ponies in existence. The Ancient Ones represents aspects of the world, and most of them are organizes by opposites;
- Fire and Water
- Earth and Sky
- Time and Space
- Day and Night
- Wisdom and Love
So as long as the sun and the moon exist, so too are Celestia and Luna. As long as things such as fire, water, the earth, etc. exists, these Alicorns are effectively immortal. Cadence is NOT immortal, r
