I woke to the sound of the incessant ringing of a cell phone. My cell phone. Maybe I should say stolen, but I preferred the word borrowed, considering that it’s a sin to steal.
The back of my throat ached as once again, I remembered how indifferent the faces of the Council appeared when they threw me out into the packed streets of New York. I dug my thumb nail into my palm, feeling my flimsy new mortal skin break and bleed while I tried to concentrate on the task at hand.
First things first, I needed a place to live. My head swam as I stood up from my clumsily made shelter of cardboard, causing the world to tilt. Ignoring the phone still, I held my stomach in my hands, it hurting from my night spent trying to practically eat out of the trash. So unused to this sudden change in environment, I was at a loss for how to survive.
Just the night before, I had eaten my perfectly prepared dinner on the common golden pla
