The winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2013 have been announced and I was touched by the story that accompanied Andrea Gjestvang's winning entry, part of a series of shots entitled One Day in History. As Photographers, we often capture and document things that others find disturbing, distasteful or upsetting. Or all three to be honest. Quite often we're asked 'Why did you take that shot? Why didn't you help instead?' when we capture something that showcases carnage or destruction. Or both. I have no right or wrong answer and nor do we, as Photographers, behave in a right or wrong way by choosing to click rather than extend a hand. I'm sure though, that I would only take a shot if I knew I wasn't needed someplace else, to save a life. What would you do?

Prose enthusiasts and experts wanted!Back in March, we hosted a rather successful #projecteducate week on poetry forms. You can write articles:
- About specific elements of story planning (with featured examples)
- "How to" guides.
- Interviews with dA writers who focus on story writing
- Art features
- Famous story writers
- Workshops/ Prompts/ contests based on story planning
We are not looking at short form prose at the moment, so we do not require articles on that, nor about publishing. This is about the elements that you need to plan and create a story more than the full finished product.

Anthro/Furry Networking: Conventions & DevMeetHey all! I'm coming to you again with some updates on the topic of Anthro/ Furry networking. One thing that seems to be really quiet in our community is our IRL (in real life) meets, whether it be devmeets or cons. I would really like to see more people get involved in planning or attending real-life get-togethers because I've seen the sheer awesome these opportunities bring. For 3 years now, I've been attending Furry conventions, and regional meets and it is really an amazing experience to be able to see and talk to people you have met online.More Like This
On other more niche websites such as furaffinity, people have developed regional/local meets and specific "group" pages that update when and where these events occur. DeviantART has even pushed the idea of "devmeets" which is very similar to what furry fans have put together offsite. Of course, when these regional meets grow in size, some of them become conventions, and the bigger they get, the more room for artistic and socia

Project Educate: Haiku, Senryu, Tanka, and RengaAs part of Poetry Forms week at #projecteducate, we wanted to go into a bit of detail regarding some of the more well-known Eastern forms of writing. The same way there are many forms of Western poetry, there are many forms of Eastern poetry, and ultimately this article will barely begin to scrape the surface of even the forms that it actually touches on, but within this article, there are links to resources that delve further into the subject matter, and all are worth reading if the subject interests you.More Like This

Haiku, in the classical Japanese sense, is a small poem comprised of 17 characters known as on (sometimes onji). These characters each represent one unit of sound, and each unit of sound has its own meaning which then contributes to the overall haiku. The 17 on are split into phrases of 5, 7, and 5, which is where the most commonly know

Project Educate: See the light and remember itMore Like This
See the light and remember it
Lighting in photography is a living, changing art. One of the most important abilities of a photographer is to see light and to remember it. Light is the most changing element in our daily life. We move among solid objects and among people who do not change drastically during a day or a week. But visually the appearance of our environment and of people around us may change from one hour to the next due to the time of day, the weather, or the particular source of light. Photographers are aware of these changes and store in their memory the impact different types of light have on our emotions and our subconscious. For a photographer, watching the light becomes second nature.
Some of the photographer's palette of tools:
-The angle of light
-Quality (hard or soft)
-Color

Thoughts about communityCommunity is a word that is used on dA a lot. It's a huge part of the site and the main reason why I love this place so much and have stuck around for so many years, even when I haven't had time to indulge in my art or felt like sharing it for whatever reason. I've made true friends here who I care for deeply and can't imagine not using dA in some capacity to keep in touch with all of you wonderful people.More Like This
The thing with a community, in my opinion, is that it's kind of a by-product. I don't mean that in a bad or belittling way. What I mean is that you can't actually force a community to thrive, or even to exist. You can provide a context (like a website or a message board or a physical-world organisation) and tools (like comments or chat features online or a room to meet in for offline events). You can invite people to join in, encourage them to interact and even moderate destructive or negative behaviour but you can't make a community - it's something that happens by itself, th

Self Harm Awareness Day 2013: RecoveryHello allMore Like This
You may have seen ^NicSwaner's wonderful article on Self -Injury Awareness day already, but at this time of year, I always post an article on this subject too anually. Self Harm is a topic which is personal to me as I am sure it is to many others. It's been 8 years since I last harmed myself, and since then I have been involved not only in personal recovery, but projects and organisations that also offer help, information and advice to those who need it.
Today, March 1st, is Self Harm Awareness day all over the world. It is a day where people are encouraged to look beyond stereotypes, ask questions and try to understand a little more about self harm. It is also a time where I feel it is important to speak out about personal experiences and raise the awareness beyond sharing the facts.

Let's Live The DashI read at a Funeral, for the first time, today. The reading I chose was actually a Poem I had written some time ago. I knew it off by heart, but I pretended to read from the paper anyway, because a security blanket was needed. Paper can give you that, sometimes. My reading hasn't provoked this journal, but rather, the one that my Mother chose to read after I had spoken. It was written by somebody I'd never heard of until today.More Like This
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone,
from the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
Untitled is just a synonym for lazy.Well, the color poem form I introduced to dA was a rousing success, but interest of late seems to have died down. You know I'm right. How many times have you stumbled into an ordinary piece with a beautifully creative title? And it's not something

The article afterwards opened up my eyes when I read it, whilst Bradley's views are strong and many disagree with them - he does have an underlying point. Anything funded or maintained (or not maintained) by tax money belongs to us and we should be able to use it as we like as long as we don't permanently damage it or cause harm to the citizen body." What are your thoughts on the legalities and permissions of Urban Exploration? Do you agree or disagree with Bradley? Have you been 'caught out' Urban exploring in the past? So this week is more about covering a few basic bits and pieces, and giving a bit of education on topics that people have recently been asking about. So without further ado, here's what you can expect this week:More Like ThisMonday 13th May

Upgrading to jQuery 1.9One of the most time consuming tasks involved with running a large website can be upgrading libraries. Of course we do this all the time, but sometimes those libraries are used across the entire site. One of those libraries that we use at deviantART is jQuery. Unfortunately, we got a little bit behind with keeping jQuery up to date and we were still on version 1.7. But over the last couple of months, #dt has upgraded the whole deviantART network to jQuery 1.9. As you may already know, this upgrade can be slightly challenging due to the number of changes that break backwards compatibility.More Like This
The first thing that everyone attempting to upgrade from an earlier version should use is the new jQuery.migrate plugin. This plugin is bundled with jQuery 1.9 and will generate console warnings when deprecated features are used. Without a doubt, this is the most helpful tool available for finding parts of your site

Sans serif — Italics & weights
In the previous article of the typography series I presented some of the basic principles of type design and we started designing a geometric sans typeface such as Futura. In this article we will expand that typeface and add italics and alternate weights. Or rather, I will show you how to design italics and briefly present how you can modify your regular weight typeface to create alternate weights rather than having to re-draw the whole letter.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your art style.
Hey there, I am an independent self-taught painter from Slovakia. As for my art style, I do a lot of watercolour / mixed media experiments on paper, depicting people and figures, but what I do with oil and acrylic on canvas is completely different.
How did you find out about dA?
A friend invited me to join, he is a member for long years. I was skeptical at first, but today I can't imagine functioning without dA. If brings a great deal of inspiration into my everyday life.

A few days ago #Elocutionists received a huge helping of prize donations for an unnamed contest the likes and scale of which have never been seen on deviantART before. What is it, you ask?
It's a slam. A poetry slam. And it's Louder Than dA Bomb.
A poetry slam is a "no holds barred" spoken word competition. Poets are encouraged to alliterate, rhyme, shout, whisper, zing, compliment, parody, satirize, improvise, recite, quote, play with words and even sing if the opportunity arises.
For the longest time the #Elocutionists team have wanted to hear the roaring voice of literature, and this month we don't want to hear just any spoken word for a chance at prizes— NO! We want to listen to a writer's passion, emotion, and drive to keep being who they are; their inspiration to keep writing as they will and we want to hear you que

Image Adjustments and Cropping in deviantART muro
Last week, we launched a new set of tools for Muro to Beta Testers, and thanks to the efforts of the Beta Testers in reporting bugs, and $mudimba's quick work fixing those bugs, we are launching these tools to everyone!
The new "Adjust" panel allows you to adjust a variety of color settings, including contrast, tint, and color temperature. These changes can be applied to an individual layer or the whole image, giving you an even broader means of creating dynamic works of art!

Complications with CompositionI love seeing results on the camera screen, and through the lens. Often after I've taken a photo, I can't wait to get home and see it on the computer screen too. But my pet peeve is the maths and numbers behind getting it spot on. I can't deal with that, I loathe it, and actually it takes the fun out of Photography (for me anyway!) I know that some people love the technical details, I think that's why ~TouchedD and I work so well - he does the figuring out, I do the seeking for the shot - but if you're purely a creative type with no passion for delving into technicalities then hopefully this article will be able to help you.More Like This
You will find countless articles, tips, tutorials and theories on Composition. Many will throw advice and instruction at you before you can even press the shutter on your camera. In truth though, it can be much more basic than that. Before you take a photograph, think about why you're taking the shot. I know this doesn't work everytime, because often (like me)

They both have layers! And they both can make you cry. The deviantART journals have two different structures. Urban ExplorationUrban Exploration is the examination, and often documentation, of normally un-seen or off limits places. It's becoming an increasingly popular 'hobby' and for some, something much more serious. This week we're looking at a specific Photographer and his chosen subject - linked directly in with Urban Exploration.More Like This
Wayne Levin's work recently caught my eye at a Photography Exhibition - you may already have read about it if you caught the latest edition of Photography Fortnightly. As well as being an awesome and very unique idea, constructed creatively and tastefully - it reminded me of Urban Exploration. Levin explores beneath the sea, another place that many of us don't get to see unless we venture there with specific equipment - and often training. Exploring reefs, water life and shipwrecks, Levin's work truly is an act of Urban Exploration. It just shows us that there are no limits to being an Urban Explorer and there are many un-chartered 'waters' that need to be documented and shown,

For those of you not familiar with this series, each month we'll be delving into a group that is dedicated to their members and giving back to the dA Community through exposure, hosting regular events and just being an all around awesome place for deviants to settle in and feel welcome.
In a couple sentences, can you please describe what your group is about?
#ProjectPorkchop was mad as a continuation of my original project Fresh meat which aimed to promote underrated yet talented artists found on dA with weekly articles hoping to put these amazing deviants into the spotlight. I've had a passion for promoting artists who are going unseen since I remember how much work it took for myself to get out there and be seen when I first joined the site. I thought the community could benefit from something like this and over

Well, that's how my story began anyway. Years ago, I made the mistake of going to a pro hockey game and within three hours fell madly in love with the smell of ice and the sound of blades. I left the building thinking to myself (and telling anyone who would listen to the ravings of a madwoman): "There has to be some way I can be involved in this for the rest of my life." What actually happened after that night is one of the wildest stories I've ever told and it's still a crazy ride. But getting on that ride and staying on is tricky.
So here's what I've learned so far about actually surviving sports photography

Fix that Miscat! ~Fashion Photography V.CommercialThere often seems to be some confusion over whether your Fashion Photography belongs in Photography -> People & Portraits -> Fashion Portraits or Photography -> Commercial Photography -> Fashion. Unlike other galleries that we are slowly defining and educating on through this series of articles, the difference between these two is quite clear cut and there are certain aspects of your Photography that will dictate where it should go. Have a read through the article and hopefully that will clear up some things if you were previously confused!More Like This
