The Machu Picchu doesn't need much introduction, it is the most famous Inca site of Peru, and maybe the most beautiful place in the Americas. The city is located at 2430m above sea-level. Machu Picchu is the "old peak" on which the "Lost city of the Inca's" is built, right behind is Huayna Picchu, or the "young peak". It is believed that it was built around 1450, at the height of the Inca empire, as an estate for Inca Pachacuti. Because of the position of the city, related to the sacred landscape, it was also a religious site. Most religious sites were in alignment with key astronomical events, as it is the case with Machu Picchu. By 1572 the city was abandoned, as a result of the spanish conquest. As the most sacred buildings were intact, it is logic to assume that the Spanish never found the city.

For a long time nobody knew about the ruins, except for locals living in the Sacred Valley, until Hiram Bingham rediscovered the city for the National Geographic Society in 1911. He returned several times to Peru and the Machu Picchu to direct the restaurations. Many excavated pieces were taken away to the Yale University, with which the government of Peru has a long standing discussion for retrieving the artefacts. A part has been sent back, but there is still more to come.In 1983, the Unesco declared the Machu Picchu a world heritage site, discribing it as "an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization".

This photograph is taken in Gerendal in South-Limburg. The valley is well known for it's Orchid-fields, sadly we couldn't see the orchids as it's still winter time. I hope to someday return when the fields are in bloom (:

Another thing about the place is that the landscape has hardly changed since medieval times (such as the hedgerows surrounding the road).

Sail Rock,
Cathedral Cove, New Zealand

Cathedral cove is an icon of North Island located near the town of Hahei. On a holiday weekend, we stayed a few nights and visited the cove on a few occasions getting a variety of different conditions. This was taken with a big stopper on an evening facing away from the sun.

This has been a long time coming. Fanart for my absolute favorite Youtube show. I seriously hope these guys continue to do the show for years to come.

Whenever I'm having a bad day or just feeling down, every Wednesday there's a new video from them, waiting there to cheer me up. They remind me of my own friends and I playing videogames, and their reactions and commentary always bring a smile to my face, no matter what.

From left to right, we have Nick, Paul, and Josh, and in the background, the gone- but not forgotten- Dom, and his sweet mustache.

Merry Christmas, guys!

The shot I had actually wanted to get during the same hike we shot Lava Kiss:

Once the skies cleared, I set up to do long exposures. The hardest thing was how bright the lava would get, as my lens has some particles between the elements and is prone to flaring. This was one of the few mostly clean-of-flares shots I got!
