"Watch it, samurai, I've already disarmed one and I haven't even warmed up yet. You wouldn't want to get beaten by a mere geisha, would you?"

"This isn't a competition!"

"Oh, isn't it? So the two swords are just for show ..."

"Shut up and fight seriously!"

"You try fighting in these sleeves! I'd have a better chance strangling him with the fabric!"

Alternative titles included 'Pirates Versus Ninjas' and 'Memoirs of a Gay-Sha' ...

I apologize for the massive filesize, but after spending days on the nightmarish details, I didn't have the heart to shrink this one down too much. 'Tis my entry for :iconthe-oc-consortium:'s Genre-Bending competition: take your OCs and put them into a place or scenario they'd never usually wind up in. The more creative the better. Originally I jumped on the opportunity to throw the HAT crew into a science fiction world or maybe the American prohibition era (James Hunter as a hard-boiled P.I. stamping down on 'The Frog's smuggling ring for liquor was just too juicy), but on my way to lunch one day a friend and I passed a music shop playing Chinese opera, and bam, this happened.

Wire-fu Japanese shogun movies meets Honour Amongst Thieves: In a war-torn Japan, the warlord Santiago plots to overthrow the neighboring lord, intent to claim his lands and properties as his own. Louis, who's family and lands have already been razed to the ground by Santiago, overhears him plotting with his generals, and with designs of his own he disguises himself as a geisha to gain access to James's palace. Once there he alerts him to the enemies bearing down on his borders, but it may already be too late ...

Yeah, got the blurb for it, too. I don't know much about Japanese culture and history, though, so despite having lived there for five years it's probably full of holes. Nevertheless, it was a fun and interesting challenge.

Now, back to work ...

It's not often the Commodore gets to be the one in charge of the situation; I don't blame him from smart-assing when he can. I'm no longer certain if James will be in the final draft of the animated short, so on the off-chance he isn't I took the opportunity to fancify his attire to nightmarishly-detailed-to-animate proportions for the heck of it.

And Louis in white because nothing quite says "I was shot" like a big red bloodstain on your favorite embroidered coat.

Older comic I finally got around to coloring, kind of a follow-up to this one:

This of course takes place in the fictional land where Louis and James get past their differences enough to become frenemies against the Spanish. The land that does not currently exist. Lazy backgrounds are lazy.

Another older one from the land of fictional escapades where Louis and James don't completely hate each other enough to pull off some heists successfully. I just like to visit this land from time to time, especially when stressed with school. And because I wanted to slip a Firefly reference in there.

"Quick" birthday card I threw together at the last minute for my classmate Aliyah, who's also studying 2D animation at LASALLE. She has the biggest ladyboner ever for my flamboyant, fictional pirate, and it's actually kind of amusing to watch. She's been denying his fictional-ness and has relentlessly begged me to make Louis bi for her. Sorry honey, he's still gay as a maypole, but I convinced him to give you a big ole' French kiss for your special day.

I know I have other obligations to tend to, but I hate leaving unfinished work floating around my harddrive. This is an older comic from a few weeks ago already that I finally got around to coloring. Over the course of their character development so far, Louis and James's dynamic has gone through several changes, and I think has evolved for the better. This comic better explains their canonical relationship.

James is no homophobe, and his hatred towards Louis stems as a result of his patriotism to England and obligations to the law (government). Given how I just finished a 5,700+ word dissertation on organized religion and homosexual discrimination, Santiago is now the character that has more issue with Louis's "foppishness", out of a sense of disgust more than anything.

Not that it won't stop James from using that word, if only because Richard Johnston has such a wonderful way of spitting out those insults.

More in the "Franchise It" vein, though I don't think I'm allowed to submit more than one entry to :iconthe-oc-consortium: for their current contest. This image is more for fun, though I did use it as an opportunity to play around with a more detailed and slightly less caricatured style of the characters, should I turn HAT into a graphic novel.

I've wanted to do a silly Assassin's Creed/Honour Amongst Thieves (Honour Amongst Assassins?) crossover for a while now, and was finally inspired after watching :iconglasmond: and :iconschpog: brilliant AC-Cosplay skit, here: [link] Seriously. Go watch it. Hilarious and nostalgic all at once, and their costumes are phenomenal.

'Tis "Jamezio", Santiago as a Borgia heavy guard (you know, those tough b**tards who are near impossible to kill), and "Louisnardo" da Vinci, though with all that hair and that outfit he does cut more of a Salai figure.

Enjoy.

It's that time of semester again, the time when I need to plow through my dozens of folders to organise my sketches into some sort of presentable order, to submit in my project treatment. While going through my files I stumsbled across some pictures from last semester that never saw the light of DAy, on account of how busy I was. It's time I amended that.

Development for characters that don't appear in the HAT animation, but play a pivotal role in Louis's backstory, should I get around to turning the production into a graphic novel. I greatly enjoy designing family members for characters, trying to make the faces resemble each other without becoming clothes is always a challenge, and having them distinctly portray an aspect of a character's personality without alienating them from the rest of their family is lots of fun for me.

Also lots of sketches of Louis's boyfriend back in France, and his boyfriend later in the Caribbean. None of these designs are anywhere near final, but their development is on hold until such a time as my major studies are out of the way.

Oh, and an older comic I never got around to colouring.

More recent character sketches and development from this year. Every detail on a character has a reason for being there.

14 pages from my sketchbook from last year that I simply forgot to upload until now, I apologise, Santiago, you always seem to get the short end of my stick.

Some of the character development here is no longer canonical, such as most of the events now taking place after the Signing of Utrecht, which is when Louis sails to the Caribbean; only James and Santiago are veterans of Queen Anne's War.

... You'll Be Mine!
-----

Our very own :iconshendin: is hosting another competition over at :iconthe-oc-consortium:, this time the category being "Franchise It". I had about a dozen different ideas for this one, but in the end they all fell through due to time constraints and animation timetables. However, I like to try to contribute in any way I can to this little group, so I threw together this "quickie" entry.

And if you can't figure out by now which franchise I'm spinning off, then you seriously missed out on a childhood!

'Tis my very own Louis Despatis, flamboyant pirate extraordinaire, dressed as Jareth the Goblin King from 'Labyrinth'. This, of course, means he's decked out in more glitter than should be legally allowed, because he's already a bit of a glittery poofter without the added Goblin-ness.

And his niece, Celeste, as Sarah, naturally; because Louis would move the stars for no-one but her.

Coloring techniques and palette is a little tip-of-the-hat to :iconpika-la-cynique:, who's Labyrinth art and wonderfully quirky webcomic 'GND' kept me going through many an angsty day as a teenager.

At long last!

I am overwhelmed and overjoyed, a little frightened, and mostly humbled by the amount of attention and feedback Honour Amongst Thieves has been getting. What started as a simple concept for a three-minute short for my final year of animation has turned into so much more, and all because of the support I have been getting from you all here. I have to admit, when the going gets tough, it's hearing my art and my characters have brightened someone's day that has me gritting my teeth and trudging onwards. For that, I thank you all.

Even though I'm still busy with college, consider this a desperate attempt to give back to the community that has shown me so much support. Several weeks ago I asked if you had any questions to ask the VAs and myself about ... well, anything, really. This is the result.

I've been sitting on this for almost two weeks now, and only just managed to squeeze in the time to edit it. Unfortunately, there were so many questions we didn't even get through half of them, but once college lets up I'll be sure to see to it that we eventually work through them all.

Thank you guys so much for the support, constructive feedback, helpful tips and tidbits, and generally for just being an amazing group of people. I don't care if I sound like a Hallmark card, I mean it. Thank you, and stay awesome.

I'm about to enter the Bog Of Stench No Return rushing to meet the deadlines of project after project I've fallen behind on, so I will have very little time for personal art in the upcoming month, Louis comics included. Even though I drew this days ago, consider this a temporary parting gift: a little non-canonical banter I finally got around to coloring.

At no point in their official story do Louis and James wind up so desperate as to share the same bed, or at the same "party". That said, I wouldn't put staging such a scenario past our frilly French pirate.

EDIT: Sorry to constantly spam your inbox with this one. Some of you may have noticed the animation so far has slightly more detail than was on the previous character sheet, and I've finally gotten around to updating this reference to match. Louis's tights are now off-white to differentiate them from his boots, and James has epaulettes this time around. I also took the liberty of adding a point of reference for Louis's height sans heels, since many people have been asking about it; he is shorter than Santiago, but taller than James.
-----

A compilation of turnarounds for all three main characters from my upcoming animation this semester at LASALLE, College of the Arts, plus a height chart to show their relation to one another. The final animation will be over three minutes long, animated on TV Paint; hopefully adding shine to Santiago's armor will be easier there than using traditional mediums. James's uniform has been altered slightly to be more historically accurate based on this illustration: [link] and Louis is ... Louis.

Take it from me, with that much makeup on, Louis has to scrub to get it off; "pancake" makeup is so aptly named because of how thick it is.

Louis evens the playing field. Louis: 1, James: 1

These are organised to be presented in my project proposal, but for those interested in my thought processes while I design the characters in HAT, hopefully this gives you some insight.
