Yep, that's a fisher cat, not a fishing
cat. These guys are a species from the YA fantasy book I'm writing currently. In appearance they're mainly based on servals, but their behavior and habitat is quite different. This particular one is the main character in my book. I'd tell you his name, but... he doesn't have one. Not because I haven't thought of one for him yet - the fact that he hasn't got a name is actually part of the plot. He's... not quite what he appears. ^^
Anyhow! This is a quick illustration/concept art piece I did the other day, and it's not quite so polished as I'd like, but overall it's make me really happy because I've been struggling to work out a style similar to this for some faster and simpler pieces.
I've been working on using reference photos to improve my skills, without becoming overly dependent on them. (I've been realizing that I've drawn so many dragons in recent years that I get a bit lost at sea with some of the features of real-world creatures. XD) In this particular case, I had previously done a study sketch based on this stock photograph: www.everystockphoto.com/photo.…
. For this piece, I looked at that sketch a couple of times to check details for the head, but otherwise drew it without references.
