INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Eurasian grey wolf (canis lupus lupus)
Location: Eurasia (From Europe, to China and Russia)
Size: 1.6 m long + 50 cm tail, 100 cm high weight: 80 kg
Diet: medium sized ungulates (moufflon, chamois, saiga, wild boar, red deer, roe deer and livestock), smaller prey (frogs, mice, hares) but also fruit
Conservation status: Least Concern in general. But in some countries, there are only few animals. For example in the Czech republic, there are only some 15 Eurasian wolves, so wolves are critically endangered in my country.
Interesting facts: wolves live in the packs with strict hierarchy. Only alpha male and alpha female mate. Femalethen gives birth to 4-7 cubs. Mother and father both take care of them and then whole the pack helps them to rise the pups | wolves were exctinct in the Czech republic, as people successfully killed them all. Now, wolves are slowly returning from Slovakia and some 15 wolves live in Beskydy mountains. Unfortunately, some people still want to kill them, because they are afraid of wolves | fear of wolves is officially called Little Red Riding Hood syndrome | Eurasian wolves are very adaptable | their colourings vary a lot. | wolves have important roles in many myths, legends and fairy tales. They fascinate people.

I spend wonderful days in Germany's Lueneburger Heide. There is a zoo, I visited some months ago - you may remember these two pictures: Puppytime Protection of a mother
They had four beautiful timberwolf pups. But when I saw them the other day, there were only three left. One of them died, very very sad. Luckily, the three remaining pups seemed to be very healthy as well as the parents and the older brothers from last year. So I hope it was just a stupid accident. And all of them were wonderful models and made these days very amusing and lovely.

A word in personal matter: I'm using instagram now, and I would be very happy if you'd join me. Just follow me under instagram.com/binegu .

Sadly, my premium account has expired, so I'm not able to click on the critique-button. But I really would love to hear, what you think of the picture if you like it or not - and if not, if you have a little hint for me, how to make it better. Thank you! Heart

When I look at the picture, I always have this Pink-Song in my mind. Sadly, one of the family is missing (there are five of them), but nevertheless, I am so so happy with this shot. It's the only one where everyone of them has a nice position and where you can see the eyes of every wolf. Taken group-pictures of animals is taking group-pictures of humans, sometimes: Someone's eyes are always closed ;P Hope you like it!

Fennec fox (vulpes zerda, fenek berbersky) from Zoo Dvur Kralove nad Labem, Czech republic.

I got to be very lucky because only a day before my visit, the zoo announced arrival of new pair of fennec foxes (they have a pair of quite old fennec foxes in incredibly huge enclosure - that habitat is SO huge that I had to laugh when I saw those tiny foxes in). They live in a new habitat that is much smaller than the one inhabited by old pair, but it is still nice size for such a tiny fox. They have a decent indoor enclosure and small but cute outside exposition which is connected. Foxes were very curious and very active, investigating their new living conditions. So they were running everywhere, checking stones, trunks and even visitors, they came as close as they could :D it was lovely. Also, this photo WAS NOT taken with a flash, of course. I never use flash when I photograph animals. The green light in its eyes is caused by natural light :) I do not think the fox is ill with eyes. That was just a light.

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Arctic Wolf (Canis lupus arctos)
Location: Canadian Arctic and the northern parts of Greenland
Size: 1.8 m long, 79 cm high weight: 75 kg
Diet: Caribou, musk oxen, Arctic Hares, seals, ptarmigan, lemmings. Arctic wolves eat all their prey, also its bones and fur
Conservation status: common. They still live in the whole of its original range, because local conditions are too extreme for humans.
Interesting facts: mother gives birth to some 2-3 pups in May. Pups are born almost black – as they get older, colour of their fur turns to white. Adults are completely white, even in summer | arctic wolves live in the pack of some 7-10 members. Only alpha male and alpha female mate | arctic wolves have shorter ears and nose than other wolves species. They also have thicker fur, shorter legs | they do not run too fast, their advantage is persistence

Eurasian grey wolf (canis lupus lupus) from ZOO Prague, Czech republic :D

Lobo, the last winter when he was a strong leader of the whole pack. Then he got weaker because of his old age, he lost his alpha position and was treated so horribly by other pack members that the ZOO decided to be merciful and put him to sleep. I miss him, he was amazing alpha...

Waki, male Eurasian grey wolf (canis lupus lupus) from ZOO Decin, Czech republic. He is dead now... but fortunately, it was natural death caused by very high age. I fell in love with him, as he was very hansome wolf - I saw him only once, but I will remember him!

And I am quite proud of this photo :D
And the title? It is often said that wolves walk absolutely quietly, making no noise. In fact, their steps can be heard without problems ;) I often sit near wolves and when they are not active, I for example delete bad photos from my camera - and sounds of walking always make me look into the exhibit, as they are a sign of new activity of wolves :)

A wolf I shot --------->

Sorry I haven't been uploading anything for the past few weeks! I have been very busy with the Lupinity Wolves 2014 calendar, but now it's finally available on Amazon UK and Amazon Germany, with free shipping to most EU countries and everything :D I'll cover the details in a journal later on...

So here's finally a new upload, one of the photos I took 1 1/2 weeks ago at Wildpark Alte Fasanerie. I just love those arctics, they are awesome :-) Despite very hot temperatures, they were following me around, being all playful, and they were taking a dip in the pond once in a while - although they seemed to be much more reluctant to do so than they were one year ago when they were still yearlings...

Here are two of the two-year-olds interacting nicely. The one jumping out of the water was fetching some kind of stick swimming in the pond and was trying to take off with it, getting past the other wolf. But he was being vigilant :D

I had my camera and lens sent in to CPS because they did a recall on the 1DX for irregular greasing of the AF mechanism which could lead to a camera failure... and I discovered they also have a firmware update available for the 400mm f/2.8 II fixing some issues with a jumpy focus drive. I can't say the camera's focus works much better, but now if it gets a focus lock, it focusses more spot-on than it did before - which especially came in handy for this particular shot :-) It's really tack-sharp and there's no visible noise in the whole picture... it loses a lot by shrinking it down though, you should see it in full size :-)
