I realize after rereading that this post might be taken as very accusatory... I am NOT out to discredit Nuzlocke storytelling as a whole, I'm out to explore the way we tell stories and the mechanisms we sometimes use to do that. The 'givens' I describe here are also called Acceptable Breaks from Reality. I don't think these mechanisms are at all 'wrong' just because they might have unfortunate implications attached, and besides, the unfortunate implications CAN be remedied or subverted with some critical thinking and plot prodding if the author really thinks it's necessary.
