Gandalf the Grey, Mithrandir, and later known as Gandalf the White is the wisest of the Maiar. For over 2,000 years, the Grey wizard worked most faithfully against the rising powers of evil in Middle-earth.

Gandalf one of the most iconic wizards of all time, and one of my very favorite characters of all time.

First Submission of 2013! This is the first in what I hope to be a long series of paintings, stay tuned for more legendary figures from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth!

My traditional work, If you are a big fan of the Lord of the Rings , you'll enjoy this new movie "The hobbit (An Unexpected Journey)". Let's looking forward to seeing familiar faces again (Gandalf, Galadriel, Gollum etc), and to Martin Freeman as Bilbo.

Actually, I’m also a ‘Lord of the Rings’ fan .lol

Glad I could have some art up. RL has been pretty busy, but always in a good way.

"Kili…" The name of his brother whispered from Fili's lips as he dragged himself towards Kili.

He had seen Thorin fall by Bolg's hand as he and Kili had rushed to his aid. Kili had been the first one struck, but still he fought on like Durin the Deathless from legend. Fili had shouted Kili's name when the arrow hit, but Kili's vigor and strength were not impeded.

Fili had felt a sharp pain in his back as he was struck by another volley, rendering his left arm useless. He turned to see another arrow protruding from Kili's middle, but still they both defended Thorin. He heard both of their names being screamed in the midst of battle, but the King Under the Mountain was more important to them than their own safety. Fili knew they had always been the reckless type.

Another attack, and a sharper pain this time. Fili was knocked to his knees as he took a second to look down noticing that the arrow was all the way through him. Another sharp pain and Fili winced. Looking over, he noticed that Kili was on his back with four arrows through him.

Fili fell forward, turning to see if Thorin was alright. He heard a giant roar and a massive body lifted Thorin, taking him into Erebor.

"Kili…" The name escaped again as Fili pulled himself up to his brother.

"Fi… li…" Kili breathed shallowly, "Uncle…"

"He is safe, brother." Fili moved a strand of Kili's wet hair from his cold face. "Beorn carried him to the Mountain."

Kili grinned weakly. "We… did it," he breathed out.

"Yes, brother," Fili laid his forehead on Kili's, "we did it."

There was a long pause before Kili drew in another breath, "Fili… you hurt?"

Fili's eyes filled with tears, "Not anymore, Kili. Are you?"

"Painful…" Kili closed his eyes as a tear ran down into his hair.

"I know, little brother," Fili stretched to wipe away blood coming from Kili's mouth, "but it will be over soon." He breathed deeply, "We will go to the Great Halls of Durin. We will see father again."

Kili's dark eyes looked up at Fili, "Scared… you?"

Fili chuckled softly, his breathing becoming labored, "A little… But we're fighters, brother."

"Yeah… fighters…" Kili coughed wetly, his breathing quickened.

"Kili… don't go… not yet." Fili held his brother's head.

There was another long pause, and then, "Honourable death…" Kili's breathing was becoming short and soft.

"Yes… honourable…" Fili closed his eyes and listened his brother's breathing, hoping to Durin that death would take them at the same time.

His breath had become so quiet that Fili was afraid his brother had passed without him, "Kili…?"

There was no answer.

"Kili!" Fili pulled himself closer to his little brother.

A shallow, wet breath came from Kili, "Together… brother?"

Fili leaned onto his brother again, smiling crookedly as a tear escaped, "Together, little brother."

The turning battle fell away from Fili's hearing and sight. All that remained was himself and Kili, brothers in arms.

This is a painting I have made for a challenge, and I had a lot of fun working on it. The scene is from JRR Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" .
I wanted to make this action scene look very epic, dark and dramatic. I hope you like the result.

Painted in Photoshop.

One of two color covers for an online game centered around the Long Winter, an event which occurred in middle-earth in TA. 2758, some 260 years before the war of the ring, in which the Rohirrim under King Helm Hammerhand held out against the invading Dunlandings in the deeping valley that, centuries later, would still bear his name.

Helm's personal story is one of a king and a great man, turned by loss and desperation into an animal, set against this elemental backdrop of the relentless cold and snowfall. Here we see him (I imagine) as his people find him one frosty morning, frozen to death, still standing watch out on the Dike. It is one of those images that heroic legends are made out of, and Helm does live on (in the legends of both the rohirrim and the dunlandings) as the guardian spirit of the Deep, awed by his people and feared by their enemies.

Old, lean, crazed Helm, honed by grief into a primordial spirit of vengeance, seemed a good single image for the game's cover; he is middle-earth's King Lear (or at least a fine contender for the spot) and like Lear - or Hidetora, his japanese stand-in from Kurosawa's "Ran," a heavy influence on my portrayal of the character - his face tells his story. I wanted him to have the feel of a stone cliff-face, too steep for standing snow-cover, rising up out of the snowy field, like the hornburg itself Link

A wonderful thing about Tolkien's stories and characters (and very appealing from an illustrative point of view) is that they have a resonance and familiarity to them; many of them, while they are independently themselves, play into this larger world of mythic archetype, as if they were merely middle-earth's versions of their stories and characters (like Turin, whose story has significant shades of Oediphus, or the two trees of the valar, evoking both the nordic Yggdrasil and the two trees in Eden). It seems fitting (and often very easy) when illustrating Tolkien's world, to do likewise. Who is this old man out in the snow? Is he Odin? Santa Claus? Old Man Winter? Jack Frost? Jack London? Jack Torrence? In a way he's all of the above, and of course, he is also Helm.
