He was rolled up tight in a hard, compact space, a shell. It was quiet. It was warm.
A thunderclap broke the egg apart, and he uncurled, yawned and hung there, suspended.
Magic flashed around and he swoll up, it was all so novel that it hardly hurt when he broke a hole in the ceiling.
More weird stuff happened, but he just plugged his tail into his mouth and sucked. It seemed like the right thing. Ponies talked, and eventually, he was wrapped up warm and taken to a cozy place.
He saw it all again, his early days with Twilight and her parents, when they still lived at her home, Twilight learning to care for him, as he learned to accept her as his... mother, their various little upsets and joys. He heard himself, learning to talk, getting used to her pedantic ways. And then the hard day, when Twilight left to live at the Academy for Gifted Unicorns, when he had to leave his friends, her family, and both of them h
