The team Alexis will use in Mortasheen in Cauldron. The incredibly awesome ~scythemantis
is allowing me to use them in
the comic, and wants only credit in return.
Instead, send him your Llamas!
This team is based off of three themes, 'cuter' Mortasheen, psionics, and electricity.
I'm making this up as I go, so if it doesn't seem as well thought out as my Arthropoid/Overwhelm by numbers/Healing theme team, well, that's because it isn't. As for the backstory, it occured to me that she couldn't exactly be raised in Mortasheen when it's just a ridiculously realistic game in Cauldron. So, instead she won some sort of a contest and her avatar becomes one of the game's major AO's. (automated opponents, the succesor to a CPU, present in augmented reality games.)
Alexis, in cauldron, is somehow immune
to psionic assault, possibly because of several Devilbird-related charms around her neck, so powerful that she can sit atop her Barbaletch will no ill consequences. This same ability makes it comparatively easy to befriend and/or enslave vampires, as their psionic mind control has zero effect, causing many of the less active vampires to disregard her existence entirely, a any creature that isn't as smart as me, and can't be eaten is useless and harmless, or at least that's the thought. This is part of how Hank was bound to the team, after another clever trap-utilizing Vampire psionically 'tagged' him, and was replaced into the team by the crafty vampire.
Swirly, the Barbaletch, is Alexis' earliest and most cherished monster, who she brought home one day as an egg, and because she hatched it, the Barbaletch imprinted on her, refusing to harm her. He and Alexis often use his powers to play practical jokes outside of battle, as a way of getting 'treats' for the partially emovorous Barbaletch. In battle, it can easily overwhelm foes even with no psyical action, using its bizarre psionic powers to force opponents and enemies to see, hear, and even smell
the entire team incorrectly. When a foe resists this mental assault, a physical attack can just as easily prove overwhelming. Wouldn't you be freaked out by a mass of bird limbs, hopping along on one foot, that wanted to tear you apart, sinew by sinew? That's exactly what Swirly does, and can often finish smaller battles with no help from the rest of the team. He gets along very well with not only Egregious, but also Coo, all sharing in avian ancestry, though none readily appear avian until close inspection.
Egregious, the Bonnagander. Being a more intelligent specimen of Devilbird, Egregious, like any Bonnagander, wishes nothing more than to dance and cause massive outbreaks of violence while doing so. Upon discovering Alexis was somehow immune to his mental predation, he vowed to destroy her, until he learned she was also an amatuer musician, playing, of all things, his favorite genre, Rock.It was then that he decided he would team up nwith Alexis, and using her musical talent to amplify his own already powerful violence-inducing psionics, take on the monster circuit. With no other target but the Bonnagander itself, a lone opponent will resort to butchering itself to satisfy its uncontrollable urge for violence, hacking and slashing itself until it is no more. Oddly enough, his best friend on the team is the Fangatan, Masque. He respects any who can dance well, or play music, and so he loves to compete with Masque in friendly, non-lethal 'dance battles,' with Alexis playing E-Guitar in the background. Combining his powers with Swirly's the two can cause an interesting tag team effect, mispercieving their surroundings and simultaneously lusting uncontrollably for blood, foes that cannot resist mental attacks will be an entertaining sight, chasing and slaughtering foes that do not exist around the colloseum, sometimes tiring themslves too far to fight any longer.
Coo, the Estrel, was another early 'pet,' which should have been remarkably dangerous, if not for Alexis' psionic immunity.Being a very strange and eccentric child, she brought it home the first time it attempted to prey on her, imagining it to be a starving young bird. The Estrel offered no resistance, as even if it could physically
struggle away, Alexis would simply grab it again and head towards home. Besides, who doesn't love a nice warm, prey infested lair? Especially compared to the dark, smelly alleyway it was forced to call home before then. As Alexis grew, she gradually came to understand the bird's true nature, and having already spent many years bonding with her, Coo began to use its full intellect, becoming a major parental figure in Alexis' upbringing, much to the relief of her parents, and began to educate Alexis on the finer points of life, such as raising a family of minions, enslaving and/or slaughtering your enemies, and of course, cooking. As Alexis grew and Coo continually fed her knowledge, the two became an odd pair, mutually respectful and always seen together. Coo likes to believe he is the most important member of the team, and that Alexis learnt everything she knows about monstering from him, although he could not have possibly taught her how to tame, physically, such a diverse array of monsters, in truth, Alexis has a good head on her shoulders and a natural talent with animals of all types, even without the degenerate vampire. He enjoys cooking odd soups and tasting cheeses, despite the fact that vampires typically cannot actually consume anything but blood and flesh, and so he cooks simply for the taste of his food, similar to humans chewing gum. Alexis is more than willing to eat after Coo, disgusting as it may seem, although her unusual health may be attributed to the thorough filtration and vampiric waste (in the form of concentrated proteins and minerals) in her food.
Carpe, the Siluro, is actually one of only two engineered members of the 'family,' created by Coo to teach Alexis how to engineer her own monsters, although the need only ever arose once, as all of the rest of Alexis' team was either rescued, enslaved or adopted, for one reason or another. His thought process is very simple, but the Siluro's natural immunity from pain and unwavering obedience make for an excellent minion, even before electric mucus is sent into play. He is the only member of the team that Hank does not detest, although the feeling isn't always mutual.
Masque, the Fangatan, adopted alexis while she was traveling through an ancient jungle, its odd protective instincts convinced it to barrel out of the brush and brutally slaughter a hidden Fangkite, tearing it in half,
swooped down to attack Alexis unnoticed. Ever since, Masque has become a loyal member of the team, and was delighted to discover that Alexis is an amateur musician, often competing with Egregious for what genre of music to play for the day, with Masque's preference being metal with a powerful Snare backbeat. Eventually, these differences in taste inspired Alexis to combine the genres, creating a powerful weapon that allows Egregious and Masque to power up simultaneously, both having music inspired strengths.
Yeren, the Dingnut, was adopted from a vehicle repair shop after an economic collapse forced the company to lay off many of its monsters. Altough slimy and smelly, Yeren is very intelligent and affectionate, and has the unuasual ability to tinker with tiny electroincs as well as larger machines, using its clamp with dextrous precision, to remove dead parts and slide in new ones. His entry to the battlefield was only very recent, after the repopularization of the Z-Mecha series of
monsters by a Mortasheen celebrity. He was entering into the colloseum with the simple forced notion that all Z-Mecha are defective, and must be disassembled, and destroyed, piece by piece.
Fido, the Sleez, was rescued from a monster pound when his previous sixteen owners simply couldn't handle him. Hyperactive as any Sleez, and as treasure oriented, Fido is often used to steal resources from enemies, or to tear through any enemy in the way of said 'treasure.' The utilization of Sleez's focus is triggered by spraying a golden powder into the faces of foes, which Sleez percieves as the ultimate treasure, collecting it in a hoard in his doghouse, oblivious to the fact that he is 'collecting' the same powder over and over and over again. For some indescernible reason, he also believes that Swirly's blood-red talon clippings are a treasure in themselves.
Hank, the Hemodusa, is somewhat of an enigma, only a member, or more accurately, slave, of the team after Alexis hired a Psionic expert to bind another vampire to her life force, forcing it to become a part of the team. This vampire then bribed another psionic expert to 'tag' Hank, swapping the life bind and physically swapping places, and ever since Alexis simply uses Hank as an unwilling minion, particularly attractive to her for its electricity based powers. He continually tries to undermine Alexis' as the 'Master' of the team, but is always foiled by Coo, Egregious or Swirly, due to his defected weakness to psionic suggestion. He is often malnourished from competing with Coo for fresh blood, especially considering Coo is often brought prey by much of the rest of the team, who view him as a paternal figure. He absolutely detests Alexis, Coo, and every other member of the team, with the curious exception of Carpe, possibly because of the familiarity and comfort factor of the Vampiric Genezoa's presence. He plans to someday get revenge on the vampire trairot who bound him to Alexis' service.
Sarabelle, the Abcoulix, was the only member of the team created by Alexis herself, after reading of its powerful electric shocks and potential to store energy like a giant battery. She then proceeded to use all that Coo had taught her, and had to try several times to create one that survived, but in the end, Sarabelle was born. The Battery Toad's personality is charcterized by huperactivity, minus the attention defecit. Being a more difficult to control electrical monster than Carpe, she prompted the design of Alexis' somewhat infamous rubber dress.
Larry, the Festooge, is the final captured member of the team, caught when it attempted to catch Alexis as prey, and instead caught her rubber, and therefore shockproof, dress. Seeing the oppotunity Alexis' grabbed its arm and yanked it forward, dropping him near an 'unexplored' dumpster nearby, and then having Masque and Carpe carry it home, adding a tenth and final member to the team. After a small amount of psionic conditioning, Larry became a true member of the team, used in battle when the foe an advantage of flight, or simply a long neck, Larry can use his stretchy arms to slap an opponent in the face, causing mild paralysis and confusion, causing the perfect distraction for Sarabelle, or simply taking down some small avain foes on its own.
And the 'pets,' Filter the Urgh, was simply found one day growing on Alexis wall, so she drops dead bugs and other
nutritious minor garbage into its mouth or posterior openings.
And Coco, the rae chocolate Schmeep. Kept as a pet, but more often used as a snack, Coco is perfectly happy to have its bones picked clean every day, more often than not it can only be seen as a red candy-like skeleton poking out from Alexis' boot. Alexis' has the disturbing habit of biting off its head first, or sticking the entire creature in her mouth and sucking on it until it melts, spitting out the dripping, slimy skeleton when she's finished and putting it in her boot.
Another wall of text, I hope you guys can get used to this, because it's really fun to put together these teams, and I'll
likely do more. All monster designs are credit to ~scythemantis
, and Alexis is my own original character. There's a color version, too.
