I saw a stamp the other day that really got me thinking. This one, to be precise.
In the artist's description, the person goes on to say how every female character is labeled a Mary-Sue no matter what her deal is, and how next to no guy (save Edward Cullen) is a Gary-Stu.
Being in the middle of developing characters myself, and with my girlfriend :iconava-1966: also working on a few, of course we would want to avoid having a Mary-Sue. But... what really makes one?
I realized, just as the artist of that stamp said, you can point at any well-made female OC and call her a Mary-Sue just because you don't like her. Same goes for fan characters.
Oh, she got within a foot of a canon character? She's a sue! Oh, her breast size is bigger than a B-cup? She's a sue! What's that? She's showing a bit of skin? What a sue! Oh, she's pretty? SUE! Oh, she's a shut-in? Self-insert!
