As a star in the fog, this desire dims until it can barely be seen.
Until I watch it slip closer to the edge and fall headlong into the void.
This memory is one I long to forget as powerfully as you wish to crush it..
Hands grasping blindly towards it as if it weren’t made up entirely of air and loss..
As if it ever really mattered in the world we created.
That world of careful desperation.
Of avidity manifesting as bloodied, aching fists,
Drops of moisture falling onto trembling mouths,
And a heart quaking in anticipation of what would never be.
Had your name ever been more than a strangled moan?
An exhausted whisper, echoing inside a heart of granite?
Slowly, I would drag my fingers across it..
Waiting with all I had left to feel it soften against my fingertips.
To feel it give way to the heat erupting from my every pore..
Though the harder I pressed, the more I felt my own bones fracturing.
The more I felt my understanding of you dissipate..
The more I felt my body cave
