Many people went a bit frustrated on not getting anything “cool” from the new Amazing Surf 2 formula recently made by Luca, aka dark-beam :icondark-beam: for Mandelbulb 3D.
If you haven't it in hand you can get it here: www.fractalforums.com/mandelbu…

Here's a brief indication on how you can get nice patterns out of it without hair pulling :D

I've assumed that you already put on the first slot the Asurf2 formula.

Asurf2 Default by batjorge

So, let's change some values:

Scale= 1.325

Min R= 0.1

FoldXY= 0.25

Rotate1 X=0

Rotate1 Y=0

Rotate1 Z= 8

FoldFiddler=0

It would look something like this:

Asurf2 Input Values by batjorge

Now go on the Julia tab in the main window or in the 3D navi, as you most prefer, and input the following values:
X= 0
Y= -1.5
Z= 0

Asurf2 Input Values With Julia On by batjorge

Now that's it, you're done basically.

Now you can zoom into different areas finding some interesting shapes:

asurf2 input values with julia onZoom by batjorge

This is a very basic indication from wich you can take a starting point. E.g. changing positive values to negative ones results in inverting the shapes and in cool variations, as well as using the fold fiddler and all other values you wish to change.
Hope it have been useful for you

  • Playing: Grand Theft Surf 2
  • Eating: Fried Asurf2
  • Drinking: Asurf2 Lager 4.5%º

Artist's Toolbox

Math and programming may look as scary subjects sometimes, but it is quite a useful tool when you are creating algorithmic art. After all, it is algorithic art =)

Understanding how your favourite software works

Of course, you do not need to be able to create a brand new fancy perfect fractal software from blank =) Still, some basic knowledge of how things work may be useful. Understanding the math behind a formula or a transformation can help you to find some cooler settings for it, or combine it sucessfully with other things. Being able to read some code usually helps, since there are very few tutorials and explanations on how things actually work (and not "add this, and then more around those sliders).

Infinitum by zy0rg

Creating your own custom plugins / formulas

Sometimes, the existing things just don't do what you want. It could be just a tiny little change in a formula. With some basic programming and math knowledge, you frequently can modify an already existing formula, for example. And maybe even create your own.

Sample parameters for logspIFS by dark-beam Square Roots 5 by lkmitch
Zebras' dance by FractalDesire coral rift by lyc
Sporogenesis by Zueuk NEXT by Aexion

It is just useful =)

Besides, you will easily find ways to use your math skills in your daily life, and same applies for programming, even if you are not planning to make it your profession. Unfortunately - or fortunately - both math and programming are pretty much everywhere nowadays, and if you believe that you will never need to use them because you are a biologist or a social worker, you may be wrong :evillaugh:

Where to find some info

Useful links for you to start with:
Wolfram Alpha: a great tool to help you with your calculations and give all sort of useful info.
S.O.S Math: lots of useful articles to learn new things or refresh your memory.

And a few tutorials and explanations:

Chaotica, right out of the renderer, no postwork :la:
A tweak of one of my recent elliptic splits, adding some pre_epispiral to it :la: (just love all the pre_ and post_ possibilities =D saves lots of weights and iterators).

I really love how it came out, really smooth <3
