But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...
The soft drumming of rain was the only thing that was keeping him awake on this freezing night, the tin roof making the sounds much louder than they were supposed to be. Soul wouldn't complain though, it was so much better than those... other sounds.
The sounds of the dead moaning and gurgling, nails clawing down at the doors and windows, the horrible eyes starring deep into you, teeth trying to bite to tear your throat--
"Soul?" A sleepy voice mumbled beside the albino, interrupting his train of thoughts. He smiled fondly and the sleeping boy next to him, running his fingers through raven black hair.
"Hey sweetheart" Soul murmured, meeting the honey eyes of Kid's "Did I wake you up? Go back to sleep, It's alright."
"Since when has it been 'alright'?" Kid murmured, shifting himself so he was sitting next to Soul, eyes starring off into the same window the other was looking through "… There's more than there was last morning, they can smell us... They can smell Blackstar's wound"
Automatically the both of them twisted around to look at the blue haired boy sleeping with ragged breaths, clutching his bandaged arm tight to his chest. Soul frowned, red eyes turning sad as he watched his best friend in pain.
"He'll get better" Kid spoke up, gently taking Soul's chin between his fingers. He has a soft and reassuring smile on his lips as he gazed fondly into the cherry red eyes of his lovers.
Soul smiled in return, leaning forward and wrapping his arms around Kid's waist and pulling him into his lap, humming contently as the reaper nuzzled into his neck.
"He'll get better, I know... It'll all get better. It has to, your dad is out getting reinforcements!" Soul grinned, resting his chin on Kid's head.
He didn't feel the raven haired boy flinch.
"All the zombies will be gone and we can all just go back to our normal lives. Who knows, maybe we'll get a small shabby apartment together-
"Soul!" Kid snapped, finally shutting the albino up. His red eyes met the others, curiosity gleaming in his eyes.
"… Dad's not coming back" Kid murmured, leaning back against the window, still in Soul's lap. His honey eyes were glued to starring at the floor as Soul's jaw dropped slightly, no words coming out of his mouth.
"… He … He left us here... didn't he... He left us all to die..." Soul whispered, not hearing anything to deny his theory. He was silent for a few moment before he cleared his throat, leaning forward and hugging onto Kid tightly.
"… I won't let them get you … I'll never let them get you. I swear on my life" Soul growled, lips brushing against Kid's cold cheek. Tough and worn fingers resumed running through dark hair, not sure if he was trying to soothe Kid or himself. "… I love you too much."
"Just don't be stupid and get yourself killed" Kid chuckled, cupping Soul's cheek with his slim hand. Soul leaned into the touch, a small smile on his face.
"I won't leave you, I promise that also" Soul murmured, leaning forward and touching his lips gently against Kid's. The reaper approved it by leaning forward and pressing harder into the butterfly wing soft kisses. They weren't hot and needy like some of the other times would result to.
Soft breaths and fluttering heartbeats echoed in both of their ears, and warmth spread through their limbs the longer they stayed connected together.
For once in a long time, they forgot. They forgot what the world had resulted to, forgetting that their life and their everything was shattering like glass around them. All they could remember was each other.
Each others taste, the feel of each others skin and the way hands entwined together. They could only remember as the stars shone above them and the moon shed it's toothy grin, as if the sight of hundreds dying around him was appealing.
Moments like these could never last forever though, and soon the two lovers broke the kiss; yet kept themselves tight against each other.
"Go back to sleep..." Soul hummed, rubbing his hand gently on Kid's back. He didn't get a response, just a soft nuzzle against his throat told him that had told him Kid was now trying to resume to go back to sleep.
"Goodnight Kid" Soul murmured, resting his head against the wall and letting his eyes shut.
It seemed like only seconds to Soul before he opened his eyes again, but the sunlight streaming in through the window told him otherwise. There was a soft grunting sound from beside him, and he figured it was probably Kid just getting up.
He shrugged and peeked through his eyes and seeing kid settled on top of him. He quickly glanced to the side and almost sighed in relief when he saw it was just Blackstar.
"Jesus man, give a dude some warning before you start stomping around, you're noisier--… Blackstar?" Soul murmured, tilting his head. Blackstar didn't respond, swaying slightly on the spot.
Before Soul could push Kid off him, Blackstar spun around and lunged at the both of them. Soul yelled and flung his hands upwards to try and pry Blackstar off, seeing he was straight on top of Kid now. With a firm kick to the stomach, the albino had sent the other into the wall opposite them, head bashing against the wall with a thud.
"Blackstar, oh fuck..." Soul whined, looking into the clouded eyes of his former best friend. His eyes were empty and his limbs hung limply at his side. All there seemed to be was an undying thirst for flesh in his eyes.
No. He promised Kid he'd look after him, he wasn't going to let this 'thing' hurt him. He promised.
"Soul, look out!" Kid yelled, breaking Soul's thoughts once again. The young reaper leapt upwards and tackled himself and Soul down across to the other side of the room, narrowly missing the zombie lunging at them.
The albino was so focused on the ninja's eyes that he hadn't seen him start walking towards him.
"I've got this one, stay here" Kid whispered, scrambling up to his feet. Soul reached to grab him but his fingers curled around thin air, missing him. He wanted to yell, he wanted to roar at Kid to come back towards me.
But I couldn't.
the other walkers would come for us.
"I'm sorry Blackstar" Kid grunted before he pulled the baseball bat that was against the wall away and above his head, arching his back slightly. With a loud and feral growl, Kid whipped the bat down and smashed the blunt weapon into Blackstars skull.
Blood and the grey matter of his brain spewed from the sudden cracks in hs skull, the clean baseball bat now bloody and sloppy. Kid didn't stop though, swing after swing he smashed the bat into the base of Blackstars skull until the bloody corpse sunk onto the floor.
Silence echoed through the small shack they were hiding in, not even a breath breaking the tension. Not until Kid suddenly convulsed and dropped to the floor, his jaws parting as the remains of whatever was in his stomach were spewed across the floor.
The albino hurried forward and moved Kid back away from the body when he was finished. The reaper coughed and spluttered, his eyes going watery as he looked at his friend on the floor.
"Soul oh god now, this can't be happening, oh god, no, no, no, no!" Kid whined, suddenly
shoving himself away from Soul's embrace.
"Settle Kid, it's alright, take deep breaths... I-It's gonna be okay! We're both okay-
"No we're not!" Kid moaned, sinking down to his knees again. He looked so small and pitiful as he gazed up into blood red eyes. "S-Soul... I.. I was..."
"Don't lie to me" Soul spat, walking hurriedly towards Kid. He crumbled down in front of the boy and grabbed his wrists, scanning the pale skin "There's no bites! You're fine! Stop saying such stupid fucking things!"
"I...I'm sorry..." Kid whispered, grabbing the his shirt and pulling it up. Littered across his skin were sharp bite marks, blood dripping down from where the teeth had punctured the skin. "I... You have to kill me Soul..."
"NO!" Soul shouted, holding onto Kid's wrists tighter "I promised I'd protect you! They're fine, you're fine! They're not even really on your skin, just a graze! Stop it, we have to go--
"Soul please. Do it for me."
Kid kept his eyes straight onto Soul, the tears now spilling over his eyelids. He was never afraid of dying, no, never. He was scared of leaving his loved ones alone. This had to be done though, there was no choice.
He was not going to harm Soul.
"Kid... please" Soul hiccupped, looking up with tears rolling down his face. Never once had anyone seen the scythe so broken, so crippled. It was... agonizing to watch. "I don't want to lose you... you're all I have left, I can't do it!"
"You have to" Kid sobbed, jumping forward and wrapping his arms tightly around Souls shoulder and burying his nose into the Albinos shoulder. Soul didn't respond, he just thought over and over in his head-
'I broke my promise, I broke my promise, I broke my promise.'
"I... I'm so sorry Soul, I'm so sorry... I love you so much, I'm so, so sorry" Kid shuddered, looking up to meet the puffy red eyes of his lover "I love you..."
Soul blinked and lunged forwards, smashing his lips against Kid's. That was the final straw for both of them; and the two of them just collapsed into each other in a flurry of kisses and embraces. The salty taste of shed tears were mixed in with the kisses, only reminding Soul of what was to come.
"I won't do it..." Soul murmured, once the kisses were broken. Kid broke, he knew what he had to do now. very carefully, he slipped his hands into the back pocket of Soul's jeans.
"You don't have to, Soul" Kid murmured, sweeping white hair out of red eyes "… I'll do it for you..."
"What? Oh god, NO-!!
Soul sat there, watching in what seemed like slow motion as Kid's body fell to the side. He felt the wet blood splatter against his face and in his mouth, but that changed nothing. His eyes were all on Kid, shell shocked.
The light body hit the floor with a thump, breaking the utter silence that followed just
after the gun was fired.
"Kid... no, oh my fucking god, no, no!" Soul yelled, crawling on top of Kid's body and grabbing his shoulders between his hands, shaking the body violently. "Get up now!!"
The shacks door was now close to breaking as more zombies pilled up against the weak door frame, smelling fresh blood and being attracted by the noise. The albino hardly noticed though, he was once again, stuck in thought.
'Kid and Blackstar are gone... Lord Death has abandoned us... The girls have run away... zombies are about to storm in and eat my boyfriend and my best friends bodies...'
"My brother always did say..." Soul murmured, flopping onto the floor in a sitting position with the gun in his hand. "In an emergency, always, always..."
He lifted his hand up, pressing the cold steel of the barrel of the gun to his temple. The door crashed open and zombies started streaming in. Hungry, empty eyes targeted straight for the Albino, but he didn't even flinch.
"Save the last, for yourself... I'm sorry, Kid."
It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...
