“You look great!” said Nym, in as cheerful a voice as she could muster.  Her attempts to smooth over Shadow’s mood were met with a low quiet growl.

“Seriously, red is totally your color.  Harp agrees, you need something to improve your public image.  No offense but you’re…  well, you’re pretty scary.”

“That’s the point, little leaf.” Shadow muttered threateningly.

“Oh.  Well uh…  Haha I’m sorry then?” she patted him on the cheeks nervously, his growl intensified.

Nym decided it was time to leave as soon as she saw one of the blossoms wither with heat, emitting a thin wisp of smoke.  Yep, time to get out of here.

Finished commission for RalenFox, of my very own Nym and Shadow!  <3

Finished large watercolor commission for RalenFox!  Ralen and his little rodent buddy, Tofu, engage in a high spirited race.  Despite his little legs, looks like Tofu is holding first, good job little guy!  I LOVED painting this one, I used a lot of newer watercolor skills I've picked up over the last few months to complete it.  Liquid frisket to mask off the characters so the background washes could be isolated.  Salt in wet washes to create nice textures, though I later had to paint over most of it to get the darker blues along the edges.  New paints with better pigment load, and even more gouache too!

8" X 11" prints of this piece are available for $15 each, email me if interested! wolfnymph at gmail dot com

Done on 8.5" X 11" 300lb coldpress Fabriono paper, in watercolor and gouache

Another artistic freedom watercolor piece, this one was from the first round for Ralen Fox!  I wanted this character, Ivy, to look like she is licking the "lens" so to speak.  Hope I got that across, this one had some really fun textures to play with.  Prepare yourself for kitty kisses!  I spent all night painting last night, and finished the majority of the second round.  I expect to open for more of these sometime in the next one or two days, since they are going by so quick.  Keep an eye on my journal!

Long time no upload!  I have a bunch of art that I just haven't been posting, I'm so sorry for that!  I'll start with this portrait that the wonderful Ralen Fox commissioned from me, of my very own character Nym.  :3  Never a serious moment with this gal, I swear.  Be serious Nym, we need your portrait for the TeaFeathers Gazette!  Ah whatever, this is good enough...   ;)

I was lucky enough to be commissioned for this piece by a wonderful patron, someone who has been there to support some of the bigger personal illustrations I've made in the past, RalenFox!  Thanks to Ralen I was able to create this piece to show this moment in Nym's life, when everything changes for her.  I was waiting to upload this piece so I could flesh out some details.  Originally I was going to write more, but I decided on paring it down to a single page story vignette, keeping the details a bit more vague.  This moment is the beginning of the story I've come to dub "TeaFeathers", the world for which I am continuing to build!  You can read more about TeaFeathers in a tumblr I've set aside for the very purpose of world building - tea-feathers.tumblr.com/

The Beginning

"Nym knew death well, the sting of loss was familiar. Her last surviving grandparent passed on when she was a young kit, it was the first time she fully understood the empty space a loved one leaves behind. Not too many years after, a friend of hers died trying his first flight too early. His young wings unable to support him, he plummeted clumsily to the canyon floor to his end. She had also seen patients die in her mother's healing room on a few occasions; people she had seen around the village, friends of friends. There are no true strangers in such a small town. It is in the nature of a living things to end, whether through the gradual degrading of the body or by succumbing to one of the many dangers of the world. But this loss shook her in a way no previous death had. This one had spirited away with a piece of her soul upon departure, leaving her a half empty.

She tried to be present for her grieving family, to gather together in the way Alecani do when someone they love dies. They needed her more than ever right now. Yet she found herself drifting, not fully feeling the grief. Just letting her mind pass into a numbness she could not fully describe. She would see her family members cry, watch them leave with offerings for the grave, but she was unable to shed any tears. Not being able to share in mourning, she felt she was hurting her family in some way. She felt herself a burden.

One early morning before the sun came up, Nym quietly left. She did not plan her departure, she did not know where she was going or how long she would be gone. She left no note, and took no belongings. Pushing off the stone porch, her wings spread, she felt the cool morning air fill her lungs. She relished the sensation of the soothing coolness filling her chest and chilling her throat. Onward over the endless horizon, she pushed her body past her breaking point. She focused on the feeling of burning in her flight muscles, the tightness in her chest as she struggled to breathe. The landscape was a blur, she paid no mind to the passing hours as she ventured on. How long had she been flying? How far had she come?

At some point in her seemingly endless flight, the tears finally came. She sobbed and sobbed, tears staining her face, the light of a new morning sun catching them in a glint as drifted away from her. All strength left her body as she descended into the verdant forest below, breaking the canopy and finding herself beneath the branches of a vast tree. She wept into the roots, little spirits gathering to touch the places the tears soaked into the moss. The sounds of her grief echoed pitifully into the old grove. Distant deer turned an ear to listen, birds ceased to sing, and the little spirits gathered in number around her. Their light faded as they took on her grief as their own, being empathic creatures. It seemed like the whole forest was weeping with her.

The weight of Nym's sadness was such that the little spirits felt compelled to sooth her in some way. With the root of the great tree to cradle her, she fell into a deep and heavy sleep as the tears slowed to a stop. The spirits called down through the roots, calling out for the help of a special plant that would help heal the wound left in her heart. Soon, little green spirals sprouted between her fur, unfurling into the feathered leaves of a grand fern. When Nym's body was shaded entirely by these ferns, the tired little spirits sank into slumber around her. The broad leaves took in the sunlight like any plant, but would instead use it to sustain Nym's body while her soul was replenished in this deep sleep; the Fern Sleep.

And there Nym lay for two years. The ferns stayed green through every season, taking in the warmth of the sun and feeding Nym's body. The creatures of the forest resumed their lives around her, and the group of little spirits ensured she would stay safe from harm. When Nym finally awoke, she had experienced a profound change that would take years to manifest, bringing her down a path no other Alecani could walk."

Full body commission for Zasha, of his winged white wolf character!  I love the simplicity of single color characters like this, it always turns out to be a striking look when the art is finished.  I really had a lot of fun with this one, because I LOVE painting wings.  As you can see I am somewhat obsessed with transmitted light through feathers, but I can't seem to stop myself!

Finished reference sheet for SaWolf, of his maned wolf character Samael 9 years older than in his original reference sheet by WhiteMantis, which is here - www.furaffinity.net/view/43882… Samael has been through quite a lot since then, and his disposition and appearance has changed a lot as a result.  This was a pretty tough reference sheet to make because drawing firearms is a weakness of mine.  But if I have a direct reference like I did for these, then I do ok.  This piece was also a special case compared to my usual commissions, in which I transferred the copyright of the resulting image to SaWolf.  Thus the different watermark at the bottom there.  It's fun to see all his items and accoutrements together after taking so long to draw them all too, like little collected game items!  ^^

This Friday I will be open for new commissions beginning at 3:30pm Mountain Time!  They will be completed the following week live via my Tigerdile channel.  I'll be posting a deviation instead of a journal, so keep an eye out for that!  Prices and policies can be found here - shadow-wolf.deviantart.com/jou…

Finished pet portrait for Kimburr!  I actually finished this one a while ago and have been neglectful about uploading it.  I just LOVE rabbits, I was so happy I got to do an all-out detail pet portrait of one.  Let me use this opportunity to plug the best rabbit rescue in my state, Colorado House Rabbit Society - www.coloradohrs.org/ Rescuing domestic rabbits and finding loving forever homes for them for years.  Someday I would really like to adopt a pet rabbit when I can afford more than one pet.  =)

So happy to finally get to share this art!  This is one of a few illustrations I did for an upcoming furry art tutorial book called "Furries Furever", the third in a series published by IMPACT and put together by Lindsay Cibos and Jared Hodges.  The 128 page full color book features art by myself and several other furry artists, as we explore our painting and drawing process.  For my part, there are step-by-step instructions on how I created this piece, and a full illustration as well.

According to Amazon, the release date is August 13.  Here in the US, Lindsay says she often sees the first two books in the series at Michaels and Barnes and Noble, so those will be good places to find it.

Here are some places you can preorder it online:

"I say there is no darkness but ignorance."
~William Shakespeare
------
A personal painting that started as a speedpainting and became something of a companion to Aeturno: [link] . When I was little, I was infatuated with black holes. The event horizon always stole me away and I think in part, that small me is still standing there tirelessly wrapped in awe. The darkness instilled in me both fear and curiosity, the oldest fear, the one our bones know before we are even aware it is there . But the curiosity too, always to tempt it, to take one more step into the dark, to linger one more second. I raced the darkness and it wrought in me a self imposed exhilaration, an awareness of being alive. And then knowledge filled in the gaps and I understood better, only marginally, how truly encompassing the dark is and how little we know of its nature. We persist in our fear, standing before this dark precipice, wondering what demons plague that deep abyss. But I think it is not as wicked as our oldest nightmares, and likely as indifferent to our passing joys and sorrows as is the light.

Samiel is the personification of the night, the dark aspect of the universe that we are only beginning to learn to see with open eyes. Here, he emerges only for the briefest of moments, weaving his shadow through the light so we may see.

Finished this piece a while back for CelestialCall, of her cave dwelling dragon, Stardrake!  We had a lot of options for cave scenery, some of the world's most beautiful natural formations can be found in caves.  I wanted to have her encountering another cave creatures, something from a bygone era that has survived in the cool clear pools of this cave.  So I created this (fictional) prehistoric fish for Stardrake to happen upon, with his escort of smaller fish to clean his scales and eat the remnants of his meals.  Who knows how long this individual has survived in the blue waterways of this deep cave complex.  Certainly Stardrake might be the only creature qualified to delve into the cave depths to find him!

Finished illustration for SaWolf, of his Maned Wolf character Samael!  I am so happy I got to paint this scene, it's so peaceful and was so much fun to render.  Glowing sunset, sparkling sand, the sounds of the waves lapping the lonely beach, and not a soul (other than a curious lizard who wonders what Samael is reading) to interrupt a good book.  I found myself pining for the ocean while painting, and wishing I could be in a place as private and peaceful as this getaway.

Speedpaint commission for Kace, of her ADORABLE tiny robotic kitty character named Cee, designed by iFlops!  I'm getting better at painting quicker, but I am still having a hard time letting go of details for the sake of speed.  I can shave off a lot of time by leaving out final tiny refinements, but I still tend to want things to be more clean than a speedpaint warrants.  I'm pretty happy with this one though, it was so fun to paint this character!

A full portrait commission for Televassi, of their wolf warrior character!  These full portraits differ from icons in size and etail.  Icon paintings are very rough, with little refined detail so that they shrink well to be used as icons.  But portraits like these are much bigger, and have much more detail!

Commission of an anthro hedgehoggy giving the audience his best bedroom eyes.  I'd almost be sorry for the cheesy title, but it just works out so well!  I did a commission for for the same person two years ago ( shadow-wolf.deviantart.com/art… ), so comparing the way I handled this character then and now is kinda fun.  I went with a much different look for the spines, more clumped together and stylized to get the look from his character's ref sheet a bit better.

[Edit] Disabling comments on this one, sorry everyone.  I don't appreciate myself or my client being attacked because the character's design reminds folks of Sonic.  Comparing is fine, but I've gotten enough upset notes claiming character theft or some such that I'd rather just cut it off.

Finished commission for Victoria, from Thursday's on demand stream!  I got pretty carried away in a good way with this one, and part way through I realized why I liked the concept so much.  I did a drawing around 2003 to 2005 of a female canine character in a red skirt twirling, and I remember really liking the drawing at the time.  It's fun to revisit old concepts, even when it happens subconsciously.  Credit for the title for this one goes to Silana, thanks for the great title idea!

A friend is a friend, no matter if they are the same species as you or not.  Any strong friendship is worth defending fiercely!   The companionship between this fox and field mouse might seem unlikely, but I think he is showing where his loyalties lie.  Don't mess with the fox's friend, seriously.  Commission for Ralenfox done during my first-in-a-while on demand commission stream!  I will host more stream sessions like it in the future, where a person can pay to have their art done that day, live in my livestream channel.  Regular commissions at my usual rate are still available, but there is a pretty significant wait due to the length of my queue.

Finished full illustration for Sharlan! I've been looking forward to this piece for a while now, because I wanted the practice in painting vast amounts of foliage. I am striving to find that line between detail on everything, and implied detail. I LOVE painting detail, but it just as effective to paint implied detail on much of a painting. Because if everything is hyper detailed, it's distracting and busy, with no focus. I hope I somewhat pulled it off, though I need t practice it more.

I recommend listening to the song that inspired this piece - youtu.be/vouAtmE13vs

I went stupidly overtime on this because I wasn't able to sit down and just power through like I usually do. Commission for Kur0, who is collecting a series of really cool images from other artists with her character! In real life she is a zookeeper, so each image is of her character caring for a different kind if animal. Recently she was involved in the care of a baby bat named Noah, a story which captured my heart. I have a huge soft spot for bats, but getting to see the pictures of little Noah all swaddled and being fed was just cute overload for me! After the book project my foxy and me were working on went a little bit different than we planned and personal health problems from my side also came in between we decided to take the sketch of Raskyn ([link]) to be our book cover.

The book is all written in German, so if you are able to read and understand that language please feel free to order. The money will be donated to a foxrelated chairity organisation!
And don´t wait on an English version... I doupt there will be one.

Done with acrylics and a small brush. It was really much fun to do. ^.^

And the winner of the great hair color debate is....(drumroll, please) AUBURN! but you probably already figured that out from the picture! Auburn had twice as many votes as any other color. I appreciate everybody who chimed in with their two cents.

I've decided I'm going to do a companion piece. This is the warrior, so the other will be more of the mage. I see a similar, but kneeling pose, with a blond, white winged kitty facing the other direction with similar rocks but maybe climbing roses instead of wisteria. It's still in my head.
