To my sharp- though not as acute as his I daresay- recollection, Sherlock Holmes had never looked at me in the perplexed fashion with which he did on that day. In fact, I do not think he was fully aware of what confusion even felt like until then. I do not believe he had ever questioned his own powers of deduction, either.
