It shocked him that she could bear the chilliness of his palms and fingers. “Be a human with me,” he heard her say. “You don’t have to be scared of change. It’s much better than it seems. I promise that no matter what I’ll stay by your side. I won’t scare you. We’ll endure through everything together. Promise! True promise! We’ll be brave!”
He froze, this time from confoundment rather than from the ice that cabbaged him. He turned away to ponder for a moment.
