The Machine [Chapter 10]An unexpected jerk of my body woke me up. The window's sight changed from a calm night to a cloudily lit sky. Clouds were scaled in gray, climbing on top of one another. The city looked like it was in chaos because of the quickly darkening sky. My eyes narrowed and started to hurt. I shut them tightly to try to reduce the pain. As this action occurred, beads of liquid glass drenched the concrete paradise. Another jerk of pain flinched through my body, aching my nerves.More Like This
It was all so dream like, it was actually frightening. With every flinch, there would be a streak of lightning or a howl of thunder. The storm pressed on to leave me with no control. My body flinched and trembled so furiously, so uncontrollably.
The heart monitor started beeping frantically as my eyes widened. Shattered and a deep hazel, everything turned deaf. Nurses and doctors poured into my room, the doctors giving hurried commands. I couldn't hear any of their words; I could only see their mouths open like beached f
The Machine [Chapter 9]Silence once more became my untrustworthy friend as it showered the gloomy room. I dared not to open my eyes; the darkness shielded me from the sights I dared not to see. More uneasy silence came then the door's clicks to open and forceful slam. He had finally left me. It felt reassuring to have him leave, but I wasn't sure if Luke was still there.More Like This
A series of shouts of anger and of peace were heard through the closed and muffling door. As if there had been locks on my eyes, I gingerly opened them once more and looked around. The flickering TV screen dimed into a commercial that was soundless to me. I was the only soul in the room as I acknowledged Luke's disappointing absence.
The window had been opened, I supposed that this was Luke's doing. My eyes gazed outside with such longing. The desire to be normal and to have back the normal and simple life that I had once held was strong. It was a clear blue day outside. I wouldn't have guessed it from being shut up in this isolated room. Th
The Machine [Chapter 8]He glared at Luke, "What are you doing here? Get out." Those were the first words I heard him speak since our last phone conversation.More Like This
Luke looked surprised to be spoken to in such a manner, but he remained calm, "Sorry sir, but I am not allowed to leave. I have to be here to check her heart monitor now that she is awake. We have to keep her on a very close watch."
Luke's voice wasn't the same as it had been with me. Now, it was far sterner and much more professional. My eyes gazed up to him in a silent, "Thank you." with a timid smile; a very wrong move.
Mark was furious, he snapped angrily at me. "What the fuck! You just woke up and you're already looking at other guys! Am I not good enough for you?"
Luke's eyes widened I silently hoped that he couldn't interrupt Mark's sudden, yet expected, rage towards me. I kept quiet, knowing that it was probably my best option. However, it depended on how Mark would take my silence.
He noted my silence as ignoring, and it only fueled his unknown
The Machine [Chapter 7]His smile returned, "You're finally awake. That's great. We're all worried about you." He spoke, looking back down to my chart that was in his hands.More Like This
"We?" I said, clearly confused of what events had happened. "What happened? Why am I here? Who are you?" Questions rolled off of my tongue uncontrollably as I looked him in the eye.
His gaze shifted from the chart to the failure of a human that I was. He chuckled, "I figured that you wouldn't remember. You were hit pretty hard. You were in a car crash."
He paused then added, half to himself, "A pretty gruesome one at that."
I blinked then slowly closed my eyes as the memory started to flood my mind. White flashes of images of the accident caused me to shut my eyes tightly; the disturber sitting in his car, my frantic running, my uncontrollable mind. I hesitantly opened my eyes once more, in a dazed manner.
"All that? It all actually happened ? This isn't a dream " I heard my voice shake the stale air and I quickly closed my mout
The Machine [Chapter 6]It felt like years, no, like an eternity since I could open my rusted eyes. The dimly lit room gave me a headache as I noticed a light flicker. Like a bug to a zapper, it dimed then lit up, repeated and repeated. A haunting thought jerked my body, where am I? I sat up then stopped. The crinkle of the paper burst the unsure feeling of where I was. Why am I in another hospital? My eyes gazed around the white room. I leaned my back against the stiff and newly washed sheets that rested on the plastic bed.More Like This
The TV was on; it hung suspended in the air and silent. This was strange for me, I felt nothing at all. No feelings of fear, anger, franticness. As if my nerves had been cut out and I was nothing more than a blob of failed humanity, I felt absolutely nothing. I took a deep breath, my first in many that I knew were soon to follow. My eyes were fixed on the lit screen that was perched on the side of a pole.
The pole contained a bag that was filled with an unknown fluid. I shudder
The Machine [Chapter 5]I took a small step of the building once I had gathered enough courage. My breathing shook my nerves as the disturber glanced up from his smoke to meet my eyes. My legs felt tense and wild, the instinct to run flooding me. Without a second thought, I started to bolt away from him. My choice seemed to surprise the gray-haired man because I saw his eyebrows go up. With no voice but my instinct's to guide me, I ran towards my parked car. Old and a beaten up red, it stood out in the parking lot as I unlocked the door. Basically throwing myself in my only escape, the key hit the ignition and I was off. "What the fuck am I doing?" I muttered to my wild voice as my hands automatically turned the black steering wheel. The clock's numbers were a haze as I shook and sweated. I felt no control of myself; I didn't know what I was doing. Strangely for a hospital there were little to no cars, which made it easier for me to get out. My car swung itself on the turn and went out onto the path that woulMore Like This
The Machine [Chapter 4]My hand turned the knob in which, obviously, opened the door. No one was outside, not even Jen. With my suspicions raised, I took a weak step outward. Turning my head to look around, life seemed to go on normally in the hospital. Some stray nurses here and there stood and chatted quietly, tan folders in their arms. Thoughts swirled in my mind as I walked towards the door, did all of that really happen? Or am I just high on some medication? There was no time to figure this out; I needed to find the gray haired man. If he had known that something was wrong with me, there had to be answers. I stopped right before the door. My heartbeat increased and the pit in my stomach was greater now as I glanced outside. What if all of this is just a trick? Perhaps they're just trying to kidnap me? I'm human, aren't I? I was born into a family; I have a mother and a father I'm just a college girl trying to pass and be a writer. My life is so normal. Am I really all that different?More Like This
The Machine [Chapter 3]No longer bare and exposed, I finally was able to collect my thoughts and make a decision. My exhale was a signal for my mind to start doing some heavy thinking as I tied my hair back. The loose strands of brown hair swept in front of my face, their tips of blue were bright yet dull to my eyes. I felt like I was in some badly written movie, the whole world was against me. For now, I had to push aside the fact that I would want to write about this later and I started to pace. One foot in front of the other, I walked around the room. The feeling that I did not know who to trust was a very sad feeling for me. I've never been good with trust, my childhood events had taken that away from me. I shut my eyes, scolding myself for getting off track yet once again. My thoughts were, once again as fate would have it, disrupted by my phone's vibration. It's bright and illuminated screen made my eyes flicker towards it as it lay on the table. The noise it made usually had surprised me, but now I haMore Like This
