You kicked back against the man dragging you through the building, but nothing worked. All you had managed to do was stall the inevitable. Sweat drenched your head and stuck your hair to your face and neck. If only he would let you go. Now!
You screamed and kicked again, and the man holding you growled and pulled tighter against your arms and abdomen. “Stop,” he demanded.
You didn't listen, and why should you? He dragged you through another door and held firm. Unfortunately, he wouldn't take any chances on releasing you.
“Barton,” someone hissed, and you heard the sound of boots against the hard floor. The voice was closer the second time. “What is this?”
Someone plucked at your sleeve. You shrieked and kicked your heels against the floor, trying to back away. Unfortunately, this Barton person still held you firmly. He didn't let up.
“I found her snooping around outside,” Barton supplied the explanation. “Sh

Boaz watched the others remove their masks, but he couldn't. He couldn't let you see him. Couldn't let you think for one second that he had had anything to do with your abduction.
“Thank you,” the man in the blue suit dismissed him with that single, simple phrase.
Boaz stood still. His head warred with his heart. He had asked you not to join the Dauntless faction. Had feared that they would fear your ability to think faster and differently than everyone else. He had been right, but keeping you out of Dauntless hadn't stopped them from discovering you.
He had never met anyone who thought outside of the box. Conformers, he liked to call everyone else. Weak and willing to spend their entire lives thinking inside their confines.
You had shown him possibilities beyond his imagination.
The man in the blue suit cleared his throat. “Boaz,” he said sternly,

Since he couldn't shake you out of it and you wouldn't listen when he spoke, Loki decided there was only one thing left to try. He closed his eyes and made sure he had his feet firmly planted.
On the outside of your head, the real Loki smiled mischievously and blinked. Inside your head and out, he knew what he had to do. He kept the spear to your chest, aware of the Aether inside you as well as what he was about to do. He leaned closer. Hesitated. Smiled again.
And Loki pressed his lips to yours.

A very paranoid Nissa was curled on the couch when Lel returned hours later. Everything was wrong. The sky practically vibrated with premonitions.
The two other women from Nissa's first day in the palace followed Lel inside. Something long and green stretched between them.
The bejeweled box Lel carried clicked as she set it carefully on the table.
“What is this?” Nissa pulled herself forward and set her feet on the stone floor.
The two women laid the delicate, jade green fabric flat on the sofa, and Nissa recognized it for what it was. The most beautiful gown she had ever laid eyes on. She ran a hand along the skirt, and found that the fabric was softer than a cloud.
Lel clapped her hands in eager anticipation. “Come, let us see how it fits.”
Nissa withdrew her hand quickly. “What's it for?”
“There is to be merriment this evening. Prince Lorcan requires your attendance.” She motioned to the dress. “It is only proper.

Thor had been a good ally, in the end. He had known what the man would do, if pushed hard enough. So many underestimated the power of a good push.
He paced uncertainly, back and forth from the door to the bed. You were back, he had succeeded in that, but he knew you were ill. And he knew the cause of it all. He knew what he had to do, he just didn't want to do it.
Loki grasped his spear and settled the tip gently against your collarbone. He was pleasantly surprised when nothing soared to hold him back. Many things were wrong. He took a deep breath.
And stepped into your head.
He smiled at the landscape you had created for yourself. Everyone created a mind palace without realizing it. Their favorite places. Thei

Loki straightened his scarf and tucked his new cane under his arm. He knocked twice on the townhouse door.
Joe opened it, tousled hair and all, and Loki grinned. The easy way would get him information faster, but this way would be far more pleasurable.
“What are you doing here?” Joe wanted to know.
Loki put the tip of his cane in the rat's stomach and pushed him away from the door. “Entering.”
The new safe house wasn't really a house at all, and you figured out pretty quickly why the good Captain hadn't been with you at the Tower. Stuffing Thor into the elevator with the rest of the gang had been entertaining.

You opened one eye to stare up at him. He didn't look mad, but he didn't look happy either. Fine. You would do it. But only because you weren't tired anyway. You stifled a long yawn.
“And by up, I mean out of the bed.” He yanked at the blanket, and you balled your fists tighter to keep him from exposing you to the cold bunker air conditioning.
You swatted at his hand. “I'm up. Go 'way.”
“You think I trust you to actually get out of that bed?”

Thor was still pacing near the door, which was where Captain Rogers had posted him. When he had protested too much, Barton had explained that he was the most capable Avenger to keep a solid eye on you and that if you freaked out again, he was the only one who knew how to calm you down. The same foreboding that had taunted her years ago with E.J. now threatened to choke her. It was so strong. So clear. She tried once more to stand, and clutched her abdomen with a cry of pain as dread ripped through every inch of her body.

“Find father,” Lorcan demanded.
His tone must have said something more than his words, for Octavian turned and disappeared through a doorway. Fiann wrapped a hand around Lorcan's bicep.
Lorcan paused, but didn't turn.
“What happened?” she asked quietly. Calmly. Too calmly, as if she knew.
“The Drasilian.” Lorcan spat the words, because he couldn't think of anything else to say.
Fiann dropped her skirts and pressed her hands against her mouth, also effectively releasing Lorcan's arm from her surprisingly strong grasp. “Oh, Lorcan, I am so very sorry.”

She had never told anyone what The Knowing said to her before. She had been too scared. She was a freak, and she didn't want to make that well known. She hadn't even told E.J. what it said. She had wanted to, sometimes, but the fear kept her from doing it.

The understanding came as quickly as the appendage did, and I turned and found another arm sticking out of my other side. This, too, suddenly gained feeling, and I found I was able to move both at once with ease. A small joyful sound rang out, and I realized that I had made it.
