Just Looking [Modern!AU | Hanji Zoe x Reader]You had just graduated high school and was in serious need of a job to save up money for college. Lucky for you, your aunt owned a book store that had an opening for stacking books. You were a bit clumsy, but it was the only job available. After working there for a couple of months, you noticed a certain regular in the science section. She often asked you for help finding books on many things ranging from anatomy to botany to hydrology.More Like This
She seemed like a nice person, a little crazy, but nice. She would sometimes start some small talk about science. You had no idea what she was saying most of the time, but you listened anyway. It would be rude to ignore her just because you didn't understand her, right?
She had burnt umber hair that was pulled into a messy ponytail, sienna eyes hidden behind glasses, and smooth, tan skin. She said her name was Hanji. To be honest, you couldn't stop thinking about her. You could remember every single one of her features. You really didn't understand why.

A warm gust of air hit you as you opened the heavy oak door to the tavern. It was a simple establishment, and quite empty for that time of night. A few men sat at the bar, and a few others were scattered around the room in various places.
Your eyes and your body was drawn towards the crackling fire, which you could feel warm your bare feet. You were careful not to peel off your cloak and expose your fancy dress to prying eyes. Instead you pulled your hood farther over your face and sat as close to the fire as possible.
Flames licked at the wood placed in the hearth slowly, occasionally giving a crackle of life. You held your hands out, watching as droplets of water ran down the backs of your hands and evaporated.
The warmth of the fire heated your skin and rested within your chest. You sat back after a few minutes, resting on your hands and allowed yourself a small sigh of contentment. You closed your eyes, feeling the heat of the fire soak through

We never get to say proper goodbyes in this world. Death lies beyond those walls; those very walls that hold comfort to some, yet suppress freedom. We fight for a cause-- for mankind. But for every death, a part of us leaves.
It never returns-- it can never be found.
But you don’t ever think of such things while in battle-- morale would lower severely, death embraced as you cut into the nape of their necks.
Everyone knows they could die out there.
But no one ever ponders their goodbyes as they fight. Everyone is determined to return home.
Casualties are normal-- however, the pain still remains, never dulling, regardless of how many soldiers die.
The sight of the fallen comrades allows you a vulnerable moment-- only then do you contemplate what your last words
SS .:How It Should Have Been:.Zelgadis couldn't quite think as to why, but he thought that Amelia was somewhat different around him.More Like This
Not just around him, actually. He needed to be more specific. When it was just the two of them. Since Lina, Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis had become something of a team Amelia had certainly calmed her demeanor somewhat and only really showed her questionable sides when faced with outrageous infractions of justice.
So what was different when it was just he and her? They'd taken to traveling separate from the other two at times, whether he'd be needed to accompany her on some mission or other in the midst of a short visit to Seyruune or she got bored of palace life (or in trouble with her father). He couldn't say he minded the company once in a while, and she (mostly) respected his privacy and comfort zones, such as leaving him alone when he was poring over a map or, say, brooding.
Amelia just had this sort of maturity about her. Not all the times, of course, but sometimes there would be

"Just this once!"
"I promise I'll be gentle!"
"It's not me that I'm worried about…"
"I'll tell you if you're being too rough!"
"By then it might be too late."
"We don't have to tell anyone!"
"I don't care."
"Somewhere secret where no one can see us?"
"You're missing the point here..."
"We can use protection?"
"Amelia, do I look like I need protection?"
""We can do it reaaal quick?"
"Look, why don't you just ask Lina or Gourry?"
"But they're already doing it right now… with each other…"
Zelgadis sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose in irritation, "Why are you so hell-bent on this, Amelia?"
"Because in order to stay healthy and fit we must train our bodies and not just our magic. Sparring is the perfect way to do that! It also promotes teamwork by allowing us to get a feel for each other's strengths and weaknesses so we can help each other out in battle. We'll also be prepared if for some reason our magic isn't working and it
