I was walking out of school one day, alone as usual. People whirled around me, some rushing to get to the book fair, others racing away from teachers waving detention slips like flags of war. I nearly fell as a boy dashed by me, his shoulder hitting my backpack as he ran and throwing me off balance.
Scowling at his retreating back, I shifted my bag on my shoulders and looked around the hallway, leaning against my locker. Running a hand through my hair, I sighed.
