I saw this on the intrawebs over the weekend from Pax East and thought it was safe to load up.

This one was hands down the most fun to work on.

Cute Girl? Check
Fog? Check
Lots of fucking fire blasting you in the mug? Check

I hope you guys enjoy it and that my work keeps you coming back to the gallery, I appreciate all the great feedback so much.
All the best,
Brad

Completed this illustration for Magic: The Gathering last October and it's just been released in the new green Commander set.
The original brief was more complicated than this scene so the art director allowed me to change it to this. Definitely had some learning experiences during this one :D

For the Avacyn Restored set from Magic: The Gathering.

Card Text: Choose an order for artifacts, creatures, and lands. Each player sacrifices one permanent of the first type, sacrifices two of the second type, then sacrifices three of the third type.
Flavor Text: Skirsdag cultists refused to quietly accept Avacyn's ascendancy.

At long last I can show an illustration I've done for Magic: The Gathering CCG. Having completed it last September I couldn't release it till the company made it public which they recently did by showing it on small advertisement for the New Phyrexia set. Apparently they're having a Game Day June 11-12 and my card will be free if you go. That's pretty cool.
I'm currently working on my 13 and 14th cards but this was one of the two firsts that I did and also the only full card illustration.
The brief was that she's a priest that's been taken over by the Phyrexia and now lives to cast blessings over the furnace fires.
Looking at it now there's a lot I would differently but it's still a solid piece and I'm happy with it for the time I was at.

This was part of a full mage cycle series I did for Wizards. It was really fun to do! It was my first time doing basically full on character design rather than just illustration for them. I tried to really boil down the style and feel of the different elemental types. I also had to do them all in a pretty tight time constraint, it was a challenge!

One of the spoiler cards on display at PAX East for Magic the Gathering's "Commander" format, set to be released this summer.
You can find out more about the format and see the other cool cards here at the official site:

This was REALLY exciting to find out about, I had no idea that the card was going to be blown up and used as a spoiler - Good times!

- Usually I don't design the characters/creatures/items in the cards, im asked to re-imagine them based on Art Direction notes and rough concept art provided by the Magic the Gathering concept artists.
In this case I was given extremely loose notes " ..a female vedalken wizard". So in essence I designed Nin, The Pain Artist. Believe it or not I prefer to re-imagine and illustrate the concept based on rough ideas and notes, but I had good fun with designing on this one, hopefully i'll have the the opportunity to revisit her in another card in the future.

Many, many thanks for all the great comments and interest, it's the best part of the whole thing!

I'm so glad I got the opportunity to illustrate these planeswalkers, especially for a duel deck. It was a fun challenge fitting what is essentially two separate illustrations into one composition and having it still feel organic - the characters had to work both together AND separately, and it took some trial and error to get them there.

My second illustration for yet released MTG: Commander set. It was a rush card assigned in the last minute but I think the result looks nice even a few month later.

This was for a promo reprint of "Primordial Hydra". Since its a promo, I'm pretty sure the only way to get the card with this image is to purchase Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 on xbox. Otherwise it will have the artwork by Aleksi Briclot (which is awesome).

Some people have said that the eyeless falcor look is off putting, so I just want to say up front that this was intentional. Who hasn't watched the Never Ending Story and wished that Falcor was several stories tall, had hundreds of heads, navigated by sound/smell alone and compelled chiefly by an insatiable blood lust?

Since Fate Reforged takes place in Khans of Tarkir's past, I like to think this monk is a distant ancestor to the monk in Singing Bell Strike, Singing Bell Strike being what Pressure Point has evolved into after being passed down through the generations.

I really like the design of Ojutai and love the concept of an enlightened, monk-like dragon.  Very happy that I got to do both iterations of him.

I can't say for sure how many hours I spent repainting, adjusting, nudging/warping those wings but it was definitely a whole lot.  Still not sure if they work 100%

So stoked that I got to do one of the legendary dragons.

I think it's cool how when birds bank their bodies can become almost perpendicular with the ground while their heads remain stable and oriented upright, locked on to whatever it is they're looking at.  I tried to replicate that here.

all 10 guildmages based off their cards from original Ravnica. I'm planning on doing some RTR centric comics soon, so I decided that I should probably nail down what they all look like; for your convenience, here are the cards I used as reference images

Azorius
Rakdos
Izzet
Boros
Golgari
Gruul
Dimir
Selesnya
Orzhov
Simic - the guildmage didn't give me much to go on, so he's more of an amalgamation of simic guildmage & simic initiate.

enjoy

Card art for the Innistrad set of Magic: The Gathering. The trickiest issue with this piece was that the magic was to be dark purple. Usually magic is portrayed as bright and glowing which makes it show up well but dark magic requires a light background to show up so it took some balancing before the value scheme worked. The character designs were wide open so it was fun creating them.
