Hi guys! This is a new set of 12 artworks I did for the new Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion. Although the dateline for this book was a lot tighter it nevertheless was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

As with the last book I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the Reader's Companion. Enjoy!

This is the final showdown scene, found in The Unifying Force, between Jedi Grand Master Skywalker, the Solo twins and the Supreme Overlord of the Yuuzhan Vong, Shimrra along with his retinue of Slayer bodyguards. Skywalker's strike team is part of a larger campaign Galactic Alliance is fighting in an attempt to retake Coruscant and end the Yuuzhan Vong threat once and for all.

I read the excerpt for this scene and it just thrills me to see how powerful and badass Luke is as a Jedi Master. I would absolutely love to see this as a movie but alas I can only dream

This scene is from The Courtship Of Princess Leia and it is the first proper depiction of Teneniel Djo, witch of Dathomir and future Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium. Luke Skywalker, who was checking out the wreckage of the Chu'unthor, is caught off guard by her sudden appearance and barely dodges a kick to the face. This is totally an unfair match-up but Miss Djo has no clue who she's dealing with.

For those who don't know there is actually an existing depiction of Teneniel Djo but it is a black and white sketch done back in the 90s. The publisher felt it was not reflective of how she's described in the books and so we gave her a little update and sexed her up just a wee bit so this result of it.

This was another piece that was done purely for the fans. It's from Force Heretic of the New Jedi Order series and it shows the Jedi Expedition led by Grand Master Luke Skywalker exchanging cordial gestures with former enemy and renown Imperial ace pilot, Baron Soontir Fel. He's one of my favorite EU characters mostly because he's an upstanding Imp and the Empire's equivalent of Alliance ace, Wedge Antilles, whom I love.

Fel here is part of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force but was also formerly a commanding officer in Thrawn's Empire of the Hand before its dissolution....or absorption by the Chiss Ascendancy. The Jedis are on the Chiss homeworld of Csilla and they are on an expedition in search of the mysterious sentient planet, Zonama Sekot, which they believe is the key to defeating the Yuuzhan Vong.

That's one way to end a squabble. This scene, from the book, Darksaber, is when Admiral Daala puts an end to the petty infighting amongst the Imperial Warlords after trying, unsuccessfully, to convince them to work together.

I had alot fun with this piece as it was chance to properly depict Warlords Teradoc, Harrsk and Delvardus. I've had a few people from Del Rey Publishing telling me that this its one of their favorite pieces from the Readers Companion and its one of mine too. :)

Here's a rare fan art piece I did of Mrs Skywalker. She's one of the coolest female leads in the Star Wars mythos but its too bad she died in the novels.

Notice she's using Luke's original lightsaber, the one he lost when he fought Vader, which he than retrieved later on and gave it to Mara.

Hope you guys like it.

I'm not the first to think up the idea of mashing Star Wars and Aliens together - but the two go together so well I had to draw another crossover. (My other piece features Darth Maul.)

For this one - I thought up the idea of Darth Vader going to check out some unusual liferform readings in his Star Destroyer's cargo hold... and finding an Alien queen.

The title for this has a double meaning. First because I think the two characters would be fairly evenly matched in a fight. Second - because of the parallels between the character design - both are shiny black evil monsters. So I've emphasised this in the composition and lighting. I also picked up on a few helpful comments about the 'gritty' feel of my last piece - so I kept a limited colour palette for this one too.

I've drawn Darth Vader attempting to use his 'force choke' on the Alien queen (would that work?). I did this intentionally because it's an ambiguous pose. I wanted him to look like he might even be reaching out to the Alien - perhaps sensing a kindred spirit. I thought that added something to this as a piece of 'art' that would be lost if this was just another battle scene.

This is an original depiction of George Lucas's and HR Giger's characters. My initial sketch for this was drawn on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 using the bundled Photoshop Touch. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the digitizer pen is - and the fact that you can export PSD files to complete your work is great too. I finished the piece in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. I used Google Sketchup to build a 3D wireframe for the background which I then imported to Photoshop to colour.

I'm really, really pleased with this. Hope you like it too!

I have another one for you Mara fan's. This one is from the first book of the New Jedi Order series called Vector Prime and it shows Mara Jade dueling Yomin Carr. She's the first Jedi to ever encounter, duel and defeat a Yuuzhan Vong in single combat, albeit with great difficulty. This was an enemy unlike any other the Jedi has faced before and one that is formidable even to an experienced Jedi like Jade Skywalker. On top of looking like a pure badass the one thing that makes Yuuzhan Vong cool to me is their use of living bio-weapons like thud bugs (thrown projectiles) and the amazing amphistaff, which is a whip, sword, spear, and venom shooter all rolled into one and its apparently so tough that it can resist a lightsaber cut.

I think some of you may have already seen this image already as it was one of the preview images from the Reader's Companion but I'd like to mention that this is the updated version of the one floating around the net right now. I made some changes after some sharp-eyed fans pointed out that her lightsaber was the wrong kind and so I gave her Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber, which is more consistent with canon. I also noticed that Wookieepedia has the old version of this image. If anyone would be kind enough to update it with this version that would be great!

Kyle Katarn and Jerec duke it out at the Valley of the Jedi in Ruusan. This scene is from one of my favorite Star Wars game franchises, Dark Forces. Though I have to admit that Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight is the only one in the series I've not actually played through. Nevertheless I do find it baffling that Kyle was able to defeat Jerec even after he was imbued with the power of many Jedis. I know gameplay factor had alot to do with this but perhaps there's a canon explanation of how Kyle Katarn overcame the supposedly "invincible" Sith that I'm not aware of.

An Entechment in process from the Truce At Bakura novel. The space raptors are called Ssi-ruuk and there are the ones torturing and sucking the life out of that the poor Imp officer using a contraption called an Entechment rig. The "life-energy" extracted is used as a power the Ssi-ruuk war-machine. The other human in the scene is Dev Sibwarra, using the force to calm the victim down. One of the few creepy scenes in the Star Wars universe IMO.

This scene is found in a short story by Timothy Zahn called Mist Encounter and its one of my favorite fan pieces. Here Captain Voss Parck of the Victory Class Star Destroyer, Strikefast, and Colonel Barris meets Mitth'raw'nuruodo (Thrawn) for the first time. Following this event Thrawn joins the Empire and eventually becomes the Grand Admiral we all know and love, and also founder of the Empire of the Hand.

If you look closer you'll also notice that the clone troopers are wearing hybrid, transitional armor, a combination of phase II and the new stormtrooper armor.

I worked on and off on this one for a while, then finally did most of it over the past couple days. I suppose there is more ways to improve it, but I am tired of working on it and kind of like it now anyways.

This is my SWTOR mercenary Kaz'bazi on the Ebon Hawk server, hanging out on his ship, probably just getting dressed for the day. Mmm.. male twi'leks...

Painter 7, Photoshop CS2 and a wacom graphire. Yay! ...or something. I don't own Star Wars, SWTOR, or Twi'leks.

Here is another painting I did for the Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion.

-------------
This was a very fun job... But quite a challenge as well. I had 2 months to do 39 illustrations for this book.

While speed is a strength that normally lands me a lot of my work, I still want to do as best as I can. It can become quite a challenge. I pushed VERY hard on this assignment to do my absolute best-- even having to work it around my regular freelance work. But I pulled it off... And I am happy with the way it came out.

I don't want to disappoint you all with no jackass commentary on this piece. At the same time, this guy can strangle someone who displeases him from across galaxies. Now, I know he's just a floating spirit or whatever, and he's all redeemed and nice and junk. But I don't want to push my luck.

Vader may very well be my first icon of awesome. My parents tell me that Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw. And "forever did it dominate my destiny."

For Star Wars Galaxies. Copyright Lucas Arts and Sony Online Entertainment. Art directed by Roger Chamberlain and Derek Herring.

Chestplate by Hebrew washing machine scrapyard. I'm not even kidding. The first Vader costume was seriously cobbled together from junk, including a washing machine coin slot. The Hebrew words were the inspiration for "Sith Script" which was used for the following costumes. And the words became a prophecy, instead of, I guess "Linens and Delicates."

I don't often get to do artwork for publication, but this was certainly a major highlight - the cover for Game Informer Magazine :)

This art was generated in October 2007, using various assets created by myself and Character Art Lead Ken Bishop. Ken made the hero suit from my design, the gun, and the background soldiers from his own concepts. I made the mechs, the terrain, and the environment. If you look closely, the strange alien structures are visible in the distance, although there's a lot of atmosphere hiding them :)

Once a concept sketch was approved for the final composition, Animation Lead Robert Coddington then posed the figures. The meshes were "frozen" in position and placed in the 3D environment, and I rendered out all the various passes and alpha masks I would need.

The scene was assembled with all the elements posed together, but each element was rendered in separate passes for maximum control over the final image.

The ground was a heavily subdivided mesh deformed with a displacement texture.

It was quite a coup for our project to land a cover story with GI! I doubt anyone imagined that "Tiberium" would be canceled a year later - not in their wildest dreams :(...

The whole scene was rendered in Lightwave, and then a lot of fine tuning was done in Photoshop.

I had modeled the helmet as part of the overall design process for the character and his armor, which had transpired 6 months previously. The helmet was designed to articulate open and closed, although that's not apparent in a still image.

All the assets shown here were made for a pre-rendered announcement trailer with CG animation done at Eden FX in Hollywood, produced during the summer months of 2007.

Since I've always harbored aspirations to do book covers, this illustration was quite a welcome challenge, not to mention it being a real honor to illustrate for a nationally distributed publication :D

Hi all! It's been so long since I've been able to post work that I've done!

These concept artworks were done in late 2008 for the game Front Mission Evolved. Front Mission is a cult-classic mecha franchise by Square Enix that inspired my love for robots when I was a youngster. It was an insane privilege for IFS and myself to have been able to contribute to it.

_____________________________________________

[EDITED: higher res file + sharpened image]

Image info:

Night fighting at the docks. A massive invasion by a terrorist group is underway as law enforcement (the brown Wanzers in the foreground) desperately attempt to pin down the assaulting force. This image is fully painted IIRC with the aid of a stock photo or 2 for the background lights. I always wanted to make a mech do a blind-fire maneuver. I thought it might help to convey a more realistic kind of fear and desperation given the odds-- and at the same time, show off whatever is happening in the background a bit better.
