I feel a little pang of cognitive dissonance every time I favourite a self portrait by a female artist or include the work of a female artist in a feature. The reason for this is because I am conscious of my own bias towards the female subject conflicting with my unrealised desire to have a gender balance in my favourites and features. My desire to reduce the dissonance, and this may appear to be classic justification behaviour, is hampered by a lack in quantity and quality of male self portraits.
So I suppose, the real issue isn't my slight cognitive dissonance every time I click the like button, but why there is such a disparity between men and women in the making of art with the self as subject. It is a
