Inspiration is, for me, a funny thing. I get inspired more by an emotion or feeling than an actual thought or expression; a lot of my work is created from facts and concepts, but the seed of it always stems from an emotion.
I have a collection of favourites of work which I've found on deviantART which inspires me because their visual evokes a feeling which sparks inspiration in me and drives me to create. You can browse the collection, but I'm going to share some of my favourite selections from it with you now. Hopefully you'll find something which inspires you within.

Syn's Dithering TutorialWhat is dithering?More Like This
Dithering is a pixel art process used to blend blocks of colour together or help apply a texture to a pixelled surface. Within emoticons it is most commonly used when making pixelled backgrounds, however it can be used in a number of other areas, e.g. massive emote bases, pixel objects etc. In this tutorial, we will focus on how 2 colours can be blended with dithering.
To break dithering down into simple terms, it is achieved by simply taking the colours from the two blocks of colour and placing individual pixels of each on the opposite side. This creates a region where the two colours merge together to create a more blended colour transition instead of a clear line between the two.
Dithering can seem like a complex process, but it's really not. Once you get the basic idea and technique, it's just all about practice and over time you'll learn how to apply it to a number of different situations. There are many dithering styles which can be

Photo editing is fun. It gives you a chance to add something to your photos, and really bring out expressions you may or may have not realised were there. Lately, I've been obsessed with retro and vintage editing effects in my editing, to try and replicate film photographs. Of course, it's impossible to replicate actual film photos, but I think that's what makes it fun: you can do anything you want and it doesn't matter if it looks realistic or not. It's about artistic freedom, and enjoying yourself! I've found myself in a vast world of endless possibilities and I can't wait to continue and try new things. What is the difference between an embedded deviation and a deviant thumb? Glad you asked. The thumbs have the codes everyone already knows and loves. Street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called it the “decisive moment”— the captured instant when all the photograph’s elements come together to tell a story in a way a text narrative of thousands of words could never begin to. It is what hooks people, both practitioners and advocate-devotees, on the art form. It is uniquely completely immersive in life— step out into the streets— in which the moment of artistic epiphany can never be guessed at until it suddenly happens. When it is properly mastered, it is as pure as the dawn of each new day, as true as the living organism of a teeming street scene catching a breath as one.

Nudes-A-PlentySome on this site don't seem to understand why there are so many nudes on this site. It's easy to dismiss this wonder as mostly GWCs ("Guys with Camera") or Fauxtographers using their gear to take advantage of naive young women, proliferating the Internet with horrible snapshots. Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian t

Know your Basics - Composition (the manip way)The Rule of Thirds is another one of those expressions that you have probably heard before somewhere but aren't quite sure what it means. This article strives to shed some light on this rule as well as on how to use lines and shapes in your compositions to lead the viewer's eye to the important bits. There are some compositional rules and pointers that no artist should go without knowing!More Like This

Rule of Thirds
Thankfully this time, there are no hours upon hours of dry reading to be done because the Rule of Thirds itself can be explained rather easily:
"The Rule of Thirds states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections." (from the wikipedia article)

Photomanipulation walkthroughStep 1: Idea (message, composition)More Like This
You decided that you want to make a photomanipulation. But what to make? There are so many photomanipulations already out there and mostly with the same theme. So you decide you don't just want to stick a pretty girl onto a beautiful background. No you want to be original and have your manipulation portray a message everyone can relate to.
Think of things that are important to you, that lay close to your heart. They can be emotions (love, hate, sadness, anger) or experiences, hobbies (art, sports etc), things you are struggling with. Or they can be global themes like (beauty, money, economy, eating disorders, war, relationships etc.)
Of course if you choose to portray something as love there are many ways to do so. Do you want it to be a surreal depiction of love, or dark, fantasy, sci-fi, conceptual, humourous... your choice will of course decide the whole 'feel' of the image.
So choose wisely as they say.
Now that you have your theme you nee
The Pin-Up ProblemWhen it comes to art, I'm of the notion that skill and technique take precedence over subject matter. If you can draw a bowl and practically replicate it like a damn photograph, you've got my respect, as opposed to say drawing disturbing pin-ups of ponies. To that end, regardless of what I'm drawing I try my hardest to present something with style and a professional approach to detail.More Like This
However this does nothing to dispel the stigma behind my Pin-Up work, but in all honestly it's not unjustified. For if one could go low brow in terms of art and rake in viewers by the hundreds, all one has to do is draw tits and asses. You don't have to be exceptionally skilled in anatomy, all you have to do is draw the T and the A absurdly huge, so you can hide all the areas you're not very good at drawing behind other pieces of flesh.
This is not me saying that drawing Pin-Ups is wrong in my eyes, more of the fact that FANS of Pin-up work make it all too easy. My old art teacher never submitted his wor
PE - Welcome to Digital Dolls!Hey everyone! Welcome to Dolling week of Project Educate! I suppose I'll start it out with what the heck I'm even talking about.More Like This
Digital dolls! A term coined by DeviantArt, but a very fitting term indeed! Dolls are basically small pixel-art (usually of people) typically created from a base-body (a naked, bald pixel-person) that another doller has made.
That was a mouth-full, huh? Just think of them as digital paper-dolls.![]()
![]()
So what's this about a base-body? Bases are actually a huge part of the dolling experience. If you notice, in the three example dolls up there, the artist credits another artist for the 'base'. Almost every doll is like a collaboration between two artists, making dolling that much more fun! Some people choose to edit the base they use til it's barely recognizable, and some people prefer to leave them as they were!![]()

Tutorial Showcase #11DeviantART is a great place to find not only art but also some awesome tutorials. It doesn't matter if you are interested in photo manipulation or writing, usually there is a tutorial for that. But at the same time there are so many great tutorials outside of deviantART and most deviantART users might never find them unless someone shows these tutorials to them. So I'm happy to introduce you a new journal series called "Tutorial Showcase" which features some awesome tutorials outside of deviantART. System is pretty simple. Every showcase journal showcases five tutorials from a specific category and this category changes with every new journal. There's no special placement, all of them are equal. PE: Walkthroughs, an alternative way to learnMore Like This
Walkthroughs, alongside tutorials, are always an excellent way to learn. It's really helpful to get educated through a tutorial which tells exactly what to do in a detailed way step by step. However at times what is even more helpful is to actually see the artist in action, there are things you need to see get done by yourself and here is where walkthroughs come into play.
There's always something fascinating about seeing the different stages of the creation process of a piece, and you can always learn from the artists and adapt part of said process to your own.
Besides showing part of this process through images which show the different stages of a piece, and

Since there are so many sub-galleries of Photography here on deviantART, we're not going to be able to cover every single one this week. Upgrading to jQuery 1.9One of the most time consuming tasks involved with running a large website can be upgrading libraries. Of course we do this all the time, but sometimes those libraries are used across the entire site. One of those libraries that we use at deviantART is jQuery. Unfortunately, we got a little bit behind with keeping jQuery up to date and we were still on version 1.7. But over the last couple of months, #dt has upgraded the whole deviantART network to jQuery 1.9. As you may already know, this upgrade can be slightly challenging due to the number of changes that break backwards compatibility.More Like This
The first thing that everyone attempting to upgrade from an earlier version should use is the new jQuery.migrate plugin. This plugin is bundled with jQuery 1.9 and will generate console warnings when deprecated features are used. Without a doubt, this is the most helpful tool available for finding parts of your site

Louder Than dA Bomb POETRY SLAM + Comment Below! If you cannot participate for the awesome prize pool, see the bottom of this journal for a possible reward.More Like This
A few days ago #Elocutionists received a huge helping of prize donations for an unnamed contest the likes and scale of which have never been seen on deviantART before. What is it, you ask?
It's a slam. A poetry slam. And it's Louder Than dA Bomb.
A poetry slam is a "no holds barred" spoken word competition. Poets are encouraged to alliterate, rhyme, shout, whisper, zing, compliment, parody, satirize, improvise, recite, quote, play with words and even sing if the opportunity arises.
For the longest time the #Elocutionists team have wanted to hear the roaring voice of literature, and this month we don't want to hear just any spoken word for a chance at prizes— NO! We want to listen to a writer's passion, emotion, and drive to keep being who they are; their inspiration to keep writing as they will and we want to hear you que

Just because you shot it in the street...JUST BECAUSE YOU SHOT IT IN THE STREET IT DOESN'T MAKE IT "STREET PHOTOGRAPHY"More Like This
Street Photography is a largely misunderstood and misinterpreted photography genre http://myraincheck.deviantart.com/art/Statistics-on-Street-Photography-371453155 .
So, let's try to kill the most common misunderstandings:
Street photography is not photography of (empty) streets and it is not necessarily a photo taken in a street.
Street photography most definitely is not photography of your All Stars shoes in the street, it is not photography of your cat, or of graffiti or 'street art' (that's another genre of photography), it is not photography of your friends or family on trip.
Let's see some attempts to define street photography:
"The essence of street photography is the impulse to take candid pictures in the stream of everyday life" (from 'Street photography Now').
" For the most part, however, the photographers discussed in these pages have tried to work without being noti
