Another day and night passed on the Silver Highway, with no further sign of the Blackstonian invaders and their big, armored Charrs. Haergrim the ranger walked nearly wordlessly, despite all of Pana's efforts to engage him in conversation about the invaders, about Lord Heizmall, about anything at all. Haergrim was an elf of few words. He wasn't unfriendly toward the human girl, but just kept his cards close to his chest.
So Pana spent the time looking around to make sure they weren't followed, for any sign of danger, but found none. She also marveled at the beauty of the land. White birch and poplar trees lined this stretch of the Silver Highway, many birds sang their songs and criss-crossed overhead, and one evening she even saw a deer with tremendous antlers.

Pana's mouth opened in amazement. They were in a natural cavern barely six feet high, with tiny stalactites and stalagmites, and patches of glowing moss on the walls and ceiling providing faint illumination. The cavern slanted downwards at a gentle slope, and water trickled down the walls. A groove had been cut along both sides of the floor, and the water flowed into it and down into the blackness. The slightly raised center of the floor was dry, providing good traction.
"I call it my home away from home," echoed Chawinda's voice from the darkness ahead.
Pana could barely make out Haergrim's hunched form walking in front of her. After about fifty feet, the luminescent moss ended, and only pitch blackness remained. She could hear the rushing of water somewhere ahead, but it echoed and it was impossible to tell which way the body of water was. She squinted, but realized Haergrim was no longer ahead of her. Suddenly her toes we
