Kristy watched the dying embers of the fire from the side of the river bed. The car had fallen through the wooden beams as they burned. Now smouldering remains of bridge, car, and body were merging in the muddy water and flowing gently away. She looked up. There was a clear line that divided the sky where her power's grip lost hold. It ran parallel in the sky to the river. Somewhere beyond, the police were waiting. They'd come as far as the bridge, only to find it burnt. She had caught a glimpse of their flashing lights and the whirling sirens as they turned to find a new way across. That was the only bridge, but she knew they would find the new path eventually. Now it was just a matter of time.
She turned away from the last of the flames and climbed back up the bank. Her heels sank in the mud, only for the ground to spit them back out again, as if rejecting her. She hauled herself up onto the grass beside the road, and came face-to-fac
