The New Street Photographer's ManifestoFebruary 7, 2013/by $techgnoticMore Like This
Street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called it the “decisive moment”— the captured instant when all the photograph’s elements come together to tell a story in a way a text narrative of thousands of words could never begin to. It is what hooks people, both practitioners and advocate-devotees, on the art form. It is uniquely completely immersive in life— step out into the streets— in which the moment of artistic epiphany can never be guessed at until it suddenly happens. When it is properly mastered, it is as pure as the dawn of each new day, as true as the living organism of a teeming street scene catching a breath as one.
It's no easy task to pull a book together for publication and "The New Street Pho

When is information true and useful and when is it just “propaganda?” Why in fact is an image or phrase or animated art sequence “propaganda” rather than it simply being a “lie?” What about acceptable lies that define our society as much as they degrade it - - for example commercials that obviously hype a product with untruths or political advertisements full of unachievable platitudes.

Munich, Days 3-7: Sex WorldI've been in München, Deutschland for the past week. I haven't gotten lazy with my journals, however. I just simply felt different about my stay here than what I experienced in Zagreb and Beograd. But I'm leaving tomorrow to move on to Italy, so I feel like I should write a tiny recap! In Munich, I feel a sense of comfort and belonging. It is a culture I know and rather than feel like a sidelined note-taking spectator, I felt inclusive to the culture, like I was a part of it. That's not to say I felt completely like an outsider in the Balkans--not at all. But in that case, it took conscientious effort for me to fit in and even then, I had no internal feeling that I was really "making it." Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.More Like This

Today, August 7th, 2012, marks 12 years since deviantART's creation - aka, it's our 12th birthday! In the last 12 years, we, as a community, have grown by leaps and bounds, fostered creative thought and dialogue, and submitted a lot of artwork - over 220 million deviations. It's with great honor and pleasure that we invite you to party with us as we toast to another devious year of art!
Introducing the First Ever Creative Grants Recipients!
On May 1, 2012, deviantART introduced the Creative Grants program - a source of funding allowing artists to make creative dreams a reality. We're pleased to announce the first cycle of funding has ended, and from the over 500 applicat
deviantART is applying to manage .artMore Like This
deviantaRT is applying to manage a new Top Level Domain called .art
Top Level Domain (TLD) is the technical name for ".com," ".net," ".org," or ".fr". These TLDs are controlled and issued by a worldwide organization called ICANN, short for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. When ICANN announced that it would accept applications for new TLDs, deviantART quickly realized that someone would try to nab ".art."
DeviantART is committed to have the .art TLD in the hands of representatives of the arts; people who know something about the Internet and the way art is presented and enabled by the Internet. Nobody has more experience with this than the deviantART community that we are all building, participating in, and sharing with each other every day.
In order to secure .art into the right hands, deviantA

Introducing the Premium Content PlatformMore Like This
DeviantART is proud to announce our Premium Content Platform
Providing the ability for content creators to become sellers and generate real earnings by making digital files of their high-quality work available for download. Sellers are able to set their own prices while retaining 80% of all revenue earned, and buyers are able to quickly get the things they want with the satisfaction of supporting the artists they love.
What is Premium Content?
The Premium Content Platform was built to represent high-quality content — the premier pieces in an artist's repertoire of work. We encourage the sale of everything from comics or stories for download, to high-res files like .PSDs, textures, tutorials, brush packs, and more!

Not a troll was stirring, nor Grinch in his sleigh.
Deviations were hung in digital Galleries with care,
In hopes that +Favourites soon would be there.
The n00bs were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Daily Deviations danced in their heads.
And Fella in his 'kerchief, and +spyed with his night-light,
Had just settled down to log-off for the night,
When over in the Forums there arose such a clatter,
Fella sprang back online to see what was the matter.
To the browser window he flew like a flash,

When what to his art-loving eyes should appear,
But an animated sleigh and eight commissioned reindeer,
With a little old driver, so creative and slick,
Fella knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than broadband, his reindeer were famed,

The Reason I Do ArtThe Reason I Do ArtMore Like This
Ask anyone in the community why they do art. I’m sure that you’re going to find a variety of answers, but that they’ll come back to the same things: because they love it, it helps them express themselves. Art is awesome, because it does allow us to do these things. It’s certainly a part of the reason why I do art. Other reasons? Because I like pretty things, and want to create them. Because I get so excited every time I have a photoshoot or every time I pull up those images onto my computer. Because that moment when you go to pick up your film after waiting for 24+ hours to see how they turned out is just so, so sweet. Because no matter how good I become at it, I can always get better. I’ll never stop learning. The final reason? Because I have to. It’s an urge in me that I just cannot quell.
Something makes me sad, though. What makes me sad is when I see a person, a fellow artist, quit.

There is no cosmic law that states artists must suffer many long years and demeaning day-jobs before a window of opportunity cracks open just enough to hop on through.
Fellow deviant Brian Kesinger is a case in point.
His first “day-job” in 1996—he was hired straight out of his senior year of high school—was drawing Tarzan for Disney.
Brian stayed at Disney and he considers every day there a part of his ongoing education as an artist. He most recently worked on “Wreck It Ralph,” and has become active in the story department, where he dreams up fresh narratives and new characters with fellow Story Artists and Disney directors.
But more and more, he is being recognized for his own style and own creations

It will always go something like this "You draw this for us, and we will include your name in the credits. That's good publicity for you!" as if such a pathetic offer holds any merit.
There was one specific case where a guy wanted to use my drawing as a book cover but didn't want to pay. He said he might print up to 50,000 books, so that's like an amazing offer of 50,000 views for me right? Wrong. 50,000 is nothing. We live in the information revolution. t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

Things you should never ask an Artist to do:
1. Free Work.
Do I really have to explain this one?You wouldn't walk into any other business offering a service and ask for free clothes or a burger right? No, you pay for them without question and they take a lot less creativity, time to make and cost a lot less. Why ask people to work for free on something you couldn't make yourself? If you believe in your vision, then I suggest find funding for it to pay the people doing the work for you. This goes for family as well, don't get me wrong, I love my family and enjoy doing something for them but it means so much more when I OFFER to do something for free than when it's expected. Let the artist decide whether or not they want to give their time for free without asking them, as a rule treat them with res
Love to hear your opinion! The art of storytelling is as boundless and diverse as the stories themselves. With the rise of the digital age and instant communication, story creators can now receive immediate feedback from the audiences. Sometimes, the audience will give critiques and demand changes to the story. Those of you in the gaming community will be familiar with the outrage over Mass Effect 3's ending, and those who love TMNT will know about the dissatisfaction over changing turtles to aliens. If so many people dislike something, should the creators reflect on the audience's critiques and make the necessary changes to please them, or stick to their original vision?More Like This

Seniority Announcements - January 2013More Like This
This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
:faq29:
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many other

This article has been written both for #projecteducate's Community Week and for the second #FeedbackFrenzy contest.
There are many tutorials right here on deviantART, most of which are provided by other deviants for free. All of us can take a look at these tutorials, and hopefully learn something new. While it's wonderful people spend their spare time helping others learn for free, the truth is some tutorials are much better than others. In this article, I am aiming to share my tutorial-writing knowledge to help others make their tutorials better! After all, if you're going to spend some of your spare time writing a tutorial, you might as well make it the best it can be!
What are you good at?
First of all, think about what you're good at! If you haven't already decided what you want to write your tutorial on, you'll need to have a think about the sorts of things you're good at, which you could teach others. You don't ha
Starting with dA CSSBack when CSS was allowed for journals for the first time there had been only a few deviants like `ClaireJones, `Lilyas or =kuschelirmel-stock who provided free skins for everyone. Through the time more and more people enjoyed working on CSS skins and we also got the chance to skin our galleries.More Like This
These days, and thanks to the great resources about journal and gallery CSS that have been created, it is possible for nearly everyone to code their own skins and/or to share them with others. Still there are many people who struggle with some basic things, which is why we want to focus on some of them here.General
Where can you use CSS/HTML
On deviantART you can only use HTML and CSS on your journals, group blogs, your custom gallery folders, as well as your groups' galleries.
When you customize your profile widgets you can't add CSS or HTML like you can for journals/galleries. All you can do is using existing dA code that can be re-us

Typography is a rather obscure field, which is quite odd because typography is in everything you read. As such, it’s very important for a graphic designer to know everything there is to know about typography and preferably also the history and anatomy of typefaces. Bad typography is usually only consciously noticeable by type geeks (like me), however even someone who knows absolutely nothing about typography will find text with bad typography harder to read. In this article you will learn some basic principles and features to advance your typography.
Software
Before we have a look at the features to improve your typography we have to select the right software. A few features which will be discussed in this article can be used pretty much regardless of the software but for most things you have to use genuine design software, so a program like Microsoft Word won’t suffice. You can achiev
Design tips: TypographyMore Like ThisAvoid the use of the font Optima, particularly for luxury or similarly "fancy" types of clients. It looks generally dated and plain.
Try not to pair different sans-serif fonts (ex: Arial and Helvetica), but if you do, do not use fonts that are similar. The key is to use fonts that are distinctly different, such as a condensed sans for headlines and regular sans like Helvetica or Verdana for subheads or body copy. If you use two that are similar, it will look like you mistakenly didn't update all your text with the same font.
If you want to pair a serif font with a sans-serif or vice versa, there are 3 options you should use to make your decisions:
1) Select fonts made by the same typographer, or
2) Select fonts made around the same time period, or
3) Select fonts with similarly shaped characters
(Note: The reason why the rules may be different between pairing serif/sans-serif fonts and pairing two sans-serif fonts is that serif fonts have ex
