Calling All Professionals and Organizations
DeviantART is getting a tremendous, positive response to our call for support for the application by DAdotART for the .ART domain.
We now have a special request for professional artists, art directors, creative directors, curators, educators and others employed directly in the arts to show their support in their professional capacities.
We also have a special request to members of the deviantART community who belong to organizations involved in the arts to submit an indication of support from the organization.
The idea of an address on the Internet ending in .ART is compelling to all of us in the arts. It would instantly verify an intention on the part of that location completely different than the intentions sh

Seniority Announcements - January 2013More Like This
This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after ` -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many other
Starting with dA CSSBack when CSS was allowed for journals for the first time there had been only a few deviants like ClaireJones, Lilyas or kuschelirmel-stock who provided free skins for everyone. Through the time more and more people enjoyed working on CSS skins and we also got the chance to skin our galleries.More Like This
These days, and thanks to the great resources about journal and gallery CSS that have been created, it is possible for nearly everyone to code their own skins and/or to share them with others. Still there are many people who struggle with some basic things, which is why we want to focus on some of them here.
Where can you use CSS/HTML
On deviantART you can only use HTML and CSS on your journals, group blogs, your custom gallery folders, as well as your groups' galleries.
When you customize your profile widgets you can't add CSS or HTML like you can for journals/galleries. All you can do is using existing dA code that can be re-us

Typography is a rather obscure field, which is quite odd because typography is in everything you read. As such, it’s very important for a graphic designer to know everything there is to know about typography and preferably also the history and anatomy of typefaces. Bad typography is usually only consciously noticeable by type geeks (like me), however even someone who knows absolutely nothing about typography will find text with bad typography harder to read. In this article you will learn some basic principles and features to advance your typography.
Before we have a look at the features to improve your typography we have to select the right software. A few features which will be discussed in this article can be used pretty much regardless of the software but for most things you have to use genuine design software, so a program like Microsoft Word won’t suffice. Design tips: Typography Avoid the use of the font Optima, particularly for luxury or similarly "fancy" types of clients. It looks generally dated and plain.More Like This
Try not to pair different sans-serif fonts (ex: Arial and Helvetica), but if you do, do not use fonts that are similar. The key is to use fonts that are distinctly different, such as a condensed sans for headlines and regular sans like Helvetica or Verdana for subheads or body copy. If you use two that are similar, it will look like you mistakenly didn't update all your text with the same font.
If you want to pair a serif font with a sans-serif or vice versa, there are 3 options you should use to make your decisions:
1) Select fonts made by the same typographer, or
2) Select fonts made around the same time period, or
3) Select fonts with similarly shaped characters
(Note: The reason why the rules may be different between pairing serif/sans-serif fonts and pairing two sans-serif fonts is that serif fonts have ex

t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

Things you should never ask an Artist to do:
1. Free Work.
Do I really have to explain this one? You wouldn't walk into any other business offering a service and ask for free clothes or a burger right? No, you pay for them without question and they take a lot less creativity, time to make and cost a lot less. Why ask people to work for free on something you couldn't make yourself? If you believe in your vision, then I suggest find funding for it to pay the people doing the work for you. This goes for family as well, don't get me wrong, I love my family and enjoy doing something for them but it means so much more when I OFFER to do something for free than when it's expected. Let the artist decide whether or not they want to give their time for free without asking them, as a rule treat them with res
Love to hear your opinion! The art of storytelling is as boundless and diverse as the stories themselves. With the rise of the digital age and instant communication, story creators can now receive immediate feedback from the audiences. Those of you in the gaming community will be familiar with the outrage over Mass Effect 3's ending, and those who love TMNT will know about the dissatisfaction over changing turtles to aliens. A Brief Discussion On Limited PaletteA Brief Discussion On Limited PaletteMore Like This
We all know that temptation when we see a pretty new colour in the art-shop, or the urge to create a mesmerizing colourful artwork while planning a painting. We then use our favourite colour(s) in full force - by means of as much as we want - and we often have more than one favourite colour....
Aftermath: A muddy or unreal canvas! Colours do not look right and did not turn out exactly as it was in our mind - not even close and harmony is far away! It turned into a visual cacophony!
What might get wrong? A lot of things! But specially all those pretty colours you put at will!
It is not bad to paint with many colours - many big artists paint with more than 70 colours on their palette. Even we do not finish a painting in less than 10 colours - right? The difference is that the famous or big artists have mastered

Work on their personal project
I got three tips I’m about to write, and it’s just advice and things that I found useful for myself. If you are capable to do any of these things you should definitely try them.
Fear. Get rid of it. If you are fearful of the outcome it will unmotivate you immediately. Just finish whatever it is and think about how you can improve after. If you can’t see what you need to improve ask someone else to tell you. There is always room to improve, and if you go into a critique with an open mind you will grow exponentially.
Think of it like this. If you were running one lap, and half way through you stopped because you were afraid you were going to throw up or pass out, you will never really know how fast you can run that lap. You didn’t push yours

We love creatures of all shapes and sizes. I grew up with dogs and have always loved them as friends and adventure buddies. This concept started out as sketches in my black book, and I worked out many styles.
From foxes to long cats to wolves to simple barking dogs, I was drawing them all in marker, ball-point pen, and pencil. I liked that each of them had a different feeling that was really accentuated by the choice of drawing tool.
During this process, I went to a drawing party, and there was a fun little canine there named Dexter. I considered him for the piece, along with some other dog friends of the same breed. Using brush pens, china crayons, and thick markers, I ended up with a multi-media piece that I think truly captures this little guy’s atti

Also known as Daily Deviation. It is a daily feature given since the beginning of deviantART to showcase a few selected pieces. For 24 hours it will be seen at the footer or at the DD page. Afterwards it will vanish among the older DD pages. It will be forgotten instantly after those 24h and only gets a bit attention when CVs do their monthly DD feature again or when someone stumbles across them by accident.
Artworks featured as a DD can be easily recognized by that little red heart framed by a golden background below the actual deviation. It often comes together with comments like "Congratulations for the DD".

Miyazaki drops some writing knowledge"Lauded animated film director Hayao Miyazaki says anime suffers when the people making it can't stand observing real people.More Like This
Hayao Miyazaki spoke out against the anime industry in a recent television interview. He recently retired, making The Wind Rises his final film, with many of his previous works such as Spirited Away becoming popular even outside of Japan. According to Miyazaki the quality of anime is suffering because industry staff is made up of "otaku," or people who obsessively love anime.
The term "otaku" has a rather negative connotation in Japan and is used more to classify fans who obsess over something (this need not be anime). Miyazaki's specific concerns are over the lack of attention paid to people in real life. He said people in the industry "don't spend time watching real people" and can be characterized as "humans who can't stand looking at other humans." He then called the industry "full of otaku."

When people do give attention to that question, they'll often come up with characters that are either loved or hated by everyone, that have epic superpowers or superhuman abilities that no one (not even God) can ever hope to topple, and if they do somehow get beaten the shit out of them suddenly remember that there's an even greater power sleeping within them, which they will instantly activate no matter if they got just a scratch or are severely wounded. The addition of infinite scroll on Daily Deviations allows you to quickly discover even more hand-selected deviations. This all adds up to more control over what you use most and makes it easier to discover great artists and their art.
The More menu, which was previously available next to the DeviantArt logo, has been better organized and moved to a more prominent and convenient location. This change was based on community feedback that its previous placement was hard to find, and its contents overwhelming.

Holiday Card Project 2014More Like This
The deviantART #HolidayCardProject is back for its 8th year! With the goal of bringing a bit of holiday cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the Holiday Card Project connects artists from around the world, applying their tremendous artistic abilities to designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.
In 2013 alone, the Project received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 2,000 deviants from 60 different countries/political regions. Cards were then divvied up and distributed by deviantART members to local Los Angeles hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for deviantART volunteers and hospital staff members to hand out to patients.
The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who sends in a card will
Introducing Improved CollectionsMore Like This
Giving curators the recognition they deserve.
With the launch of the Watch Feed, you can also now watch Collections made by other deviants. Collections are surfaced through the Watch Feed, creating a new way to discover and expose artwork on DeviantArt. Collections have been given additional exposure by appearing on deviation pages as well as tag pages.
“I am loving Collections as well. I am proud of my Collections and am glad they will finally be getting notice. And it also gives more exposure to the artists as this is more viral in nature than simply faving something then making an art feature journal to share it with others.” —GillianIvy
When you watch someone, you’ll automatically be watching all of their Collections — but you can also choose to enable or disable watching Collections on a deviant
Introducing the Watch Feed and Status UpdatesMore Like This
Connecting you with your watchers.
The Watch Feed creates a sequential stream of activity from your watchlist, including deviations, Journals, Collections, Status Updates, Polls, Forum threads and Critiques. Status Updates let people share quick updates about what they’re working on or what inspires them. Find an awesome deviation? Share it in your Status Update.
As we designed our upcoming Mobile app, we understood the need to build something streamlined and direct to deliver what you want to watch. The Watch Feed was built for smartphones and tablets. While we love the robust tools available in the Message Center — and they’re not going away — the Message Center is not an environment that works well on mobile.

Introducing TagsMore Like This
Discover more of your favorite topics.
Tags create landing pages around topics — making it easier to discover related artwork, bringing together artists and art appreciators, and forming communities around common interests. As DeviantArt grows and creates new ways to discover great content, we believe tags will play an important role in better surfacing artwork.
Tag Deviations, Collections, and Status Updates
You now have the ability to tag your deviations and Collections. Tags added to your deviations will be publicly viewable — this is a change from the previous use of keywords, which were private. Visitors can learn about your work by viewing how you tagged it, and can find more works by you and other deviants based on tags. Tags can also be used in comments, Status Updates, Journals, and Collections.
Tagging your deviations and Collections will improve their visibility across the
