Back on the ship’s top side, Deryn swung her head back around to find Harkness, but he was no where to be found. Where the hell could he have gone? He couldn’t have just left her up here by herself with the Lieutenant free falling to the earth.
The blast shields were sealed shut when Deryn reached them, and the closest nest was still too far away. Her only option was to call for help some how. But there was no way to signal anyone, nor any way for her to send a message.
“Clart!” Deryn spat as she smashed her fists against the shields.
There was nothing she could do from here, she needed a new plan. But what? Searching around she found something strange. A glider set tied to a hook on the bottom shield. H

“Hey you guys, its me!” the voice continued to get louder as if it was coming closer.
“Hey, who is that shouting your name?” Harkness asked.
“No one,” Deryn hissed
“He seems like he knows you,” Richards said.
“Yeah, well right now, we don’t. Just ignore him,” Deryn whispered

Of course, Lt. Christopher was an Officer. Out ranked most of the crew too, but he held himself at the lower crewman's level. He didn't care for anything fancy, having a nice coat that would keep him warmer would be nice. But if it only went to him. Why bother to have one if the rest of the crewmen didn't get one? But he would never get the end of things. The Lieutenant. Now that would be an even worse situation. That man was built to do one thing and knew how do to that better than any man alive.
How was Eddie suppose to get out of a jam like this in at least one piece?
Softly, Deryn placed a hand on the Lt.’s shoulder and he grabbed onto it as a natural reaction. Too many memories that dealt with the same experience. But he glanced over at her and then rubbed her hand.

Show It, Don't Tell ItOne of the many things that make me hit the back button, put down the short story, or return the book to the library is "telling". The minute the author decides to state that "X was angry" or "Y was bored", I get angry or I get bored. I've seen this issue for years--heck, I used to have this issue myself--in both fanfiction and original fiction alike, and while many reviewers/commenters often call out the author on it, they never really explain the concept. Thus, the poor beleaguered newbie gets hate over something he/she may not fully grasp.More Like This

What is "Telling"?

A fountain of purest substance,
flooded with lies...
Tainted by insult;
my disrespected youth
Shrouded in deceit
and deviated from the truth.
Beaten down by those
who held my trust...
And taken advantage of
with a searing lust
with anything that I said;
Whether 'twas fib or fact,

I barely withstood
their trembling fury
Tormented and questioned

I could take it no longer;

My virtue was eclipsing;

I lost my path in dusk;
my innocence fled to darker lands
With a box of sharp objects,
I took matters into my own hands...
Shrouded by mists of confusion and pain,
I didn't know what to do
Left afraid and alone,
there was not one soul I could turn to...
And even if there was...
They wouldn't have cared to know...
They wouldn't have cared at all...
And they wouldn't have understood.

This was the first time she'd seen the dugout full; so far, the injuries on the Darwinist side of the trenches had been light, with few serious injuries and even fewer casualties.
It looked like that had changed. Among the injured Clankers lay a few soldiers in Darwinist combat gear, but the majority of them looked like they were in better condition than any of the o

Dr Barlow Labels a LorisDr Barlow never cursed or lost her cool, she was the embodiment of scientific detachment and rationality, the rock around which everyone could rally. Whatever about that, the cascade of recent events had upset even her equilibrium: the alpha loris crushed; the beta loris stolen away, thrown into a revolution, imprinted onto not one but two persons and even had a name inflicted on it. That was entirely unscientific, unrealistic and impractical; it violated the very bedrock of fabricist principles ... you didn't give a name to your knife, fork or spoon and fabrications were every bit as much things and tools as that, even if they were living ones.More Like This
