Please choose your names carefully. I cannot stress enough the importance of names, they provide the first impression of your character. If you are not writing with a great deal of description, or are leaving the bulk of your character description until later, then the name you choose may create the enduring impression on the reader.
One of the things that can make your writing seem painfully amateur is the desire to choose ‘unusual’ for your characters. There is a fine line between distinct names and absurd ones. Usually it’s better to play it safe.
One of the warning signs is if your names carry an inordinate amount of ‘x’s’ or ‘y’s’ or are otherwise spelt strangely. These harsh sounds in names make them seem less natural and therefore are not suited for most story types. Names such as ‘Zeyke’ and ‘Xande’ might suit a science-fiction setting, if the rest of the language fits, but they do not
