The ground lay thick with snow, stained orange by the street lamps above, as I padded up the hill. I was on the prowl, hunting my prey. I'd caught the scent a while ago; musky, warm, still fresh in the chilled air around me. A rat; I could see it's tracks in the freshly settled snow, ahead of me. It was big. But I was more than capable of bringing it down. I would feed well tonight.
Not a sound in the air as I walked past silent houses – not like during the day, when dogs barked and people cooed at me or shouted, waving angry fists in the air as I appeared in a garden for a drink from a bird bath. Hmm, birds, they were a challenge; taunting me as they flew up into higher branches, out of my reach. But when they got too confident, they made mistakes and one out of three times did I usually catch one.
No birds singing tonight though, it was too early for the Dawn Chorus. Strange as it may seem, there were no other cats around either; not that that bothered me; it made it e
