(UN-enlarged view is about actual size of drawing)

This is Bryan Cranston, as "Walter White" from the hit AMC original series "Breaking Bad". It is being called "the best show on TV" and IS in my opinion! In fact, it's delayed airing of Season 4 is in July, and starting TONIGHT, they are airing ALL 3 seasons, between now and when S4 starts in July.

My fav parts to draw on this one? Trying to figure out how to draw his broken glasses of course, the band-aid in the middle of his glasses and the shadow against the wall on his right I felt gave it some depth? :D:D

My Dislikes: The cut on his lip, and forehead could be better :(

SIZE: 7.5 wide x 7 inches tall
TIME: about 12 hours
PAPER: Bristol Smooth 300 series
PENCILS: Staedtler H, HB, F, B, 2B

We got to meet his partner in the show "Jessie Pinkman" played by Aaron Paul, at Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago in 2010, when our son Andrew Belle played there.

My Step work here:

As of 9-7-2012 I got this from Vince Gilligan himself, after sending this original to his office headquarters, where it hangs proudly in the entry hall for cast, crew, etc to view :D:D

Synopsis: Breaking Bad is an American television drama series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. Set and produced in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Breaking Bad is the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the beginning of the series. He turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), with the aim of securing his family's financial future before he dies.

Luis with Drawing

FIRST...Luis just joined DA so he could comment below (lmoncada77), so everyone go "watch" him [link]

SECOND...BOTH views are LARGER than actual drawing (had to draw small, see below)

This is Luis Moncada. He and his brother Daniel played The Salamanca brothers, the Cartel Killer Hit men on Breaking Bad, Season 3 - episodes 1 through 6. I will be sending the original to Luis, and plan to draw several other characters from the show.

Season 5 will start July 15th and is said to have 8 episodes this summer, with 8 more episodes in the summer of 2013, which will either be considered Season 6 or the 2nd 1/2 of season 5. Either way, it will be the final season :(

This may have been my most challenging drawing, BECAUSE the largest reference photo I could find was not large enough to view fine details. Neither Luis himself or the Art Dept at Breaking Bad could find a larger file! If not for Luis working with me on this, letting me know the details were correct as I went along, I could not, and would not have attempted this, no matter how much I wanted to draw the photo. You guys know EXACTLY what I mean!?! I was basically imagining the details. One of the things I had to do, was draw this as SMALL as possible, so I could draw from a smaller than typical reference photo, because I could see more details when I printed the ref pic smaller :D:D

PS - his right pupil (our left) was not exactly rounded on both sides in the reference photo, and I drew it that way. Wishing I had corrected it now. Like someone once told me, if it looks strange in a photo, it will look even stranger in your drawing. Sometimes we need to take a little artistic license and change it to look more natural?

He was in episodes 1 - 3. Follow him on Twitter as @MaxArciniega and visit www.MaxArciniega.com and check out his music!

STEPS

I'm mailing this to Max, who will get me a photo of him holding it soon. Just like the other Breaking Bad mug shots, his was also too small. I had to use a music promo photo he gave me and basically create a hair style closer to his character Krazy 8, although he was a lot dirtier after Walt and Jesse got him down in the basement, so this is an original drawing :D:D

ENLARGED view is about the same size as the drawing

WIPs

Reference Photo Credit goes to:

I FINALLY finished my commissioned drawing for Tyrone Wells and his wife Elina.

First about the drawing...
SIZE: 13 x15 inches (edge to edge) depending on how they mat the borders? I left the top end open and adjustable for matting and framing, not knowing what they'd like best, or what may fit a certain frame size.
TIME: close to 20 hours! (Longest EVER spent on a single work!)
PAPER: Strathmore Bristol SMOOTH 300 series drawing stock
PENCILS: Staedtler Mars Lumograph H, HB, F, B, 2B, 3B, 4B and my new favorite toy, a Pentel 0.5 mm mechanical pencil using B & 2B for the "stray hairs" and for redefining tight spots and final adjustments to imperfections.

I had to photograph this drawing, because it is too large to fit in my scanner, so it lacks some details as a result. As we all know, originals are better than photos or scans?

Photo vs Drawing

About them: I met Tyrone and his wife, Elina at 2 concerts (October 22 & 24th 2010) because my son (Andrew Belle) was touring with him. They are both singer-songwriters, who recently got married. I started to draw his photo from his cd cover on the 22nd. See that drawing here

When we saw him again 2 days later, he liked my work, and asked if I would be interested in drawing him and his wife, and he held up his laptop with the photo, which struck me right away as inspirational. Both for it's contrast, design, facial expressions and because I really like them! (Google Tyrone Wells and/or check out his music on iTunes and Youtube)

Check out his myspace here: [link] and give Sea Breeze a listen?

I'm also posting separate cropped sections of each of them alone, as well as that cool microphone! View them here...
:thumb185126036:
On a personal note: I put 100% effort into this one! I held NOTHING back, and even when I "thought" it was finished, I spent a few more hours with a magnifying glass and my mechanical pencil sharpening, and redefining the dark areas. As a result, I consider it to be my BEST work to date?

I get asked all the time, "how did u get the dark areas so black?" Long story I explain in great detail in my TIP GUIDE: [link]

CHALLENGES:
1) I have never done a complete side-view profile, and was worried about the ability to "capture" someones eye from the side. Think about your eyes being different from the other 6.5 BILLION on this earth?!?
2) Going so large. I have spent 2 years and 150 portraits to discover the perfect balance between size and time required (6" faces). This is my largest drawing to date. I had to tape sections of paper over the areas I had not yet drawn on, to protect them from getting touched. And then when I was almost done with him, I taped him up to protect that area while I drew her, and then covered both while I drew the microphone & background.
3) Ears: I always seem to mess up the ears, but was happy with this one?
4) High Res: Of course we look for the highest resolution photos as a reference, but the one he gave me was SO high res, I felt I had to draw the pores on his head!? I did draw a few hairs I saw in his ear (click DOWNLOAD to see)
5) Hair: As you know, I don't like drawing hair. It takes too much time. I killed at least 1 full 2B on hers, but made up for it with his! :D:D
6) His shirt: My portraits concentrate on faces only, so therefore I don't have practice with clothes. To make this worse, he had a ti-died shirt on, which would require a lot of details (2 hours alone?) I got his permission to change his shirt color. At first I thought I'd just go with black, but then started pulling out some graphite with my kneaded eraser and I like the texture look, so I just worked on it more?
7) Blending such a large background
8) I thought, "oh, it's two profiles, that's kinda like ONE whole face?" WRONG! :D:D

I recently learned how to put thumbnails in this comment section, and wanted to put a few reference photo vs. drawings in my gallery. (TO DO that, look above the Statistics on the right, and under SHARE is a thumbnail link. Just copy-paste that into this comment section and they will appear) :D:D

This was too large for my scanner, so it's a photo, and not that good. This was a commission piece for singer-songwriters Tyrone & Elina Wells

As you can see, I changed his shirt color with permission. I didn't feel I could reproduce that pattern?

See full drawing here

ENLARGED Sections (photos not scans)

BEFORE I drew this large piece, I had drawn just him, using a reference photo from one of his CDs, but I didn't take nearly as much time, cuz it was free ha! :D:D It's supposed to be out of focus around the edges. I need to practice that technique more...

I have it displayed in 700 pixels wide, which is about 1 inch WIDER than the actual drawing :D:D 2 years later (7/1/12) I see many areas I could improve on today ;)

* Strathmore Bristol Smooth
* 6 x 6-1/2 inches (15x17cm)
* Staedtler Pencils: H, HB, B, 2B, 3B
* Approx 9 hours

I've seen others draw this in the past, and I always knew I would one day. Well, I finally did it? I was most challenged by all the tiny buildings in the reflection of his glasses.

Duck Dynasty - ENLARGED VIEW is ACTUAL SIZE
This was too larger to scan as one piece, so I merged 2 scans together.
This is MUCH smaller than my typical drawing size, which I keep to about 5 to 6 inch faces.

SIZE 10 x 14 inches

Willie Robertson Phil Robertson Si Robertson Jase Robertson

These are the boys from A&E’s show Duck Dynasty. Top left is Willie Robertson with his dad Phil Robertson to the right. Bottom left is Phil’s brother and Willie’s uncle Si with Willie’s brother Jase Robertson.
This was by far my most challenging drawing that I have ever done. If I were to draw this based on my typical face size of between 5 and 6 inches, and factor in their facial hair, this should have taken me 40+ hours to complete, and I would have NEVER held on to completion. See my blog post regarding optimal size for drawing portraits here drpencil.wordpress.com/2012/07…

With that in mind, I decided to reduce that optimal size in half, and go with approximately 3 inch faces. It still took me between 20 and 25 hours, over the course of about 3 weeks, and I drew most of it under a magnifying glass. I wasn’t quite sure how to approach doing that much hair with all the beards, because typically I use an indenting technique, where you 1st scratch the paper with a stylus and then go over with graphite to create a rubbing type affect. See my blog post on this here drpencil.wordpress.com/2012/07…

Mike Sibley has been EXCELLENT article about indenting www.sibleyfineart.com/tutorial… His book “Drawing from Line to Life” is the ONLY drawing book that I own and covers every conceivable aspect of drawing and techniques. I highly recommend it!!! www.sibleyfineart.com/pencil-d…

I love the show Duck Dynasty because it’s about family, faith in God and a simple life living off the land. Plus my entire Family Tree is from the southern states, and I myself was born in Texas, so I have a lot of Southern pride. But these guys are just good old boys and except for their beards, their strong southern drawl accent reminds me of my friends and fraternity brothers in college, when I went to college in Georgia in the early 1980s.

Well, this took me a while! It's only 5 inches tall by 15 inches wide (about 1/2 my normal portrait size) which I reduced to save time, but still took me about 30 hours?

I had to JOIN 2 scans cuz it was too big for my scanner. You can see the line between George and Elaine. I also uploaded each side separately, along with a side-by-side comparison of what I drew 4 years ago :D

Breaking Bad

When chemistry teacher, Walter White, is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given only two years to live, he decides he has nothing to lose. He lives with his wife and teenage son, who has cerebral palsy, in New Mexico. Determined to ensure that his family will have a secure future, White embarks on a career of drugs and crime. He proves to be remarkably proficient in this new world as he begins manufacturing and selling methamphetamine with one of his former students. The series tracks the impacts of a fatal diagnosis on a regular hard working man and explores how a fatal diagnosis affects his morality and transforms him into a major player of the drug trade.

Walter White is scheikundeleraar.
