I look to my side, I’m in a hospital ward and my friend Daisy is asleep in the bed next to me. I try to call out to her but I make no sound. Many questions run through my mind, and then I remember; the coughing and screaming. My eyes are stinging and my throat and lungs are burning, the thick smoke choking me, and then I’m drifting. The bright orange light becomes blurred and faint until I see no more.
I try to sit up, my arms are bandaged from the burns and I look across to Daisy’s bed, she is waking up.
“Daisy.” I call weakly to her, but as Daisy turns her head she fades from my sight.
“She’s awake.” I hear a nurse call and she hurries towards me. Her eyes are warm and comforting, and she smiles, I tried to smile back.
“What happened?” I ask slowly, the nurse’s smile lessens and she sits down in the plastic chair beside my bed.
