Photomanipulation walkthroughStep 1: Idea (message, composition)
You decided that you want to make a photomanipulation. But what to make? There are so many photomanipulations already out there and mostly with the same theme. So you decide you don't just want to stick a pretty girl onto a beautiful background. No you want to be original and have your manipulation portray a message everyone can relate to.
Think of things that are important to you, that lay close to your heart. They can be emotions (love, hate, sadness, anger) or experiences, hobbies (art, sports etc), things you are struggling with. Or they can be global themes like (beauty, money, economy, eating disorders, war, relationships etc.)
Of course if you choose to portray something as love there are many ways to do so. Do you want it to be a surreal depiction of love, or dark, fantasy, sci-fi, conceptual, humourous... your choice will of course decide the whole 'feel' of the image.
So choose wisely as they say.
Now that you have your theme you nee
How to suggest a Daily DeviationHello!More Like This
According to one of our polls at Traditionalists, there are many people who don't know how to suggest a Daily Deviation - too many, really. In this article you'll learn all about suggesting DDs: it'll be focused on Traditional Art category, but the general rules are the same for all the categories on dA.
So you've just encountered an outstanding work - or had one for ages in your favourites - and you'd like it so much to be seen by everyone on dA. Before you suggest anything, you need to check if its author had a DD within past 6 months, as one deviant can have only 1 DD per 180 days. How? Add "dds" to their profile address, so:
username.deviantart.com would turn into username.deviantart.com/dds

Abandoned Hospitals and Asylums are one of the most popular sites amongst Urban Explorers and whilst we don't get the same variety of choice in the UK as Americans might do, we do have a fair share of interesting forgotten locations. But in the USA, from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, over 250 institutions for the 'insane' were built. These places housed over half a million patients... Imagine the secrets the remaining walls hold! The reason for the now abandonment of these once thriving hives of activity was the move towards more community based care, more developed medications and of course, stricter laws.

(Catholic) Loyalty (and Dialectism)Aandacht! Achtung! The following is an explicitly Catholic rant. While this rant can theoretically be enjoyed by one of any stripe, it is predominately concerned with Catholic issues.More Like This
I'm one of those strange, clannish people you sometimes, by which I mean rarely, hear about. As of late I have had some troubles in my Congregation, which I have since left due to irreconcilable tension, pending my formation of a friendship with the lady who has since become my best friend. (I am currently searching for a surrogate Congregation that I can call home.) By clannish, I mean I am very relational. My loyalty (a sure sign of honour) is very important to me and can be ranked thusly: 1. Loyalty to the Tribe, and 2. Loyalty to the Clan.
The Tribe is a loose term which for me can be defined as including people of my own Faith (Catholic) and of loose to close relation. For me, relation does not necessarily limit itself to blood. Since I define friendship very archaically (think in terms of the fivefo
Saint Joseph ReflectionToday is the Feast Day of Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph was the foster-father of the Lord when He condescended and took on human flesh. Today, he is the Patron Saint of the Church Universal - but also of woodworkers, craftsmen, homes, and various other things up to and culminating in (hopefully) a perfect end, which these days is rendered "peaceful death."More Like This
My best friend, who has her finger on the pulse of Liturgical orthopraxis, has advised and adjured me to reflect on this Saint - who, in addition to being summarily important, is also (theoretically) the Patron Saint of my College... and therefore my education, my most important secular goal in life. I say theoretically because SJC does not celebrate his Feast Day, not "officially" anyway. Yet we do make a big ruckus and a hullaballoo over pagan holidays such as MLK day, Washington's birthday, et cetera... none of which having anything to do with the Faith.
I have no real devotions to Saint Joseph, outside of respecting his role as Patr

The lady enquiring was the next door neighbour. I'm fairly sure she was expecting me to answer with 'fireman', 'policeman', or some other job that would fit the norm for most people. I smiled, looked at her and said, 'I'm going to be an Artist'.
Well of course, every five year old says that when they have a crayon in their hand and a face covered in colour, but I really did know at that age what I was going to do for the rest of my life. Hence, the next thirteen years of great expenditure on my private boys school education by my parents seemed, even to me, to have been a waste of money considering I knew what I was going to do.
Much to the frustration of my parents, and to the very dim view of the teachers that would comment to my folks, "We think he's bright, but all he wants to do is draw all day and stare out the window at clouds".
You see, what happens in our society is that at th
Food Photography - back to basicsFood is a necessity for daily life and good health (the right kinds anyway), but food is also fast becoming something of an Art as well as many turn to their cameras once a mammoth baking session is over and capture the delightful dishes in attractive and alluring ways. Since the beginnings of Still Life Photography, food has been a subject and whilst the topic has remained the same - methods, equipment and ease have changed in varying degrees across the years. Food Photography is still a genre that is vastly overlooked and majorly underrated in the art world.More Like This
It all began with Still Life Paintings back in the 17th Century. They were as far from commercial as a style could get and certainly weren't created with selling in mind. However the skill and main aspects that realism painters took back in the 17th Century are kept close to the hearts of Food Photographers today as they grip onto Realism, effects of light, composition and arrangement. Props have always been an important part of

Troubleshooting:How to Photograph Christmas LightsMore Like This
I recently read an article on Reddit that explored the best way to photography Christmas lights and it raised some interesting points. Rather than re-hash what has already been said, I've delved into a few tutorials around the web to give an overview of some hints and tips - and will link them all at the end of this article so that you can investigate for yourself.
When you take a Photograph, the camera will often over-compensate with the colours that it's trying to capture and objects that look fairly white to the naked eye don't appear so in the photo that you've taken. White Balance aims to override that. But just setting your camera to Auto White Balance and hoping for the best is not good enough...
The above shots show the same location taken firstly with auto white balance - and then secondly with the white balance set to shade. Setting Shade me
Celebrating Diversity #14What is art? Probably one of those questions that will remain without a definite and universal answer. However I think we all can identify art when we see it, even if we don't know to explain why.More Like This
Art has a very personal definition and there are no rights or wrongs. For me, art is to find beauty and something worth taking the time to pay close attention to, in everything that surrounds us.
Some people say everything is art. Some agree and some don't. Regardless of your position in this debate I think is safe to say that maybe not everything is art, but everything has the potential to be art, if we know where to look.

Top 10 reasons why Photomanipulation rocks.Hi everyone,More Like This
So, I was talking with a friend this morning, and she asked me, "Why do you love photomanipulation so much? You're a good photographer."
My first response was, "Uh, no, I'm not." But her question made me think. For me, I do love photomanipulation itself, but it's more about the community. I came to dA to become a better artist. But I stayed because of the people.
Here are ten reasons why I fell in love with this community. (They are really in no particular order except for #1.)
10. Our medium is accessible to everyone.
You don't have to be a great painter or photographer to learn photomanipulation (though, like anything else, it does help). It takes time and practice, and there are a lot of tutorials out there to help you learn. You can do it. There are a lot of artists out there who make amazing photomanipulations but who cannot paint very well. It is fairly easy to learn, but it takes a LOT of work to become proficient.
How to Stop Planning and Use What You've GotArticle cowritten by ShadowedAcolyte and neurotype.More Like This
We've chosen to present this in bullets. The first few are ways to tell when your planning has gone too far; the rest are how to get past that.
Featured literature was chosen for its ability to present exposition: good pacing, tantalizing hints, etc.
How do I know I've planned too much?
When you can't hold it all in your head. When you can't explain it without a long-winded summary."So you've planned X. How will you reveal X to the reader?" If you can't immediately think of a good idea, it's probably overplanned.
Volume: how much of your story is world-building/backstory?
Properly spaced, you could get up to 10% world into a story without ruining the book (e.g. for an epic fantasy or something else not set in a place readers will immediately recognize). The rest should be happening now.If the setting is much more familiar—like, Everytown, USA, it could easily be 1% backstory.

Worldbuilding: Environments and Social StructuresAre you ready to build a world? Good!More Like This
The Magic Gateway, by jerry8448. This is what we want to do with worldbuilding.
Worldbuilding is a complex process, because it is essentially creating the base of a different reality from our own. An author must pull together all the elements of a 'world', and capture that in text. This applies in any genre of writing. Even non-fiction has aspects of worldbuilding because it has setting and world details the same as fiction. In any genre, if the world is flat, the story will be flat and one of the best ways to build a fictional world is to know about one's own. Stories and readers both require an interesting and engaging place to go to, and our world, as well as any imagined one, can provide this! Because our world is the base of most human experiences, it is a great place to understand for both personal and writing reasons. If the author understands the sett

What do we mean by “story planning”?
Planning a story sounds like an easy task- even at primary school level you are taught that a story must have a beginning, a middle and an end. However there are plenty of important elements that build a story; a lot of prep work that can actually improve the quality of your novel writing in the long run. This can cover almost anything- from world building, character development, creating past history and plot mapping etc. There is a huge range of elements that can turn your idea into a strong well-structured novel.
Are you going to tell me how to write a novel?
Not exactly. We can’t tell you how to approach your novel and how to write it from chapter 1 through to the end. We’re not giv
PREMADES #Photomanipulated SubmissionRules CHANGE!First, let me clarify: I'm not just talking about premade backgrounds, but also about cut-out stock and brushes or anything else where people use images (their own or other people's) to create the resource. And while this is mainly geared toward members of Photomanipulated, I do hope that this journal will also be able to shed some light on things for others.More Like This
Personally, I've never been a fan of premade backgrounds, but I'm also not the type of person who thinks everyone else should do as I say just because I have a bad feeling about something. So far, that held true for premades: I steered clear of them because I feared copyright issues, but I didn't have much more than a bad feeling and some research on my part to confirm this. Now, an official dA blog has strengthened my believe that as an artist, using premades will do you more harm than good.
Copyright is something that often falls by the wayside with premades. And if it turns out the image

Thank you for your patience in waiting for the results; we've had a lot of work in figuring out the winners from thousands of critiques!
We had nearly 2,000 critiques during the event! There were over 160 members who were divided into 40 teams. Between them, there were thousands of deviations to be critiqued! The teams had one week to critique as many deviations as possible-- BUT to do so while maintaining the high standard of quality we are so proud to have here on deviantART!
It's easy to write a lot of comments, but it's difficult to write a lot of phenomenal comments! In scoring, we focused on both quantity and quality of critiques. In

Username Changes Now AvailableDeviantART has been around for almost twelve years, and in that time, we've seen artists grow from hobbyists to students to professionals. As a member of any community, your identity can change and grow over time.More Like This
For years, we've been getting requests from the community asking for the ability to change usernames. We realize that as an artist, it's important to give you the ability to change your personal brand, just as you change your interests, skills, and art types.
How It Works
Deviants can now change their username in their Settings. To change your username, you must have an active Premium Membership. (The reason there is a "fee" associated with the change is because switching usernames is a complex technical proce

Below you'll find a list of tutorials I personally think of as the best on dA. If I have any problems with painting something I usually take a look at one of those.
Is there anything you're having troubles with? Need help looking for a good tutorial? Or maybe you'd like to see a video walk-through of me painting something?
I'm open for suggestions for what kind of tutorial/walk-through you'd like to see from me. If you're interested in anything, post your suggestions in the comments!

MMD is artThis has been weighing on my mind for a little while. I see time and time again, people (non MMDers obviously) who bash others who use MMD saying that it is not art and it is "illegal" because it uses someone else's work.More Like This
First I would like to address the incorrect notion that it is illegal:
The modelers give the users permission to use their model by making it available for public download. Therefore, it is indeed legal as long as credit is given where credit is due and the terms and conditions of usage are being properly followed.
Secondly, MMD (MikuMikuDance for those of you who aren't familiar with the term, is a 3D posing and rendering freeware that involves usage of 3D models) is art. People put their time and energy into creating beautiful pictures and videos using MMD.
I myself have spent a whole day on one video just making sure that it was perfect and I know others who have done the same as I have. Also, art is a form of expression. MMD is a program that people use to express

As this community has grown so much over the years, so has the amount of invalid stock and resources that have been provided by some deviants. The Stock and Resources community feels like this reflects negatively on them, the volunteers have a hard time trying to teach people about valid stock and how to use it correctly, and it gives an appearance that deviantART Staff tolerate so-called “art theft” or copyright infringement.
In this article our aim is to reinforce our policies regarding stock and stock use and clear up some misconceptions.

Even though this project looks quite new, I personally dont like ir's interface. Probably because I'm used to the old MMD interface I've used for almost a year.
BUT this project has it's Pros and Cons. and I see it might have a bit more potential to the future.
-When the program suddenly crashes it has a "recovery" funcion, wich I find AMAZING. This is probably one of the best functions this program has. I really hate when I've been working on something in MMD and suddenly something goes wrong and crashes and I didn't save the file. I really hate the feeling of starting over.

Thought is inherently given in darkroom submissions either to the merging of the images in multiple exposures and overlays, or of the process going into making the final image, like the post-production in digital photo-editing software or merging of images to increase dynamic range. Pardon my language but -- what the Hell is wrong with the dA admins?
I mean really?
I get it, I really do. You're busy, you don't really want to do your job, and you've been taught to have the least possible concern for other people as you can as to avoid branding this website with a 'bad reputation'.
This place is supposedly all flowers, rainbows, and happy people frolicking away in eternal bliss sharing art, and being merry.
Meanwhile the truth is this place is the biggest joke on the internet. It's filled and continually filling up with so many sockpuppet troll accounts, cyber bullies, and spammers with such rapidity it puts Myspace or any other social media site to shame.

FB Group Targeting dA Artists Please ShareMore Like This
There is a group on Facebook that is targeting deviantArtists with the belief that stealing art is okay and that we artists are "bullies" for reporting art theft. This group is reporting artists with the goal of ruining artists' reputations and causing the pages of artists to be closed and/or removed. At this point in time, they are specifically targeting deviants whom are members of the FB group "Deviant Art Users Against Art Theft." https://www.facebook.com/groups/450009355031768/
The following artists have been targeted thus far (that I know of):
•EnchantedWhispers - now a deactivated account
•walkingtall - http://fav.me/d6pmxwz
•Wesley-Souza - http://fav.me/d6pr5n6
More information including screenshots can be found in this journal http://fav.me/d6pn1kz by BlueHorseStudios.
I'm not really sure what we as a community can do to rectify this situation, if anything. If you have a Facebook page, you
Tutorial Treasury 05In the Tutorial Treasury, you will find tutorials geared towards Photomanipulators and some that will deal with a broader subjects, such as lighting, colour etc. The tutorials will be from dA as well as from all over the web and in each episode, there will be 3 to 6 tutorials for your reading pleasure (any more than that I guess no one will have time to read anyway). If you find any good ones, shoot me a note so I can include them in the next installment!More Like This

Alternate Coping MechinismsOkay so unhealthly I've been coping with sucidal thoughts through self harm. I've tried a few self harm alternatives. But is there any that people know that work for them? Thanks.More Like This
Finding Oneself in DepressionFor all depression has ruined my life, it has also granted me things I don't think I would have learned about myself for another twenty years, if then. But it's not pretty, and I won't try to make it so. Which brings me to the key question; do you really want to know?More Like This
I've had it in my head to write a memoir about chronic pain and depression, because the parts of me I think I'd call "my soul" (for lack of paragraphs of explanation) have honestly learned more through my troubles, maybe even been better off in the long run for it. It's hard to think like that, since it has ruined my life in no mistakenly exaggerated way. But having had the thought, it makes me want to share it.
I don't think I'm ready to share a memoir, and I may never be. While publishing such a memoir might help others who find themselves in similar woeful positions, it would also bare my heart and soul to the world. I'm not sure I'm up for that, really. I may have learned from my depression, but one of the things I've
