Free adviceSomeone recently asked me for some advice about going to art college and becoming an illustrator. Here's what I said. Maybe someone here will find this interesting too...
1) It's a tough life as an artist. You need more than just good drawing abilities to get by. I know a lot of people who are WAY better than me but can't make it as artists. You need to be personable and likable. Work on your people skills and be sincere. People can tell when it's fake.
2) Learn a broad range of skills. Don't just focus on illustration, but also learn the fundamentals of design, sculpture, painting, storyboarding, etc... those skill will help you more than you can possibly imagine.
3) Be yourself. Find your own style and really refine it.
4) Don't waste your education. Don't go out and party and drink when you should be studying and doing homework. They give you that homework for a reason!
5) Always try to be the best. Challenge yourself to make your assignments the best in your class. Always try to be

Notes on Character Design
I received the question pictured below at my tumblr blog. In case it's useful to anyone here, I decided to go ahead and use this otherwise dormant journal to share the article I put together in response.
Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way, no rigid process you must adhere to, no shoulds or shouldn'ts except those you designate for yourself. This is one of the fun parts of being an artist, really - have a heady good time with it.
DA's Commissions ShopSo this is a thing! http://www.deviantart.com/commissions/More Like This
So. Your friendly neighborhood Auntie Toerning is going to step in for a second here. Firstly, I think it's very groovy and awesome that DA is establishing their own marketplace. It's a scary world out there of work for hire and it's totally awesome that DA artists now have this stepping stool to practice professional habits in the same way that we practice artistic skills!
I would like to take a moment to discuss the rates here. I was just exploring quickly, and saw on the navigation on the left "price," and, like every other human on the planet, clicked on the most expensive first, thinking to myself "wow, good for DA to promote work that costs $1,000!" and wanting to see what that work would be.
Well. Boy was I wrong. In fact the prices are organized by Points. Remember when you were a kid, and the dog peed on the Monopoly box, and so you drew dollar signs on
DON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah BradleyDon't go to art schoolMore Like This
The traditional approach is failing us. It's time for a change.
I'VE HAD IT.
I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won't do it. Unless you're given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money.
I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. I'm not some flaky, disgruntled art graduate, either. I have a quite successful career, thankyouverymuch.
But I am saddened and ashamed at art schools and their blatant exploitation of students. Graduates are woefully ill-prepared for the realities of being professional artists and racked with obscene amounts of debt. By their own estimation, the cost of a four year education at RISD is $245,816. As way

Will You Draw My Comic? Art Requests : A GuideHey guys, I really super didn't want to have to write a journal entry like this, but Jump USA or something must have a contest going because in the last two weeks I've had six requests to do a comic together with people I don't know. This year alone I've had twenty requests to do comics, and only about two of those requests have been legitimate commissions. The rest have been people asking if I would draw their comic for them, and I never hear back from them once I give them my commission rates. Considering I am pretty cheap, my guess is people are expecting me to do a full two months of work for next to nothing.More Like This
No ill will toward these folks, but I am a professional and I have to admit that I'm getting a little tired of getting asked to do freebies. My guess is people who have never worked with a professional artist before don't know how to go about contacting artists and don't realize what artists charge or expect when people go out of their way to contact them. So if you stum

And no, this isn't a wasp with an unusually long stinger. We'll save that one for later.
Every hair on the flannel moth larva is filled with venom. This particular caterpillar will only cause irritation, but others like it can be much, much worse. While some of them look like the works of Giger, most are fuzzy, beautiful, and quite tempting to pet. My advice: don't. Here are some particularly nasty examples, and the symptoms they cause.
Bag shelter caterpillar: death by hemorrhaging
Saddleback: rash and swelling

Look, I know I'm not that great of an artist. Hell, compared to a majority of artists on dA, I suck. I'll never be as good as some of the artists I fave in my gallery on a regular basis. But you know something? It's good enough for me. If it wasn't, I wouldn't post it.
If you like my art despite its primitive quality, great. If you have constructive criticism for my art, by all means, share it. But if your own life is so pathetic and joyless that you have to share your misery by leaving "Your stuff sucks" on my art, that's your problem, not mine. Keep it to yourself and don't look at my stuff. If you think it's shit, then why would you look at it? Move on to much better artists. It'll make us both happy, and you won't look like a towering asshole.
Sorry...I just realized it's been over a month since I put anything up on dA. The holidays were busy, the new semester is starting, I finally bought a new computer, and I just don't have anything done at the moment. As soon as I do, I'll be sure to post it!More Like This

1. What does your Deviantart name mean and why?
See the red robot on the left? That paint scheme is based on Manfred von Richtoften, one of my favorite flying aces of all time. His signature paint scheme is all red, hence the Red Baron. So as not to be too obvious, I used "Rouge" as "Red" (Rouge is French for red). Since I can't spell worth of crap, I misspelled Rouge as "Rogue". My fanfiction name is correct, RougeBaron. This one is wrong.

I am working on things. I have decided that my problem is I spend a long time trying to work out how to do something new to a level that I'm happy with - often getting frustrated with it and starting something else and then going back to it and then giving up again over a period of weeks or months - and then when I actually finish it instead of using my new skills to make more stuff I just start the whole process again with something new...
In short I'm a bit of a dick, but one day I will finish everything I started and post it all and it will be glorious...

Customs...I used to build custom Zoids years ago, but eventually got out of it. This was mainly because it was too time-consuming to do a good custom without having some parts very obviously being donated from something else (usually a Gundam kit). For example, my personal best custom is likely the Seraphim Cat http://bang-doll-ssi.deviantart.com/gallery/28391507#/d38tylw because of its added posing ability and body alterations. But even then, it very obviously has parts from the Master Gundam for the wings, and one of the Sandrock's swords as the blade. Probably the best custom I did without using obvious parts was the Killer Dome converted to the gun platform http://bang-doll-ssi.deviantart.com/gallery/28391507#/d38s0eaMore Like This

Dreamcatchers?I normally don't have nightmares, they are insanely rare for me. I just had the worst one I can remember in a long time. So I decided to sit up and work on school stuff for a while. Then, my bear dreamcatcher breaks randomly and suddenly and it's not really repairable without re-stringing the whole thing. I have an eagle catcher and a bull catcher. The fact that the bear (an animal strongly associated with dreams) broke after the worst dream in years makes me wonder if I need to pay attention to something.More Like This
I don't want to go into the specifics of the dream, as I know some people are sensitive. I'll basically say that someone entered my house and tried to murder me. It had me very scared and was a two part thing. Also, in general, my dreams have always been insanely vivid. They are in color, and I can feel, smell, hear, taste and all kinds of things. I could feel all the pain of fighting and screaming. Even sitting here I can remember everything pretty clear. I know nightmares tend to s
