Free adviceSomeone recently asked me for some advice about going to art college and becoming an illustrator. Here's what I said. Maybe someone here will find this interesting too...
1) It's a tough life as an artist. You need more than just good drawing abilities to get by. I know a lot of people who are WAY better than me but can't make it as artists. You need to be personable and likable. Work on your people skills and be sincere. People can tell when it's fake.
2) Learn a broad range of skills. Don't just focus on illustration, but also learn the fundamentals of design, sculpture, painting, storyboarding, etc... those skill will help you more than you can possibly imagine.
3) Be yourself. Find your own style and really refine it.
4) Don't waste your education. Don't go out and party and drink when you should be studying and doing homework. They give you that homework for a reason!
5) Always try to be the best. Challenge yourself to make your assignments the best in your class. Always try to be

NEW CAR GETAfter selling the Gutless Wonder to a coworker who can actually afford to fix it, we took the husbando's walmart 401K that we've been holding on to for months and invested in a nice silver 06 Dodge Stratus 4-cylinder that we (I) named Trinity. Paid in full. Read: NO CAR PAYMENT. And the dealer was actually NOT a bag of dicks. He drove the car home to his place after we bought it to make sure nothing would go wrong, and ended up replacing the radio and putting the carpet back in the trunk. It's got mostly new engine parts, and a whole new front suspension. Interior is in excellent condition too.More Like This

It's a fun place to put your games with some great support for showing high score and trophies and the like.
Unfortunately BBT was made with blender 2.49b which used an older version of python, so I can't set up the high scores table for that, but hopefully in the future I'll have another Battletech themed game which will have high scores and all that stuff.

The Magic of saying No. I remember asking people about how it was to work as a freelance artist. I did often, way too often, desperately trying to gather information about it before making the jump, leaving my studio job in an attempt to improve my life. It was dire, they said. Overworking oneself was the norm, and accepting all gigs was assumed since, you know, work might come in irregularly and some months you might have nothing to do, forced to live off your savings. Plus out there, the world was hard, a jungle full of wolves, cannibals, zombies...More Like This
That's what they said. And I believed it, for a while.
Then I said NO to a commission, and the universe didn't implode. It was for moral reasons, actually: it was decently paid and in some way could have been motivating and, hell, I needed the money, but my guts spoke the truth, and you can't ignore your guts. I felt stupid at first, but soon I realized I did the right thing, and that feeling was absolutely worth it.

What finally did it was a combination of having my being employed there used as leverage against me when I refused to comply with the management staff completely disregarding the terms under which I was hired, and watching the fucking sous chef treat working event like it was her own personal fashion show. Excuse me but no. Being on a working line in 110 degree heat with six other people shoved into a space the size of a shoe (the line at this place is only 5x10') with bartenders running back and forth an flies everywhere because the owner decided that, even without fly fans or bug zappers, the giant tilt windows needed to be open...is not the place for hooker lipstick and FALSE EYELASHES which tend to FALL THE FUCK OFF OF YOUR FACE WHEN YOU SWEAT.

Basically, there are three co-owners: one handles the kitchen, one does shipping, and one does all the web design and website stuff. Well, the chef turned out to be a raging misogynist. To the point where a few of my coworkers were assaulted and not only was nothing done about it, but the chef stepped in and told HR that the man responsible was 'Not going to be fired'. After that, and hearing him say that he likes his women 'lightly battered', I decided to start looking around at what other options were available to me. I wasn't actually looking into a job immediately, just sniffing around.
Well, the HR lady set me up to talk to a chef at a private hospital (who hasn't responded to me yet) and the owner who handles shipping pulled me aside to ask what was up. I explained what had been going on, and made it absolutely clear that I had nothing lined up yet, I was just looking to broaden my horizons and eventually move on. Nothing d

Notes on Character Design
I received the question pictured below at my tumblr blog. In case it's useful to anyone here, I decided to go ahead and use this otherwise dormant journal to share the article I put together in response.
Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way,

So. Your friendly neighborhood Auntie Toerning is going to step in for a second here. Firstly, I think it's very groovy and awesome that DA is establishing their own marketplace. It's a scary world out there of work for hire and it's totally awesome that DA artists now have this stepping stool to practice professional habits in the same way that we practice artistic skills!
I would like to take a moment to discuss the rates here. I was just exploring quickly, and saw on the navigation on the left "price," and, like every other human on the planet, clicked on the most expensive first, thinking to myself "wow, good for DA to promote work that costs $1,000!" and wanting to see what that work would be.
Well. Boy was I wrong. In fact the prices are organized by Points. Remember when you were a kid, and the dog peed on the Monopoly box, and so you drew dollar signs on
DON'T GO TO ART SCHOOL- By Noah BradleyDon't go to art schoolMore Like This
The traditional approach is failing us. It's time for a change.
I'VE HAD IT.
I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won't do it. Unless you're given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money.
I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. I'm not some flaky, disgruntled art graduate, either. I have a quite successful career, thankyouverymuch.
But I am saddened and ashamed at art schools and their blatant exploitation of students. Graduates are woefully ill-prepared for the realities of being professional artists and racked with obscene amounts of debt. By their own estimation, the cost of a four year education at RISD is $245,816. As way

Will You Draw My Comic? Art Requests : A GuideHey guys, I really super didn't want to have to write a journal entry like this, but Jump USA or something must have a contest going because in the last two weeks I've had six requests to do a comic together with people I don't know. This year alone I've had twenty requests to do comics, and only about two of those requests have been legitimate commissions. The rest have been people asking if I would draw their comic for them, and I never hear back from them once I give them my commission rates. Considering I am pretty cheap, my guess is people are expecting me to do a full two months of work for next to nothing.More Like This
No ill will toward these folks, but I am a professional and I have to admit that I'm getting a little tired of getting asked to do freebies. My guess is people who have never worked with a professional artist before don't know how to go about contacting artists and don't realize what artists charge or expect when people go out of their way to contact them. Every hair on the flannel moth larva is filled with venom. This particular caterpillar will only cause irritation, but others like it can be much, much worse. While some of them look like the works of Giger, most are fuzzy, beautiful, and quite tempting to pet. My advice: don't. Here are some particularly nasty examples, and the symptoms they cause.
Bag shelter caterpillar: death by hemorrhaging
Saddleback: rash and swelling

I have decided that my problem is I spend a long time trying to work out how to do something new to a level that I'm happy with - often getting frustrated with it and starting something else and then going back to it and then giving up again over a period of weeks or months - and then when I actually finish it instead of using my new skills to make more stuff I just start the whole process again with something new...
In short I'm a bit of a dick, but one day I will finish everything I started and post it all and it will be glorious...
But as things have been going better I have been doing a better job of gradually catching up on my watches and I have really cut down on posting drunken bollocks apart from on my birthday!

Customs...I used to build custom Zoids years ago, but eventually got out of it. This was mainly because it was too time-consuming to do a good custom without having some parts very obviously being donated from something else (usually a Gundam kit). For example, my personal best custom is likely the Seraphim Cat http://bang-doll-ssi.deviantart.com/gallery/28391507#/d38tylw because of its added posing ability and body alterations. But even then, it very obviously has parts from the Master Gundam for the wings, and one of the Sandrock's swords as the blade. Probably the best custom I did without using obvious parts was the Killer Dome converted to the gun platform http://bang-doll-ssi.deviantart.com/gallery/28391507#/d38s0eaMore Like This
