Have You Met Zee Captain?

Wed Sep 19, 2012, 9:16 PM by techgnotic:icontechgnotic:

:icontechgnotic:

Sep 19, 2012 by techgnotic

The chaptered comic strip, has been collected into a 100-page graphic novel – and to the still-uninitiated:

It is not quite like anything you’ve probably ever seen before. The story follows “Zee Captain” and his sidekicks as they amble through a post-apocalyptic landscape. And while that hardly seems new and different, it’s the unusually superlative graphic quality of the comic cells and the Monty Pythonesque dialogues and leaps of logic that can become quite mesmerizing. Zee Captain, his face hidden by a gas mask that gives him a Darth Vaderish look, wears what looks like a Soviet Red Army uniform from WWII, and the strip does have nourish WWII feel. It’s as if the nuclear holocaust on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had never ended and spread to every major city on Earth. But how did author/artist Vitaly S. Alexius achieve the unique look of this strip? Fortunately for deviants, there are helpful tutorials on his profile page.

Alexiuss’s “cinematic comics” begin with backgrounds chosen from his own vast personal collection of landscape and architectural photographs which he accrued from his years working as a freelance commercial photographer. A layered matte background is achieved from several photo sources. The storyboarding comes next, whether drawn by alexiuss himself on napkins at the local diner or under more professional conditions by an assistant. Then Vitaly and his main cohorts don costumes to become the characters of Romantically Apocalyptic and there is a greenscreen shoot with Zee Captain and others in the proper poses to be inserted against the existing matte backgrounds. The final matte “painting” creates the look of cinema cells from a most amazing movie.

Beyond Romantically Apocalyptic, alexiuss’ profile page is a genuine wonderland, featuring his unique humor in several series of comics as well as contests of his own creation. He is currently soliciting donations for a points pool from which he intends to buy deviantART subscriptions for deserving artists, donate to deserving groups and create more engaging contests

Zee Captain demands your attention be turned to getting on board this wild ride that is the Alexiuss arts juggernaut. And Zee Captain generally gets what he wants.

An interview with

techgnotic:

Your “cinematic comic” Romantically Apocalyptic has become a worldwide phenomenon. Besides its being so unique, original and just so damn good, is there some sociological reason that you think might be driving its popularity at this point in time?

alexiuss:

Possibly it is love for post-apocalyptic genre that drives the appreciation for the comic.

techgnotic:

While you mastermind Romantically Apocalyptic , you have several collaborators, (some are deviantART members), who do storyboards, serve as actor/models, etc. What keeps them working on Zee Captain?

alexiuss:

The same thing that keeps me working on Zee Captain - I love to create post-apocalyptic things and I love to share the said art with the world.

techgnotic:

The captain is now on Facebook and Twitter. Can you speculate on the future of story narratives, in light of their increasingly serving multiple platforms in reaching their audience? Do you find this to be a pain – or a challenge?

alexiuss:

Facebook and twitter captain provide the audience more interaction with the characters, which is lots of fun for both the creator and the audience and also they remind comic readers about release of new episodes for them to enjoy.

techgnotic:

The sheer volume of hours you work to create each Romantically Apocalyptic episode’s panels, which includes storyboarding, greenscreen photography with live actors, and photoshop brushwork, would seem to be too massive an effort to expend on such a surreal, even “whimsical” narrative. Surely there is a message of some weight intended as we follow the semi-rational captain through the post-apoc wasteland? Do you want your fans to seriously ponder the abyss after having had their chuckle?

alexiuss:

Yes. The fans must ponder the doom which the capitalist single-use machine is producing by slowly chipping away at the environment.

techgnotic:

Do you still have time for your “straight” photography and non-Romantically Apocalyptic digital works, or has the captain commandeered your life wholly?

alexiuss:

No time whatsoever, nor the studio for it. I've closed down my photography studio for the time being, as I am not even home half the time due to constant convention travels around the world. Most likely, this January I will be opening a large warehouse to shoot photography and the Romantically Apocalyptic live action series in.

techgnotic:

Does the Romantically Apocalyptic story take place after the December 21, 2012 apocalypse? And if you and your team are still functional post-12/21/12, will Romantically Apocalyptic continue to be produced (more as a documentary than sci-fi, of course)?

alexiuss:

Putting such dates on apocalypse is silly. The Romantically Apocalyptic story is taking place way after our lifetime, when the biosphere has been fully consumed, when all rivers have evaporated, all trees have died out, when all cities have run out of resources and the air has become too full of chemicals and too poisonous for humans to inhale without a mask.

Hi there guys! I spent the last week in Tlaquepaque/Guadalajara, in Mexico, as guest to a convention there (COMAGON) it was a really fun time and I meet a lot of people (thanks Adrian, Alfonso and Eder!). One of the questions I got, was if I did an image based in La Malinche ...and Indeed I done this image long time ago, when I was spending time in the hospital, near 2009, so, as was promised, there goes! :) I hope you like it!

MENSAJE EN ESPAÑOL!
Muchas gracias a todos los amigos que me visitaron en la Comagon, muchas gracias por su simpatia y buena onda. Definitivamente con ganas de volver algun dia :)

LET`s WIKIATTACK!!

La Malinche (also known as Malinali or Malintzin) was born in 1496, in a then "frontier" region between the Aztec Empire and the Maya states of the Yucatán Peninsula). She was named "Malinalli" after the Goddess of Grass, and later "Tenepal" meaning "one who speaks with liveliness." In her youth, her father died and her mother remarried and bore a son. Now an inconvenient stepchild, the girl was sold or given to Maya slave-traders from Xicalango, an important commercial town further south and east along and hard the coast. Bernal Díaz del Castillo claims Malinalli's family faked her death by telling the townspeople that a recently deceased child of a slave was Malinalli.

Malinalli was introduced to the Spanish in April 1519, when she was among twenty slave women given by the Chontal Maya of Potonchan (in the present-day state of Tabasco) after the Spaniards defeated them in battle. Her age at the time is unknown; however, assumptions have been made that she was in her late teens or early twenties. Bernal Díaz del Castillo remarked on her beauty and graciousness; she was the only one of the slaves whose name he remembered. (He called her "Marina," the Christian name she took upon being baptized in 1519.) Cortés singled her out as a gift for Alonzo Hernando Puertocarrero, perhaps the most well-born member of the expedition. Soon, however, Puertocarrero was on his way to Spain as Cortés' emissary to Charles V, and Cortés kept her by his side for her value as an interpreter who spoke two native languages—Mayan and Nahuatl.

According to Díaz, she spoke to emissaries from Moctezuma in their native tongue Nahuatl and pointed to Cortés as the chief Spaniard to speak for them. Cortés had located a Spanish priest, Gerónimo de Aguilar, who had spent several years in captivity among the Maya peoples in Yucatán following a shipwreck. Thus, he had learned some Mayan, but he did not speak Nahuatl. Cortés used Marina (her Christian name) for translating between the Nahuatl language (the common language of central Mexico of that time) and the Chontal Maya language. Then Aguilar could interpret from Mayan to Spanish, until Marina learned Spanish and could be the sole interpreter. She accompanied him so closely that Aztec codices always show her picture drawn alongside of Cortés. The natives of Tlaxcala, who formed an alliance with Cortés against Moctezuma, called both Marina and Cortés by the same name: Malintzin. (The -tzin suffix was the Nahuatl equivalent of "sir" or "lady" bestowed on them by the Tlaxcalans.)

According to surviving records, Marina learned of a plan by natives of Cholula to cooperate with the Aztecs to destroy the small Spanish army. She alerted Cortés to the danger and even pretended to be cooperating with her native informants while Cortés foiled their plot to trap his men. Cortés turned the tables on them and instead, slaughtered many Cholulans.

Following the fall of Tenochtitlán in late 1521 and the birth of her son Don Martín Cortés in 1522, Marina stayed in a house Cortés built for her in the town of Coyoacán, 8 miles south of Tenochtitlán, while it was being rebuilt as Mexico City. Cortés took Marina to quash a rebellion in Honduras in 1524–26 when she is seen serving again as interpreter (suggestive of a knowledge of Maya dialects beyond Chontal and Yucatán.) While in the mountain town of Orizaba in central Mexico, she married Juan Jaramillo, a Spanish hidalgo. Historians such as Prescott generally lost track of Marina after her journey to Central America. More contemporary scholars have determined that she died less than a decade after the conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlan at some point in 1529. Historian Sir Hugh Thomas in his book "Conquest" reports the probable date of her death as 1551, deduced from letters he discovered in Spain alluding to her as alive in 1550 and deceased after 1551. She was survived by her son don Martín, who would be raised primarily by his father's family, and a daughter doña María who would be raised by Jaramillo and his second wife doña Beatriz de Andrada.

For the conquistadores, having a reliable interpreter was important enough, but there is evidence that Malinche's role and influence were larger still. Bernal Díaz del Castillo, a soldier who, as an old man, produced the most comprehensive of the eye-witness accounts, the Historia Verdadera de la Conquista de la Nueva España ("True Story of the Conquest of New Spain"), speaks repeatedly and reverentially of the "great lady" Doña Marina (always using the honorific title, "Doña"). "Without the help of Doña Marina," he writes, "we would not have understood the language of New Spain and Mexico." Rodríguez de Ocana, another conquistador, relates Cortés' assertion that after God, Marina was the main reason for his success.

The evidence from indigenous sources is even more interesting, both in the commentaries about her role, and in her prominence in the drawings made of conquest events. In the Lienzo de Tlaxcala (History of Tlaxcala), for example, not only is Cortés rarely portrayed without Malinche poised by his ear, but she is shown at times on her own, seemingly directing events as an independent authority. If she had been trained for court life, as in Díaz's account, her loyalty to Cortés may have been dictated by the familiar pattern of marriage among native elite classes. In the role of primary wife acquired through an alliance, her role would have been to assist her husband achieve his military and diplomatic objectives.

The historical figure of Marina has been intermixed with Aztec legends (such as La Llorona, a woman who weeps for lost children). Her reputation has been altered over the years according to changing social and political perspectives, especially after the Mexican Revolution, when she was portrayed in dramas, novels, and paintings as an evil or scheming temptress. In Mexico today, La Malinche remains iconically potent. She is understood in various and often conflicting aspects, as the embodiment of treachery, the quintessential victim, or simply as symbolic mother of the new Mexican people. The term malinchista refers to a disloyal Mexican.

Another fast drawing. The title should have been cretaceous abduction, but jurassic is more endearing for me in this moment. I did this because i'm reading jurassic park of Michael Crichton and I'm quite obsessed but i wanted to give it a different sci-fi-like And I also did it for more practice and try new techniques. I Hope you comment and enjoy it

Rocksteady's buddy Bebop, this is a redesign to complete the pair. I opted for an older more mature person to be mutated into bebop, hes a veitnam veteran so in these years his age has been catching up with him...so thats why he volunteered to be mutated...battling mutated turtles was just a side effect of that.

This was sketched up and designed on some printer paper while I sat at work, then colored in PS.

I still have the character sheets and other info about to upload, but I'll do that later.

101st Airborne re-enactors take a cruise a working LCVP.

If you're ever in Carentan, France and if it's out for it's little educational rides, do visit Challenge LCVP's PA20-4. Its a full restored World War II Higgins Boat, like the 1,100 that landed troops on D-Day on the nearby coast. (Carentan itself was liberated by the 101st Airborne) She was found as a wreck in an English river and combined with another broken Higgins Boat, it was rebuilt and restored to it's wartime appearance. One of the boat's histories is unknown, but the other is known to have landed Allied troops in North Africa. She was given the designation PA 30-4 in honor of a Higgins Boat that served on D-Day and landed troops on Omaha Beach.

The tour itself is just a little 30 minute trip up and down the canal, but as you do so, one of the volunteers tells the story of the Hggins Boats in French. I don't know French but it was great just riding on it, feeling the rumble of its engine and imagining what this what have felt like coming in under fire. It's mostly made of marine plywood except for that big bow ramp in the front. It sounds bad, but it beats the alternative of troops dropping off the sides and into the water.

Upon arrival his mission was to clear the moon of any alien life to make future moon landings easy and safe. He lived on the moon for 26 years hunting and slaying aliens until NASA lost communication....his death has still not been confirmed however and many believe hes still murdering aliens today.
