This image was originally a simple sketch on paper. The idea to do a complete color project came later. The inspiration came from Lord of the Ring and everything around that.

I did a concept sketch and painted in Photoshop over it. I used few references of castles and cathedrals to give me some ideas. I did a 3d modeling of a castle to help me with perspective and lighting. This image background scenery was one of my first exploration related to matte painting and matte art and all CG environment world done in 2002.

So heres A giant piece I Just created over the last month. I can’t recall the amount of hrs I put in. It was created entirely in photoshop. Its a splash page for an upcoming game called Fatecraft, The Therian Saga. I’ll provide more info when its available.

The brief was just to create a massive scene that featured multiple terrains, and people performing various tasks like, building, hunting, trading etc.. It was to be set in a medieval time frame with a subtle fantasy feel.

I was excited and overwhelmed but it was a very satisfying job to complete. The layout was established quickly for approval then I set forth to gather reference material. This mostly consisted of medieval miniatures.

A little sketch, inspired by this autumn.

I believe, I have some sort of virus on my computer, that makes DA look like this most of time: [link] :paranoid:
Therefore I can't read notes or see deviations.
Sometimes it works, though...

This started out as a quick Zbrush test for sculpting rock that I decided to turn into a matte painting. It was inspired by The Hobbit, Pacific Rim and the work from Blizzard cinematics. For a while I thought it needed more detail/elements in the focal area, but I like how mysterious and simple it is here. Makes you wonder who is up there.

Concept drawing for character development class. I initially designed the eight-headed-serpent from the Japanese Mythology and created this as the entrance gate to giant serpent's lair. The concept was that this place was once thrived with human culture but after poisoned by Orochi's evil the land has become lifeless. Pencil sketch, 11*14

Here is a concept that I started one month ago and that is finished at least. It is very inspired by African architectures, and it belongs to a personal project: Karuba. Here is the step by step: [link]
***

Long time ago since my last personal matte painting, this one based on Robert Stromberg's concepts and work ( Planet Bajor ), I decided to take some of his elements and build a city around those designs.

I will be posting some making of here on my facebook page :

Hi there,
sorry, for the loooong break here on DA. I managed to restore an artwork that I presented with Meduzarts at the Adapt Montreal in 2008.
I had it laying around since then and recently decided to brush it up a bit.
It's a matte painting based on a 3d render, where I used CyGen to generate the destroyed buildings.
I got tons of help from Julien Chabot, who I'm happy to credit here for his awesome talent!
I thought the subject fits at the moment as the whole world is watching what's going to happen next in Northern Korea :-
Lets hope for all of us that those kind of images remain in the fantasy category ...

software used: cygen (custom built plugin), Maya, Mental Ray and Photoshop.
Let me know what you think,
cheers,
-dan

2014 EDIT: Refined some things for a new PRINT, which you can get HERE - www.inprnt.com/gallery/jjcanva…

__________

Aloha!
Here's a new piece, showing a girl starting a journey through an old valley. Definitely got some inspiration from LOTR :)
Decided to upload it on a higher res so that you can get a better feeling for the scale, which I wanted to be pretty epic!

I really hope you like it! :)
Tell me what you think!

P.S. - I don't usually complain but I hate the fact that DA has an almost white background, which kinda messes with the values of the artwork...and now it has this stupid Holiday "free shipping" ad that is almost on top of our pieces! Pictures should never be viewed in this conditions :(
