"There But For The Grace Of God"

Inspired by a beautiful shot from the episode "Twin Destinies" of the sci-fi drama "Stargate Universe", this picture shows the Destiny approaching it's heavy damaged twin.
The title is from Lt. Scott's line as he sees the wreck of the Destiny and is actually a reference to the frist part of the season 1 finale of "Stargate SG-1".

The picture took me about 5-6 Hours.
Heard mostly the piece: "Sunshine (Adagio In D Minor) from the soundtrack of the movie "Sunshine".
All done in Photoshop CS4.

I hope you enjoy it, and feel free to comment^^

Hit download for a bigger view.

This chunky looking thing was originally dubbed the "Bunker" and was also originally a smaller class of ship but having since dropped its class from the game we decided to resurrect the design for use as a larger Capital ship.
The ship is very heavily armoured and is meant as a closer quarters support vessel, it has tons of point defences and abilities that uses agro to force enemy ships to engage it rather than other ships in the fleet, its a tank and can take a lot of punishment. Its weapon systems aren't very powerful and mostly consist of point defences to counter fighters and bombers.
It primary function is to act as a buffer between the enemies fleet and your own soaking up vast amounts of damage that would otherwise cripple lesser ships

Also here is the latest alpha gameplay footage form the game where you can see another Capital ship (the Basilisk) being used, the model is old and is currently undergoing a re-modelling. [link]

Do first contact situation ever go peacefully? Of course they don't because that would be boring.
Anyway what your looking at is a first contact situation between the Humans and the first alien race to go into the game Novus Aeterno the Verunas. I have shown some of their ship designs recently and this is the first full illustration with them in so it was nice to paint something other than Human V Human.

The Verunas aren't very friendly they are the most advanced race in the game and they know it, they are big headed both physically and mentally.

Also this painting will cover a 20ft wall at out booth at PAX in April which will be rather cool to see.

Enjoy

This is the final concept for the Verunas Fortress Class Capital Ship a huge monster of a vessel and one you won't want to run into with anything smaller than an entire fleet.
In the game Novus Aeterno the Verunas are one of the most advanced species and their ships are very tough to kill.
I think these are my favourite species in the game and I had a great time designing their ships.

So recently we have made a big shift in the development of ships and as a result I've not got much to do for a few days at least so I took the opportunity to work on one of the games other races, the Verunas, a rather big and viscous looking race and their ships needed to show this as well as showing the sense that they are rock hard.
Working with Rodrigo (the games creative director) we came up with the above style for their ships as well as a detailed breakdown of their design philosophy which I am rather happy with, Rodrigo's main concept was to make them shark like as well as based on several other nasty sea creatures but keeping the very angular and geometric style of their ships.

We have had issues recently with portraying ship scale without having another ship next to it to show how big, or small, it is so this was a chance for me to mess around with some ideas I had to show scale of ships and I think I managed it. Anyway read it and learn for yourself, a lot of attention and love went into these designs, probably my favourite ship style I've done.

I haven't made a single classic space scene in 2011, even though I have my roots in space art. So here you go. ;-) The main motivation for this work was to practice angles and perspective and it took a lot longer than expected.

To complete this image I made use of several different techniques: While the station in the foreground is mainly painted with addition of a few textures ([link] and cgtextures.com), the resource for the people in it is stock photography ([link] [link] [link]). To render the planet and the spaceship the 3D functions of Photoshop came in handy. The ship model in the mid-planes is based on one of ~dmaland's renders ([link]) and edited with the usual addition of textures and effects. Thanks a lot!

So here it is a digital painting I did during last spring for a Yang Pulse's book which is still to be finished (but I can't wait to read it! :)). It took me ages to finish this as I had never painted spaceships before and because I had to achieve an incredible amount of detail. I feel kind of proud so I hope you guys like it! :aww:

Everything is designed and painted by me except for the clouds which are kind of matte painting.

It's been a while since I did not make a matte sci-fi scene and here is "The Terminal".
This one is fully inspired by a French artist I discovered in the following book in french (sorry...): [link]
It's Paul Chadeisson I should credit him for the composition and the brushes he kindly shared, check out his website: [link]
Have a look at his gallery, it's really good.

Nevertheless, everything has been fully made by myself, no like for like elements. I added many things, details and textures.

Here are the stocks I used, mostly for the left part of the plant:

Hi.
Bye.

he USG Ishimura "Planet Cracker" ship, during the process of mining the planet of Aegis VII, sends out a distress signal to the Concordance Extraction Corporation (CEC). The CEC dispatches the USG Kellion to investigate. As the Kellion attempts to dock with the Ishimura, a malfunction occurs and the Kellion is badly damaged, and the crew begins to seek a means of return. As the crew explores the apparently abandoned Ishimura, they are attacked by Necromorphs, killing off all but Clarke, Hammond, and Daniels. Hammond recognizes that many of the Ishimura's systems are failing, threatening the ship due to a nearby asteroid belt, and sends Clarke around the ship to fix the core systems to keep them alive.

A collab with keepwalking07 and myself.
I asked keepwalking07 for a collab, because I was already watching for a long time and he improved lateley alot, so keepwalking07 came up with a awesone WIP that I could work on, He said, Don't care how long you over it, So I took me a month :P, first it was red/orange, but after some tweaks I got this color and also came with the idea of dead space, I had that idea for ages, but never had the time to do it, so we did it both together.

A pair of explorers look out to the flying cities of Ordalla - an advanced civilization. The Ordallan Homeworld.

Matte painting/spacescape several weeks in the making. Finally finished. I originally made this for Troy CLE's "Marvelous World" [link] however he thought the landscape did not fit his story(but he still thought it was cool). I am glad he rejected it, because I could then do anything I wanted with it, and this is what has resulted.

Used many stock images from istockphoto, stockxpert, and others. I've even recycled my terragen renders from previous artworks including "arctic sweep"(the base landscape), "First TG2", and "Summer Calling" into this. Works quite well.

Images used: [link]

I had a lot of fun with the nebula using photos of marble tile. I might put up a tutorial in the future.

Enjoy it folks, I'm now going to go back to working on the "Swift Project" (read journal for details)

inspired by the song Lost In Space

Another star
has fallen without a sound
Another spark
has burned out in the cold

Another door
to barrens standing open

And who is there
to tell me not to give and not to go

How could I know?, how could I know?
That I'll get lost in space to roam forever

How could I know?, how could I see?
feeling like lost in space to roam forever

I'm crawling down
The doorway to the badlands
And kicking down

Are you heard: it's to the black
and all the damage
fading in the oblivion mirror
When the demons
are calling me, their dragging me away

How could I know?, how could I know?
That I'll get lost in space to roam forever

How could I know?, how could I see?
feeling like lost in space to roam forever

Lost in space
lost in time
Lost in space
Lost in Time
Lost in Space

How could I know, how could i know
How could I know, How could I know
That I'll get lost in space to roam for ever

How could I now, how could I see
feeling like lost in space to roam forever

Forever...

This giant flying cannon is called the Basilisk, its a Human Capital ship from the game Novus Aeterno. The Basilisk is a long range heavy weapons platform, its slow as hell but has thick armour and can only shoot forwards using either its giant main cannon which spans the length of the ship, you can actually see the ammo chambers that stick out of the sides at the back of the ship, or using its 3 smaller cannons.

My recent task working on the MMORTS game Novus Aeterno, along with the rest of the art team, was to make space less boring. In reality its very empty and black so we have been working on some ideas to make it feel more dynamic and interesting the first of these concepts is already in my gallery called "Solar Winds" this 2 image sheet is one of many.

The first image is one concept for a large space storm, they look similar to a double layered super cell only much larger and can span large distances as walls. They can be dangerous to ships passing through them due top frequent violent plasma discharges.
The second is a more nutty idea cooked up by our Creative Director, its called a Storm Core and it bursts into life starting small and gradually increases in size and power as shown above, it will wreak havoc in a system causing all sorts of nasty issues and limiting travel in a system until it dissipates or moves on.

Now this one I was painting whilst being recorded by some freeware screen recorder called Camstudio. I tested it before hand but upon completion of this painting I stopped the recording to watch it and it was corrupt. Apparently it's buggy as hell so don't expect any vids from me soon until I find some new capture software. Sorry folks.
Again inspired by the forerunners from halo.

This one took around an hour and a half :ahoy:

The requested concept was the earth in a state of emergency, the surface on one side is always facing the sun as its rotation has stopped and it gets very got. The atmosphere is escaping at the poles causing aurora and other nasty things to happen, also the moon exploded.

If you haven't yet noticed. I love red giants :)

Started working on this a long time ago. Never got around to finishing it so I thought I'd pull it out and get it done. (Thats what she said) I'm not entirely sure whats supposed to be happening here. I just think it looks cool. About 8-9 hours in this one, its a little sketchy but I think its alright.

No photos, no textures, no fractals. I shouldn't need to keep saying this. All painted in Photoshop.
