Join a SOPA and PIPA debate What are SOPA and PIPA?
The United States Congress is proposing two laws that address the problem of wide-scale unlicensed distribution on the Internet of motion pictures, songs, trademarked goods, and patented pharmaceuticals.
One of the proposals is called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and would direct search engines in the United States to block Internet sites outside the United States that are primarily engaged in distributing unlicensed content.Another proposal called PIPA (Protect IP Act) would block websites located in the United States as well. The Obama administration is putting a stop to these proposals. It wants the Internet companies and the content companies to get together and come up with more functional and less destructive solutions.

The current trend of these spammers is to favourite an image of yours and then when you reply on their page you get a message along the lines of "I really liked your work. We have been blacklisting these websites and banning all the spammers we can find.

I have to Rant for a moment.Seriously. Why can people not use their own creativity? WHY must people strive to be cattle?!More Like This
Artists are a breed of their own. We do not conform. We do not follow. We lead. We strive for greatness. We work towards that ONE masterpiece.
So.. why am I finding this image with comments disabled? I am finding it because this person does not want to stand on their own two feet. They want, WANT, to be the cow in the herd. And they don't want to be called out. Well, I am calling you out. ART is not putting an artistic filter on an already taken photo (that was not taken by you) and then hitting it with a motion blur. ART is using your own mind, your own creativity, your own PASSION.
So what if it's a contest.. sure there's plenty to win. If I were to enter this contest, I wouldn't even want what there is to win. I would be more focused on sharing my art with the people that will be receiving it. Art is about showing the world, not what you are getting from it.

The question is: is this allowed?
To answer that question, it is important to understand what rules apply and what intellectual property (IP) is.
There are three different kinds of IP that can apply here:
As the name hints this is the right to make copies of a work. It does not protect ideas, only the actual recorded work - artwork, documents, music etc.
This means that if someone copies your art (by directly copying it, by tracing it or otherwise adapting your work) you can certainly take action, but there is little you can do to prevent someone else creating their own

So, a few months ago I asked you all to tell me what you thought about your art. There were a few people who were happy about their art, but the overwhelming majority felt a sense of disappointment, frustration, upset. They were unhappy with their work.
That's a hard thing to feel, to be unhappy with the thing that you do out of love. I've felt that before so I know how crushing it can be and how hard it can be to pick yourself up and continue trying. One thing I noticed, when I feel that way, is that it's often born out of a lack of direction, and a lack of understanding of what I've done right in the past. It's so easy to see all the wrong choices you've made, we're practically hardwired to go 'oh god that was so awful'. The problem is, how can your artistic career (be it writing or drawing) grow into a beautiful tree, if you don't have faith in the roots that support it?

Movie Review: FrozenThoughts after watching Frozen...More Like This
You know, I've had friends who are up and down across the board on this movie. Some love it, some hate it. I've read the reviews with people raging because of the homosexual agenda they see in it, to people upset about how it characterizes a specific culture in their characters.
I don't have a whole lot to say on those issues, in all honesty, because I didn't get any of those issues out of this movie (not to say people can't be upset about what they got from the movie. Absolutely, I just personally didn't get any of that from it, so I'm not going to defend or fight against any of that). I'll try to avoid spoilers but no promises.
I believe you take what you bring into a movie. That's how it is with any art form really, and for me I bring into this movie a world of mental illness and struggling to deal with hiding from people, being terrified of others. It hit pretty painfully home to me, the entire sequence of hiding away, bottling up emotions. Don't f

Sharing art from artists you like.I thought I'd talk a little about this, after reading a few people who were genuinely distressed and upset that their desire to share something they find beautiful was met with hostility from the artist. But the way this work was shared was... saving the artwork and then uploading it to their deviantart gallery/websites and they didn't understand WHY the artist was upset. I find it amazing when a word comes up multiple times in one day from different people but referring to similar things. I was by myself and had no way to get up, call for help (my phone is dead) or anything. So I just curled up in a ball and clung to Zeus and hopped my heart didn't explode. I also understand that Atheism is a scary thing. When the world goes to shit, and everyone says 'keep the faith' or 'pray and you shall receive' or 'I'll pray for you'... it makes things worse in some ways because *you don't have that option*. Ha ha ha, best headline ever.
Good, you opened this journal. Don't worry, no art theft shenanigans have transpired that triggered this entry. I merely want to share my thoughts on "ripping off" and "originality" with you, both as an artist and novelist who's been on the Internet for 12 years.
This is not a rant - it's strictly comical, but also educational. I'm known for my laid-back, funny and matter-of-fact attitude
I'll give you a different point of view today, because if there is something I despise more than art theft, it's people accusing others of it. Anti art theft ninjas, also known as: people who have likely not had enough science in school. They often have no compelling evidence. They often have wrong evidence (even worse). They often do it on a whim, a feeling. And they rarely do it silently, rampaging publicly instead, thus driving a witch hunt.

The Serenely Powerful Art of `yuumei
In the top half of an hourglass, a polar bear and her cub perch perilously atop a wedge of melting ice, its dripping water becoming the "sand" that is inexorably drowning an urban couch potato figure in the hourglass's bottom chamber. The beautiful yet arresting digital painting is "Countdown" by yuumei and it is currently one of the most popular pieces on deviantART. It is "archetypal yuumei" in its perfectly balanced blending of a striking lyrically beautiful visual with an underlying urgent social or political message.
Her specialty is digital art in an anime style, but she often employs traditional watercolors and other elements. Her cause is saving and preserving what's left of the Earth's wildlife and its environment; she donates large portions of profits from her artworks to a host of wildlife and environmental organizations and urges all deviants and others to do the same. But what has really been her stand-out achievem

Deviant and Art MentionsMentions: Connecting PeopleMore Like This
Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.
Links to pages on deviantART can quickly be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART.
Deviants you mention are notified in the new Mentions section of the Message Center, making engaging and involving others in conversation a simple, hassle-free experience.
How to Mention
There are four ways to mention a deviant.

The main reason we did this, was to bring a deeper meaning to our Group, as far as our love and concerns for Nature.
With special news articles after every three months, which will reflect the work submitted to these folders, we are able to help share and spread awareness about particular issues that have an impact on Nature, which we would likely care about given the original idea for this group, to begin with. That's when we pushed our way out of the crowd, and just started walking away. By now, I was scared, and kind of nauseous. People around us were screaming, and just running. Running like they stole something. Little kids were crying, and their mother and fathers were comforting them, "its going to be ok. You're ok." We all thought we were being attacked by terrorists.

It was awesome. I went in expecting hardcore action and kickass ladies, but I got so much more.
Yes, it has one long action scene at the start, a somewhat calm middle, and then another long action scene at the end, but somehow it manages to tell an interesting story throughout. It doesn't make any sense when I say it, it has to be seen to be understood.
The movie is surprisingly sympathetic towards its characters. They're complex and develop naturally. Even the psychotic War Boys who dream of dying violently in battle have proper backstories that make them more sympathetic, even if we can't forgive their behavior.
It's very much a "show, don't tell" movie though. They don't tell us the war boys are just misguided and ignorant little kids who have been brainwashed by Joe. They show us the war pups as they are before they become war boys, and how desperate the war boys are for Joe's attention.

This is going to be brief, so I won't be going into every single little thing you can do with this magical tool as there are billions of possibilities. However, I'll be showing you how I use it in portrait photography, most especially in order to heighten certain physical traits such as freckles!
We're going to be working with one photo during this brief tutorial, I will show you the finalized version that I posted onto DeviantArt, and I will then show you the steps taken in order to reach that end result. (I will only be focusing on the unsharp tool aspects, though, not the other finalizing touches I used to get my final result)
As a side note, I've recently gone through a lot of laptop problems, so my photoshop presets and whatnot are not back to normal, so I don't recommend you pay attention to them.

When a subject poses to have his or her photograph taken, the subject tries to project a message about himself or

If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,

In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.

From Fiber To Finished Object... A Journey. To begin our journey we have roving.More Like This
Roving is not the only way to get yarn, however. There are also batts, locks, top, hankies, and much more.
After you have your fiber, you need something to spin it. There are two choices. Wheels and spindles. Spindles are smaller, and much easier to make by hand.

In Support of Spirit DayLike many, I was bullied as a kid. I can't count how many times I ended up at home after school, winded from running, cheeks flushed in anger and humiliation. It wasn't fun and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I can't imagine how much worse it can be for the LGBT youth, facing so much more than the relatively innocuous taunts of "geek" and "nerd" that I dealt with.More Like This
I have children of my own, and I do everything I can to encourage them to be kind and generous, forgiving and understanding. My six-year-old, Jaidyn, has an amazing Grade 1 teacher who tells the kids that every time they say something nice to someone, they're "filling their bucket". To insult or belittle a person is to empty their bucket, taking with it the person's good feelings and confidence. I like this approach, as it gives the children a very relatable metaphor and it made it very easy to explain Spirit Day to her. Her school does a "Wear Red Friday" event every week (in support of school spirit), but she has happily agre
Feature: Little Shop of HorrorsCarrying on with the Halloween Movie theme we've watched Little Shop of Horrors. We decided to go in a musical route after the catchy song from Hocus Pocus. LIttle Shop of Horrors has so many amazing musical moments it's insane. I've not watched this movie in years and remembered every single song. Such a great experience. I only wish I could have seen it on broadway!More Like This

Tips on HOW TO BE A BETTER ARTIST.Sometimes I get a notes from you guys asking about tips to draw better. It's okay to ask if you're prepared to get respond that does not resolve all your problems ♥ Many of you ask about techniques, specific things to make your drawing work or just anatomy. I'm not at a place when I can teach you any of this. I'm still at my artistic journey and I'll be in it for the rest of my life. But I can still share with you some experience that I gained while travelling with my drawing. So here they are 8 core points to improve.More Like This
1. Don't try to find your style at first. When your hand isn't warmed up by tons of training and studies you'll only get frustrated. So just draw, regardless of style.
2. Try to understand anatomy. And when I say "try to understand" I mean fill thousands of pages with it. But only one theme at a time. It will be easier. So lets say today you'll be trying to understand an eye, second day work with ears.
SPREAD: no, DEVIANTART WON'T shut down- here's whyEDIT Aug 6th: THE RUMOR WAS OFFICIALLY DEBUNKED! THE SITE IS NOT SHUTTING DOWN!More Like This
Also, I just heard DA may not be in any kind of financial trouble to begin with. I made this in the assumption that deviantArt was trying to cover up for potential losses but that might not even be the case according to new information.
Lately there has been a lot of uproar on the risk of losing deviantArt entirely if you sign the petition against CORE.
A lot of misinformation has been spread and I need to assert them.
First off, you do not need to worry! Website-based businesses such as deviantArt do not work that way, they do not go bankrupt anywhere near as easily as other forms of business. Also, we do not aim for this. The only reason why we wish for the Core boycott is to make Deviantart listen to us. It has failed to do that for years, and we have finally had enough.
Second, we need to clear up a few things. We do not want to remove what CO
Dear deviantART...I am refusing to use the rebranded name because, I'm annoyed about the rebrand. I'm annoyed about your direction, your lack of focus in key areas and your lack of communication. I said I'd never be a bitter former staff member, but it seems that I am.More Like This
Last year you spent a lot of money on a rebrand, this year you've cut 50% of your work force, entire departments have been decimated and peoples lives have been thrown upside down without notice. But you never really communicated to anyone why. You still don't, you're not telling the community what's happening and that's only going to hurt you. People will see that helpdesk tickets take longer to get a response, people see that lots of people are no longer staff and you're not letting them know why. You know that people have a belief that the site is dying, you're only furthering it right now. How much of a better state would the site be in if the rebrand hadn't happened? Would I and the rest of the people that lost our jobs without notic

Your Point Commissions are Worth More Than That.I see this a lot. Talented digital artists will post point commission info on their profile or as a forum post, and I hardly ever see a price worth more than $2. No matter how complex the artwork they're offering.More Like This
I'm not even talking about the few super-crazy-talented digital artists with the ability to sit down with a tablet and Photoshop for 12 hours and create something that looks like it belongs in a museum.
I'm talking about deviants who posses the undervalued talent of drawing "pretty darn well". I'm talking about virtually every drawing-artist on dA that I've ever seen. Your people look like people. Your animals look like animals. You actually used decent shading. Your colors look nice together. You joined dA for a good reason!
Super popular? Very few people are. Way better than I could do? For sure! I focus on jewelry making. I can sketch and shade simple inanimate objects, and I have a pretty good eye for color theory. That's about it. If it moves or breathes, I'm hopeless at

A NOVEL WRITER'S QUESTIONNAIRE
1. Many novelists have been writing for a very long time. Tell us about the first story you remember writing – or if you have no clue, tell us about your first serious attempt at a novel. What was the end result? Did you scrap it, lock it in a trunk, or rework it into something else?
The first beginning-middle-end story that I wrote was an assignment in the third grade, approximately eight years ago. The teacher gave each kid in my grade a handful of toys (it wasn't that hard - there were only four other kids (all girls) besides me). I got a gorilla, a palm tree, a cow and a surfboard.
I don't know what I did with those but I got the highest mark on that assignment.
2. Have you always wanted to write novels, or do different lengths of stories spark your interest? Have you writ

So we're doing something new with featured artists! First of all, I've slightly changed up how I'm going to pick them. Since I want the members to actually benefit from this, I'll mostly be choosing from the people who I've seen commenting and submitting art over the time that I'm deciding who it'll be. And now, the featured artists don't just get a journal entry!
Every featured artist will be able to submit a few of their best works of art to the featured folder for everyone to see. So, this biweek's featured artists, when you see your names on here you can choose 3 or 4 of your best works to put them in that folder!
The first feature this week goes to CorenB

Fan Art Law
Mon Sep 10, 2012 by techgnotic
t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art
