Taken along the edge of the Pacific at Sunset Cliffs, San Diego, CA. I scaled down this cliff once I arrived at this location and saw what the low tide had revealed. I just love the structure of this wall and the almost mirror like composition that emerges. Next time, real shoes instead of flip flops for scaling this cliff :)

First light over the grand canyon seen from Yaki point on the south rim. The snow against the red canyon walls is mesmerizing in person and adds a great color contrast to an already incredible color palette. It was pretty cold this morning, but not like the previous visit when it was below zero. This was a nice balmy 15 degrees and had the whole point to ourselves for the sunrise.

.:: Kaleidoscopia ::..
The way my work is different from that of other photographers, is that I look at a scene differently.
As I hike through nature and look around for photographic opportunities, I envision how a scene might look when I'm done post-processing.
Where other photographers make a picture pop more and keep it as original or realistic as possible, I actually intend on post-processing, sitting hours on end at the computer in order to make a picture that stands out, pops and tickles the viewer's imagination.

Kaleidoscopia is a good example of a surreal shot that uses the natural light and colors that were present at the shoot, and making local adjustments of what I would like the viewer to really see in the end. Just like the great landscape photographers of the last century did in black and white. Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Elliot Porter all used special techniques in their day to make an area lighter or darker, adjust the contrast or tone their final images.

Those nitty gritty chemical processes are something we digital photographers can't or won't use. Our tools of the trade are photoshop, photomatix pro, nik software, ptgui, lightroom and autopano giga.

87 Shot HDR panorama at 16mm with the 550D. f/18, ISO100.

For just a moment this past summer I was blessed to be able to visit the Grand Canyon. It truly does take your breath away the first time you see it. You're not prepared for just how vast it is. One day, perhaps, I'll get to go back. Until then, I'll keep living in the moment.

Another photo from my trip to Glacier National Park last August. When you enter the park at Many Glacier, one of the first things you will see is Lake Sherburne and the mountains to the west. Grinnell Point is near the center of the frame, with the Garden Wall / Continental Divide beyond it.

The water was completely still, so my girlfriend and I stopped to photograph it. While most people stood at the roadside, pointing their camera phones toward the beautiful scene, we took the short rocky walk down to the water's edge for a better (and less crowded) vantage point.

NOTE: When displayed at its default size, the photo may appear a bit "soft". FULL VIEW is highly recommended for better appreciation of detail.

WOW!! What a perfect night for stars!!!

This was taken this morning around 3:30am in Banff, AB! I was delighted with a small meteor show. One happened to sneak into this pano! As well as some faint Aurora glow to the north!

Winter 2012

With the aim of shooting some Scottish Landscapes in dynamic weather I started my trip to Great Britain in mid-November and traveled for about 5 weeks trough the country. My journey took me from the south coast of England via Northumberland to Scotland. In Scotland I traveled from the Isle of Skye to Caithness, Torridon and Assynt. As expected the weather conditions were very contrary (snow, sun, storm, rain). The exposed position at the Atlantic Ocean is responsible for the unpredictable weather in western Scotland. Often it’s possible to experience several seasons within one day. Although it often wasn’t very easy to keep my camera dry, I was rewarded with a variety of spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

In early December winter comes to northern Scotland. Ice covered the countless lakes and the frequently showers turn into snowfall. In the last part of my UK series I show the shots from Wester Ross. The photos were taken during several hikes in the spectacular mountainous regions An Teallach and Torridon. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

As down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I,
There armed lines of marching men
In squadrons passed me by.

No pipe did hum, no battle drum
Did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus' bells o'er the Liffey swells
Rang out in the foggy dew.

The bravest fell, and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Easter-tide
In the springing of the year.

While the world did gaze with deep amaze
At those fearless men but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew...

So how about some unseen Iceland shots to announce my new workshops next year? :)

A wave, rushing back into the ocean, formed countless stripes and a focusing formation on the black beach of Jökulsárlón.
The image was shot during my first (of 2) 'Land of Ice' 2013 workshop- the glacier beach is one of its main features.

If you wish to visit and shoot these awesome locations under my dedicated guidance, please check out my upcoming 'Land of Ice' (south Iceland) and 'Winter Paradise' (northern Iceland) photography workshops next January!

Sunrise at Oregon's Succor Creek State Park. A place I frequented many times as a child on Gem and Fossil expeditions. Some of my fondest memories were running around here looking for petrified wood, thundereggs, owyhee jasper and chasing lizards. It was difficult for me returning to this place. To find what once was deserted, pristine and quiet, has now been overrun by recreationalists. Motorcycles and Quads tearing up the landscape and leaving the quiet solitude to a vivid memory of the past. Yes, people have the right to enjoy themselves but when we end up packing out 10 times more trash then we even brought in, it's repulsive and disrespectful. We couldn't drive a few hundred yards without having to stop and pick up water bottles and trash left by recreators. These places are here for all to enjoy and respect. I know damn well, if someone didn't pick up their trash they wouldn't want to return and more than likely complain about what has become of the place. Just stay in the city. Leave these places to the people that can appreciate it and respect it.

A really nice guy by the name of Matt, who I ran into on top of Glastonbury Tor. I thought this was a nice snapshot of a photographer hard at work. Hopefully he'll get in touch so I can send him this image.

UPDATE: Matt did get in contact with me about a week later and he was over the moon with this shot.

Some days ago at the 'Brévent' (over Chamonix, french Alps)

-14°C, beautiful (cold) conditions, we put the tent next to a 'cliff' of snow; it looks nice to take pictures ... We just wonder if it wouldn't fall down during the night (mmh)

We 'cooked' pasta with Alexandre's stove (wich works only when we hit it) , and we knocked the pan over in the snow (= pasta ice with cold provencal sauce )

The second essay was better (!) ... and this sea of clouds, under us,... magnificent

"Fluted"

Shot on Day 1 of the video documentary for aFeinberg Galleries. After picking up BROVADO Weddings (Media) we drove up Waimea Canyon to the Kalalau Overlook and descended Kalepa Ridge...an epic hike that takes you to a spit of land that divides Kalalau and Honopu. Needless to say it offers incredible views.

This was shot just before sunset as the sun was preparing to pop out below the cloud line so it wasnt direct light but instead this bright filtered super sexy light. I isolated this ridges on the north side of the valley as they seemed to jump right out at me.

Look for the documentary to drop June 2012!

Thanks all!

The Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills at sunrise. I sat below the arch on this stormy morning getting pelted with rain and wind praying that the clouds in the east would break up to allow some light onto the sierra and the storm clouds. Luckily enough, right at sunrise, light peered through the clouds and illuminated the scene. Too bad Mt. Whitney was shrouded in clouds, but it still made for a beautiful photo none the less.

Eastern Sierra, Ca.

Did a more artistic composition with the aurora, those blue lights on the ocean are fish farms, composed it so that it looks like they are going into the powerbox which powers everything else through the lines.
