Happy New Year from deviantART! Taking a look back!
Before we look ahead to the expanse of artistic potential that is the new year, we wanted to look back at some of the amazing things the deviantART community accomplished in 2011. We continue to be humbled, year after year, by the nurturing power of the community home grown by deviants like you. Artists and art enthusiasts of every style you can imagine consider deviantART their home on the Internet for all things creative, and their talent and enthusiasm inspire our community to greater heights than ever thought possible.

The Creative Juggernaut that is BenHeine
Undoubtedly one of the most prolific, innovative, and exciting artists
exhibiting their work on deviantART has to be the amazing BenHeine.
In terms of sheer creativity and the true spirit of art as human expression that knows no bounds,
he is currently with few peers. His unique visual creations have been featured in newspapers, magazines
and other publications worldwide and over the last few years his works have begun to populate art galleries
and museums from Brussels and London to Turkey, Romania and South Korea.

You use the device in your hands to look at something and you press a button to capture the image you want.
That's the gist of it, but there's considerably more to it than that, especially if you want to take something that accurately represents your intentions.
For Project Educate, I'll be featuring some deviation tutorials on Photography that I like and hope that you yourself will find useful as a budding, seasoned or humbled expert photographer.
They will be broken down in the form of Technical and Creative tutorials. Some will be focused on numbers and basic ideas to compose and make a quality photo and others will be focused on what you can do with those techniques to make advanced visual creations.
For the most part, these tutorials apply to anyone that owns a camera, whether it be your compact, point and shoot or a DSLR.

deviantART and Journal spam: what we're doing!Spam is a constant thorn in the side of every Internet user's daily life. From the mundane to the surreal, these emails appear in our inboxes so frequently, messages from South African attorneys offering $10 million dollars get marked as spam without a second thought to savvy users.More Like This
We define spam as the misuse of communication systems to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately to our deviants. Typically, the content of spam messages is aimed at advertising a product that is often counterfeit or potentially malicious. With the rise of social networking, there's been an increase in more direct spamming -- companies who directly target your social network profiles.
"Over the last few years, deviantART has had a small but unfortunate stream of such abuse. Usually, it’s as easy as banning the offending members and moving on to more pressing problems, but recently something happened that caused us to re-evaluate how we handle spam issues."

The most popular and in my opinion the trickiest subject for Night time photography is Fireworks.
The important thing to remember is to use your own eyes and step away from the camera every so often. Nobody wants to go to a Firework display and not remember what the real thing was like. Memory is far better than the select sensations a picture can provoke!
USE the Tripod. It's not there as a leaning post. It's not there to look pretty or to rest your camera on when you feel like it. It's there to be used!

Project Educate: Aperture, Shutter and ISO SpeedToday we'll take a quick basic look at Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO Speed.More Like This
The aperture determines the amount of light that is allowed into the digital sensor. A small number indicates a large aperture whereas a large number indicates a lower aperture. For example, an aperture of 8 would let in less light than an aperture of 4. Imagine your eye, specifically your pupil; the bigger the pupil is, the more light is being let in and the smaller it is, the less light. This is what is effectively happening with your camera. The aperture also determines the DOF (depth of field).
The numbers you usually see on the side of lenses look like this;
F 22 | 16 | 11 | 8 | 5.6 | 2.4
The larger the number, the less light is allowed in. Each number depicts double the amount of light allowed through the lens. For example, an aperture of 5.6 will allow twice the amount of light in than 8, but only half the amount of light than 2.4.

"It's not always easy to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the sufferings around one. - Robert Capa"
The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos were announced this week and with it a debate was sparked about how best to display the controversial winners. The winning shot is Photo-journalism at it's best - and indeed humanity at its worst. The image depicts a young Afghan girl standing in the midst of the after effects of a bomb explosion. She is covered in blood, and around her lay bodies. Whilst the publication of graphic images has been a tough and much debated topic for some time - the very taking of such photos has sparked cynicism and unrest between many. Photo-journalists much of the time take their lives into their own hands when they document the horrors of this

“Creative slump - the Photographers equivalent of drought."
Every so often (and for many of us it feels like everyday sometimes!) we fall into a creative slump. It's not a place that the bubbliest most inspiring of people can rise us from. It's a horrible place, where you feel like you'll never be able to recoup that creativity again. But then something changes and you climb back out, you keep drawing, or fractal-ing or taking photographs and you're happy again.
It's funny how when we're creatively over flowing and positively genius's we rarely look back and remember the time when we couldn't envisage being artistic ever again. But equally when we're down and grasping at straws to try and pull ourselves out - we forget the achievements we've made, the times we succeeded. Perhaps it's time to remember both feelings - one extreme to another - maybe that will provide the little lift or equally the littl
Sucker PunchedThis is a LONG one so settle in!More Like This
I’ve been re-watching Sucker Punch a lot lately and have been humorously admiring how misunderstood it is. It’s almost comical how a movie that comes right out and says “I am about the negative connotations surrounding the constant sexual abuse and objectification that women endure,” gets reviewed and dismissed as “just another pandering male geek fantasy of objectified sexualized women.”
I could write a book on the various subtle metaphors and messages Sucker Punch visualizes, but I don’t wanna bore you all. But to demonstrate what I mean let’s just dissect a small piece of it.
Before we begin we need to understand two things. First, Director Zach Snyder made the film with the express intent of it being a feminist critique on geek culture. If you don’t believe me, hear it from his own words: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/interview-zack-snyder-on-the-sexuality-and-world
Nerd/Gaming/Comic Culture Sexism VideosSince this keeps being a reoccurring topic I thought I'd lend a hand and put together a comprehensive list of web shows and youtube videos that pretty much explain or talk about these various topics. The vast majority of these will be from Jimquisition and MovieBob's various shows (because in my eyes they're the two biggest proponents out there discussing this stuff on a regular basis), but there's a couple other web shows too. They've been all categorized and easily separated so you can pick and choose whatever you wanna watch. BTW: If you aren't already watching these shows, you really should be!More Like This

I'll be honest. I wasn't expecting the backlash to be so violent. But I guess I should expect this sort of thing whenever it comes to video games. At any rate, a lot of stuff is being thrown around haphazardly and I wanted to address some of the main complaints/defenses about my criticism of Quiet's design.
"She's got camo skin! She's dressed this way for a reason!"
You know, you can come up with any number of reasons for a character to be scantly clad. But at the end of the day it's still a scantly clad conventionally attractive female character. Not to put to fine a point on it but having Mystique walk around naked because her skin changes color doesn't stop her from being a source of obvious pandering T&A. So I'm sorry, but that whole "you'll be ashamed for slut-shaming her" excuse doesn't hold water with me, especially after Kojima outright said that her design was to sell
Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKSSo... that last journal was a doosie wasn't it? 500+ comments and counting! Yikes. I can always count on Anita Sarkeesian to give me tons of views, lol. All joking aside, that was a very serious batch of discussions. Anytime we talk about sexism and objectification of women in gaming or geek culture, it's sure to get a lot of responses.More Like This
Sadly since Anita is such a hot-topic around the internet, there was more than one person who were trying to claim that there actually isn't ANY issue with the game industry involving sexism at all. To them, this whole idea that women are marginalized or objectified or treated badly both in the gaming industry and in geek culture is just false. It doesn't exist. And any attempt to explain why we need to change things is inherently flawed because there's no reason to do so.
So in the interest of trying to debunk that bullshit, I made a list of sources I accumulated around the internet to prove that this is indeed a problem. I think everyone can benefit f

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.
For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

The Used Game ParadigmOver the course of this past generation I've been watching the video game market react to the way it's been forced to deal with increasing changes. I've come out against used game sales and even written a journal about boycotting GameStop because (like most people at the time) I believed they were the root cause of all the problems the video game industry has. But that's something I don't believe now as intently as i did then. From where I sit, piracy and used games sales are a problem, but not in the way game companies want us to believe that they are.More Like This
Used games are a good thing for consumers. We get to try games out, and if we don't like what we see or finish it early, we trade it in and try another title instead. It's a very good system for us since video game rentals are much harder to come by. Most video rental stores in America have gone extinct and outside specific Red Box Kiosks there aren't a lot of places for consumers to rent video games. The exception, of course, being thr

Didn't see this one coming either. Quite surprised, but personally don't care. I've never really paid attention to fighting games much, yes even Super Smash Bros. I have a feeling this will be one of those games that we think will be amazing, but the newest generation of kids won't understand why they should care (kinda like DuckTales).
Sidenote: Quite disappointed with the way they handled the demonstration by bringing out a woman to play multiplayer with and "destroying" her while simultaneously saying shit like "just give up... it will be over soon." Scripted or not, that scene was appalling.

Objectification of MenAfter reading through the comments on my last journal about Tropes Vs Women in Gaming Part 2 I noticed a lot of people are angry we're even talking about sexism because (as they put it) "men are ALSO sexualized and objectified in gaming so women shouldn't complain that they are too."More Like This
And while that's a nice thought that sounds logical at first... any causal observer to gaming and most media today will be able to recognize that the two sides are not equal enough to make that sort of comparison. Here's the difference as I see it: Men are objectified and sexualized, yes, but it's not done for women. It's done for men. The objectification of men in gaming and other media is a self image fantasy FOR men. In other words, both the objectification of men and women are done for the benefit of men.
Not only that but again a casual observer will note that the standards of "beauty" are not at all equal on both sides. Female heros are all designed to be attractive, sexy, thin, sensual, pure,

Tattooing has existed since the very beginnings of Neolithic human expression and has since those ancient beginnings continued to be a reliable flash indicator of personality type. There are those people who get tattoos and there those people who simply do not. Even though the social opprobrium for getting inked has greatly disappeared in recent years, and even though skin art has become almost boringly de rigueur amongst rock guitarists and other entertainers, there is still one element that separates the tattooed from the non-tattooed in terms of artistic appreciation: commitment.
Tattoos may be the first “interactive” art form. The art lover doesn’t just buy an artist’s artwork – he or she becomes one with artwork, he or she commits to becoming a living canvas for the artwork, he or she, by choosing the tattoo to be borne forever, shares authorship with the tattoo artist of the artwork. Crazy Horse had no fear of leading his warriors against Custer’s guns at the Little Big Horn, but he wouldn’t let his picture be taken on his deathbed, lest his soul be captured in the photograph. The art form I am talking about is of course the emoticon and throughout the past 10 or so years they have been happily adopted by deviantART and its community.
Although emoticons can often be spotted on a wide range of other instant messengers (IMs) and social media sites, deviantART has come to house a unique branch of these miniature art pieces. Whilst the majority of these alternative sites opt for simple, predominately yellow emotes with a range of basic expressions, the art community here at dA have stretched the art form far beyond its natural boundaries and developed entirely new styles of emoticons

Right brain warriors in the new age will be the coveted candidates ordained to lead and guide us; lifting the torch to light the way forward into a brave new beautiful world.
Artists have always feared that they are unappreciated and that the march of progress comes only from business, science and their machines. 1984 was imagined by an artist projecting these exact fears. Our guest essayist suggests the computer will never be our master, but only the super high speed counting machine it was meant to be leaving humans with only one pure task— being creative.

Mineral spirits became too watered down many people asked if I painted with watercolours. Liquin and a bit of poppy seed oil makes a perfect mixture. (Almond oil is what I want to try in future)
*Brushes- Round Synthetic mongoose. Flat square brushes was my fav back in the time but no longer.
*Pallet- I buy a painting frame with glass for $8 then I put a white paper under the glass and use that to mix my paints. I used to own a little fridge where I would store my pallet over night (it never dries but your fridge will smell like oil)
*Reference photos- I tape an ipad to my painting and I can zoom in, play music, photoshop and skype while I paint. Best invention ever !

A New Declaration by Derrick Jensen"We hold these truths to be self-evident:More Like This
That the real, physical world is the source of our own lives, and the lives of others. A weakened planet is less capable of supporting life, human or otherwise.
Thus the health of the real world is primary, more important than any social or economic system, because all social or economic systems are dependent upon a living planet.
It is self-evident that to value a social system that harms the planet's capacity to support life over life itself is to be out of touch with physical reality.
That any way of life based on the use of nonrenewable resources is by definition not sustainable.
That any way of life based on the hyper-exploitation of renewable resources is by definition not sustainable: if, for example, fewer salmon return every year, eventually there will be none. This means that for a way of life to be sustainable, it must not harm native communities: native prairies, native forests, native fisheries, and so on.

The Capture vs. The Pose
portrait of a WW2 vet...
When a subject poses to have his or her photograph taken, the subject tries to project a message about himself or
herself by how he or she “poses”, by the attitude of his or her body language or facial expression.
If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,
the facial expression “directed”, it is the photographer who is intending to communicate a message.
In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.
About cuteness. About unconditional loveWe need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals... In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.More Like This

More Updates to the New Thumbnails Preview
Several weeks ago, we released a sneak peek of deviantART's new thumbnails. We've been making changes based on community responses, and today we've implemented a few more. In this updated version, the font, spacing, and colors of the text under the thumbs have been adjusted. Also, several members had concerns about the "frames" that were put around thumbs that were either extra tall, extra wide, or small images (such as emoticons and avatars). We've adjusted the visual display of these frames to make them less distracti

Research carried out by Nikon has estimated that an amazing 332 million jubilee related photos will be taken on the day of the Thamas River Pageant on June 3rd. That's amazing. It even tops the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton last year. The upcoming Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth has sparked patriotism in the most unlikely places meaning that driving down a normal street turns into an epic photo opportunity with the various bunting, flags and other bits and pieces. So whether or not you're local to London and able to join in the four days of pomp and ceremony that the British are allegedly famed for - you might find that there are events and things local to you that will bring out the journalistic candid photographer that's screaming inside to get out! Deviant and Art MentionsMentions: Connecting PeopleMore Like This
Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.

How to Mention
There are four ways to mention a deviant.

In Addition to our FIVE original folders that we've had since the beginning of 2012,
and the News Folder that we added in the middle of 2012,
we added FIVE Special Folders to our Group, at the beginning of 2013.
WHY DID WE DO THIS?
The main reason we did this, was to bring a deeper meaning to our Group, as far as our love and concerns for Nature.
With special news articles after every three months, which will reflect the work submitted to these folders, we are able to help share and spread awareness about particular issues that have an impact on Nature, which we would likely care about given the original idea for this group, to begin with. If you joined this group it is because you love and care about Nature,
KindnessAs you may know, two bombs were detonated at the finish line of the Boston Marathon today. 2 people are confirmed dead, and many more are seriously injured, with amputations and all. And, I was there, standing nothing but a block away, watching the marathon with my friend and my mom, holding up my sign that read 'run like you stole something.'More Like This
When the first bomb went off, I jumped. Everything around me vibrated, and I felt the blast in my heart. About 20 seconds later, the second one went off. That's when we pushed our way out of the crowd, and just started walking away. By now, I was scared, and kind of nauseous. People around us were screaming, and just running. Running like they stole something. Little kids were crying, and their mother and fathers were comforting them, "its going to be ok. You're ok." We all thought we were being attacked by terrorists.
Our car was parked 5 miles away at the Alewife train station. They shut the trains down, so we had to walk,

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through dA,
Not a troll was stirring, nor Grinch in his sleigh.
Deviations were hung in digital Galleries with care,
In hopes that +Favourites soon would be there.
The n00bs were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Daily Deviations danced in their heads.
And Fella in his 'kerchief, and spyed with his night-light,
Had just settled down to log-off for the night,
When over in the Forums there arose such a clatter,
Fella sprang back online to see what was the matter.
To the browser window he flew like a flash,
Tore open the tabs and refreshed the cache.
When what to his art-loving eyes should appear,
But an animated sleigh and eight commissioned reindeer,
With a little old driver, so creative and slick,
Fella knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than broadband, his reindeer were famed,

Watermarks. Really?Do you know what is most annoying thing on DA for me?More Like This

It's not the naive and annoying pony, amateur manga, cartoon and similar drawings made by inefficient fanboys and fangirls.

It's not even the avalanche of penises and vaginas, starting to haunt at the exact time of the day and week, on the
starting page of DA (which I leave as soon as possible, anyway).
And the strange thing - I can't remember any really impressive work, which would have a watermark on it.
I totally understand watermarks on editorial photos (been working as photo-editor and photo-reporter myself),
especially on reportage shooting or the shots which bring historica
