I've been absent for the past few weeks because I've been training using the Digital Tutors service. I have to admit, I'm not sure how good their training is. I mean, I am not impressed at all by their digital painting offerings. Does that mean that their Maya offerings aren't impressive as well? I can't tell. The problem is that I know how to paint digitally, but I'm entirely ignorant of Maya. Which means that I can't really judge. I have to learn it, and I have to start somewhere.
My job hunt back in february showed me plenty of job offers but many of them required some knowledge of Maya. The shift in interest away from 2D in both videogames and animation has made knowing these packages a necessity.
Maya is so complex that I've realized that even with 20 hour work weeks of training, I am still woefully ignorant of how to use Maya. And much like using photoshop, it's something that you just have to do. Still, I'm more aware of how to use it than before
