Canon 60D
18-135mm kit lens

Another rather incredible sunset from this week, this one from Tuesday night. The scene really came together in Boys Town, NE, as a family of geese strutted into my frame. Geese, the Boys Town water tower, and a fiery sunset above the lake... can't ask for much more than that! :) Also took a timelapse of this scene, which will be forthcoming in a future timelapse film 8-)

Just Minutes after a storm came through. It's ironic how when you're not looking for weather to photograph, it always seems to present itself in the most beautiful and majestic ways. This is probably one of my favorite shots of this year during the storm season. Those to me are always the best shots, the one's you're not expecting!

Frame is a soft monochromatic, with a soft dropped shadow. This picture was not enhanced or edited in any way, other then framework and minor correction to correct camera distortion. Everything else was Mother Nature's doing! Hope you all enjoy!

For those that don't know "Empyrean" means "Sky". I have changed the category from 'waterscape' to now 'weather and sky'. Sorry for the error.

This spot has been on my 'to shoot' list for quite some time. And by that I mean about 2-3 years. I scouted it once on a different session a ways back but just haven't gone back...til Halloween '11. Spooky indeed.

Having set my alarm to go shoot a location on the east side my body didn't decided to wake up til the alarm was turning OFF!! Yikes! With not enough time to drive I quickly had to make a plan B. I quickly pulled up my Photographer's Ephemeris (MUST HAVE APP!) and realized the sun would be just a the edge of my composition limits for this spot. And off we go.

The road down to here....mostly fine...until the end where I constantly heard myself saying "what are you doing, how are you going to get back" (not 4wd car). Doesn't matter...get to location and figure it out.

Now this spot while incredible offers a series of serious challenges. To get the amount of water necessary for the waterfall/hole effect the waves need to be big enough. And second the trade winds blow AT you. Fun.

Another thing you might notice is that this is shot at 16mm...which, might be kinda dumb if I wasn't paying attention. Who needs coffee at 630am when you have LARGE waves to wake you up.

I was anchored in as much as I could to my spot, composition was on (notice rocks/lines as visual leaders) and then the bigger waves started coming in. Yea, grab the tripod and scurry! Which is problematic because I want more water falling in in the back left side.

Alas the best photo of the morning was this one just before the sun poked up but I will be back for sure...and hopefully with a spotter (read: person holding me with a rope attached).

THANKS!
aF

"Adieu"

It's always good to have spots in one's mind that we can run to close by for sunrise and sunsets. I am extraordinarily lucky that this is that close to my house. Some friends asked me to head down here for sunset about 20 min before the sun was to depart so hurrying to the trail and mostly running/sliding down it, got down to the bottom and was greeted by this scene.

From a technical standpoint these shots are always tricky. Camera's are not good at capturing the range of light in scenes like this. The main exposure is taken with a 3stop Reverse GND to control the light but that leaves us with an ugly dark line across the landscape in this case so I took 2 other exposures to be able to blend it away. Then the normal dodge/burn.

Oh yea...then the sunset went cotton candy nuclear. More soon!

Thanks!

I have a vertical version of this scene uploaded here already, but I thought I would post the horizontal version as well. What the vertical doesn't show well, is the source of light. I was able to blend two exposures together to bring out the most of the amazing light that I witnessed this evening. This resulted in a fairly fine band of light streaking across the landscape and painting the ridge on the left. It was one of the most amazing light shows I have seen, and was fortunate to view this scene with just a few other photographers who I was camping with.

Pretty satisfied with this one, managed to not get those blown out highlights while retaining the foreground detail in 1 shot.

Layer edit to lift up the shadow details in this, contrast added by increasing blacks instead of actually adjusting contrast, then reduced highlights by about 40%.

The classic view of Mt. Assiniboine seen from The Niblet.

Taken on my first evening back at this gorgeous dreamlike place. The area has received a fair amount of snow a few days before I visited. The snow combined with the golden larch trees made this view extra spectacular!

Tons upon tons of herring found their demise in this bay, smothered from lack of oxygen in its waters. It was a sad scene indeed, a good reminder of life's frailty.
Needless to say, I couldn't bear the smell of fish for a month after this ordeal.

Out in the nature things stop matter. It doesn't matter if you're rich or if you're the smartest person on the planet.
Nature doesn't judge you, it doesn't judge anybody.
Everyone can be themselves and enjoy the living things.
To stand and watch a beautiful sunset is something I hope people can do and for those who can't, I share mine.
This is nature, asleep, waiting for a new day to come.

This photo was made in my absolute favorite area for fall photography in Utah. The hike is a quick, easy trail, but on this morning a storm was blowing through, and the sun would occasionally break through the clouds forcing me to stop to make some photos!

Eventually I made it to the falls and started thinking about the photo I wanted to make. The color of the leaves was just about perfect, and I was really drawn to the water flowing amongst the rocks. The perfect angle required me to take off my shoes, and stand in the freezing cold water to setup this shot. The clouds overhead provided the perfect flat light to capture the incredible colors of the leaves as well as the moss on the fall itself.

This shot is a part of Landscape Calendar #1, which is now available :D

The tremendous scale of this glacier cave is lost without a reference point. Situated just above the scenic and secluded Wedgemount Lake, it's a testament to the yearly retreat of the Wedgemount Glacier. The pace of the melting is remarkable, as even a few days in the summer can bring significant changes. The cave towers above you at 5 storeys high, making you feel small and insignificant in its magnificent presence. Accessible only via a rugged and extremely steep hike, only a few thousand people get to see it every year.

Equipment: Nikon D90 + Tokina 11-16mm + Tiffen Polarizer.

Full view is duty!

Kaiju (怪獣 kaijū?) is a Japanese word that literally translates to "strange creature."

Explanation here: please read carefully!!

I did only paint the Kaiju in Photoshop from scratch, not the whole Landscape!
The landscape is a painting from Thomas Moran from 1864 - check out his amazing works: www.thomas-moran.org/
The piece is in Public Domain, according to: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil…
What does that mean? fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/…

Actually the intention behind this is to learn from the old masters, what better way of studying them while getting in the image and paint something that is not there?
Honestly, I learned so much more from this painting than a 2 weeks stay at the Louvre would probably ever do. Especially in terms of appreciating the techniques of the masters and learning to emulate them digitally - a priceless exercise!

Additionally this was a nice way to practice light and color, inspired by the book from James Gurney.

My aim was to make the creature to be believable in the situation, rather than corresponding, I wanted it to look like it was painted by Moran - still way to learn but I´m quite happy with the result of this approach so far.

Here´s a process-sheet from the development of the creature inspired by Guy Davis:

Complete-kaiju-process by fantasio

I don´t care if someone likes it, but I plan to do a series of these, probably called "The Kaiju arthistory project" I imagine also to have the Marshmellow man, Godzilla and Star Wars playing a role in this, but at first I found Pacific Rim a good start - liked that movie very much.

Suggestion for other Kaiju´s are welcome as well as also constructive comments!!

I like popculture and I love traditional art, so this project came so naturally to me and since the paintings are public domain no one was harmed, not even the original paintings opposed to the Thriftstore paintings some artist use to overpaint.

There is no intention to sell these images, I did them for learning purposes and use them in my classes as well, however, if you want it as a wallpaper, feel free to hit the download-button to get the 1900x1200 px version.

cheers,
fant

To have a world that's show the essence of beauty every day is to be rich.
To what lengths are we willing to sacrifice ourselves for the natural freedom that once were?
Take a good look because once you blink it might all be lost, forever.

I wish for my children, and for your children, that awareness is set and open minds are born.
To leave a legacy is not hard. To leave a future, that's where the real challenge starts.

Help me help the future.
