Well, that's not quite right: she thought very much about it, just incorrectly and predictably so. She thought, as she had been planning on thinking for every hour of the past week, that Henry had finally cracked. The deep abyss of his empty, scholarly life had finally given way to the enticing love whirlwind that she had so sensationally presented, and he had come looking for her.
In fact, he sounded very much frayed and uncertain about himself when he said, "I wanted to see you." Very unstable on this new and fertile ground in life, she imagined, and though she hadn't nearly the ability to do so, the diction would have furthered her conviction: It wasn't a command, nor even a particularly forceful statement. Any half intelligent person could have interpreted the meaning of that telling past tense. The poor creature was unaccustomed to this kind of unorthodoxy.
