A wonderful sunset that happened a week ago. I feared the sun would not appear, but things finally cleared up and some light briefly pierced the edge of the clouds and lit up the amazing shapes in front of me.

ABOUT THE IMAGE:
During my time in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta Canada I visited Moraine Lake on a number of occasions. I continually went back there not only to capture it under varying conditions but simply because the place is AMAZING. Each and every time I made it up there I would sit and stare in awe. It is hard not to.

Prior to my latest visit of this location I had captured it under your typical sunny summer conditions and on other occasions completely or partially frozen over but I still wasn’t satisfied. I wanted it snow covered with the lake in its liquid state.

On this particular occasion I was driving back to where I was living in Canmore, Alberta, Canada from Olympic National Park in Washington U.S.A. It was a long day of driving and after just having spent almost 2 months living out of my van/tent on the road I was ready to get home to Canmore. Anyway, I was just one hour from Canmore at 10:30pm when it started to snow pretty heavily, enough so that I was convinced it was going to stick (It was fall so the temperatures had just began to take a dive becoming cold enough for snow to not melt as soon as it landed). I thought to myself, this may be the last and only opportunity I get to shoot Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks blanketed in snow. I figured it was too good of an opportunity to pass up and spent the night in the van hoping the conditions cleared in the morning.

I’m happy I decided to stick it out for one last night. What a magic morning.

Never ceases to amaze me!

I have just got back from a few days away with my wife :iconvamps46: to celebrate our anniversary in the Lake District. This is a place called Wast Water and is virtually untouched, all there is is a road leading to it that ends at a pub, you have to turn around and go back the way you came. To get here you travel through dense woodland and forest and as you come into the opening this is what greats you. A place you could simply sit and stare at for hours, I watched an artist at work high on an outcrop, lost in the world around him, the few that venture here simply stand in awe for a while before they remember they came to photograph.

They joy I have is that the whole area is managed by the National Trust and they will not allow any development anywhere, the pub has been here for years but there will be no tourist attractions such as cafes etc, you come here to simply see what there is.

I always wanted go back here once I had gathered some more kit and know how.

How the weather can change, next day on the way home:

With an April backpacking trip to the Smokies drawing near, I find myself digging through images from my Autumn 2010 excursion to the same park. While always learning new processing techniques and ways of seeing, photos that were once looked over for whatever reason are suddenly popping out at me, causing me to question why I never game them a chance.

It's very exciting to not only revisit the memories but to realize how important it is to have faith in your abilities as an artist. I'm nowhere near the end of my photographic career and there is still an endless amount of experience I have yet to gain.

Although, I do know how far I have come. I can see a true progression from my first images to my more recent work and it causes great excitement for my future.

Maintaining a quick pace hiking up Mt. Belford (14,197 ft), one may forget to take a moment and look back to see what ground you've covered. So, during the sunrise, you can bet I looked back to see the sun barely caressing the tops of the nearby mountains. And having wildflowers everywhere made the moment that much more magical.

Recently I had the chance to photograph some severe storms just outside of Denver International Airport. The crazy thing is that this was totally unexpected, we were actually out there to shoot a massive wild Sunflower field (which turned out to be rather bunk) and instead were greeted with an amazing display of weather. So much so I got a clip of it on my cell phone of the Messocyclone that was right above us [link] We stayed with the storm as long as we could which provided us some great lightning shots.

Hope you all like it

The sunflowers seem to go on forever along the eastern plains of Colorado at dusk, just never ending as far as you can see. This field was massive in size, and it has, for all intents and purposes, been a very productive year for myself with photographing sunflowers. Several thousand shots taken, a lot of new friends made to shoot with, and new fields found to shoot. I am not even sure where to start processing all these shots as I have so many.

I hope you all like it

New picture from Patagonia 1 month trip .

I chose a cold white balance and muted tones for this scene ; but still hesitating with the pure B/W version .

This was in the first part of our trip, reaching 'lago de Los tres' quite famous place just in front of this crazy fortress ( Cerro Fitz Roy ) .

What I really liked here is the cloud bow just above the mountains .

Here you can see the same mountain during the night :

I hope you'll enjoy this vision,

thank you

This was the morning after a wet and windy wild camp. Rain, sleet, mist and cloud plagued us for the whole evening and night and it was very overcast and wet for sunrise. The sun did come out eventually, whilst we were having breakfast obviously!

"Alpine Sunflower Meadows" - The Sunflower wildfire meadows frame the Ten Mile range of the Colorado Rockies at sunset along Boreas Pass outside of Breckenridge. It was an incredible sight to behold. Quiet refreshing up here, while it was close to 100 in Denver, up here you needed sweatshirts. Ahhhh, have to love that cool summer mountain air in the Rockies! Nature's air conditioner.

EDIT: thank you very much for the DD, I'm honored :) I've decided to reprocess the image and post it as a larger version. I hope you enjoy it!

Arguably the most beautiful and impressive waterfall I've ever seen, Aldeyjarfoss is even more impressive in its frozen winter clothing, and this image doesn't begin to do it justice. In winter, it is reachable only by super jeeps, but making the effort to get there was definitely worth the hardship.
The 20-meter-high waterfall is part of the river Skjálfandafljót, and is famous for its hexagonal basalt columns, belonging to the Suðurárhraun lava field.
We will be visiting Aldeyjarfoss on a wild super-jeep ride during my upcoming 'Winter Paradise' workshop.

If you wish to visit and shoot these awesome locations under my dedicated guidance, please check out my upcoming 'Land of Ice' (south Iceland) and 'Winter Paradise' (northern Iceland) photography workshops next January. You can view the workshops teaser trailer here!

A cold morning of november, in the mountains of Pyrénées. I wake up and go out from the refuge to photograph the sunrise. It's cold and the wind blows. To the east, the first glow of dawn illuminate the clouds, and gives them an inflamed color. On the summits, other clouds undulate as the flags of old ships ...

Once again Christmas Cove dose not disappoint. Another wonderful summer sunset at this Northern Michigan beach. Wind was blowing quite quickly over the water, making for an opportunity to incorporate the atmosphere of the location into the photograph. I was truly excited to see this moment unfold, I only hope I am able to translate my experience into the photograph so you can also feel the emotion. Any thoughts, good or bad, are truly something I take to heart, please let me know what you think.

Went for a photo safari with a professional photographer, Gilbert Van Reenen, while on vacation in New Zealand. It was quite an experience, he took us places most tourists probably never see and it was great having another photographer there to talk with and bounce ideas back and forth.

After a fun and at times educational drive through the Nevis Valley, we headed out for the day and stopped to get some last few shots. There was an extremely interesting rock formation and as this was the last real day of our trip I just knew the type of shot I wanted to take.

New Zealand was an amazing place, a secret, hidden place, and this shot captures that feeling perfectly for me.

Enjoy!

Fall is on the cusp here in Colorado and as a photographer, it's my busiest time of the year. It seems everyone is excited and is posting their fall images from years past. I love this time of the year...it's so gorgeous here. In this image, fog lifts off a lake as the sunlight reflects against the trees just after sunrise. To get the image, I used a Sigma 170-500mm lens on my Sony A550 backed up by a Puffin Pad to get the shot. Why such a long lens? Well, let me explain....One of the things I love to do is called "compression landscapes". It's taking a very long lens which is usually reserved for wildlife photography and getting in close to study the landscape which the naked eye otherwise wouldn't see. I love photographing this way and panning around seeing what I can find and working out a composition which I otherwise would miss. I am really looking forward to Autumn this year however it will be sort of bitter sweet.

For the last several years I have held meetups each and every Autumn in Rocky Mountain National Park. We've had some great times, met a whole lot of great people along the way if I do it this year, which will be very last minute if I do, it will be my last. Next year I plan on holding actual workshops and teaching people the art of photography. In the planning stages now, I am very excited by its prospects but also I will sadly miss doing things very informal. It's truly a huge undertaking and involves a lot of planning and forethought but is a huge step forward for me as working photographer. As it stand snow, I will be holding 2 weekend workshops concentrating on general nature photography and travelscape photography during autumn in Colorado next year. It's slowly coming together though and if you';re interested, stay tuned in the coming months for much more information.
