CensorshipMore Like This
Censorship at the hands of an establishment is not a good idea.
I understand, as many have suggested, that DeviantART may have enacted their new "mature content filter" policy under threat of lawsuits or whatnot. I don't personally understand WHAT those lawsuits may be.
What is wrong with parents? Don't they understand that it is THEIR job to monitor and apply censorship where their children are concerned? If you don't want your kids looking at nudity and whatnot, pay attention to where they go online. It shouldn't be the responsibility, nor the prerogative of an online art community to apply those standards.
If a child really wants to view "mature" content, it is extremely easy to create an account and lie about his/her age. So all this filter does is punish those of us who tell the truth about our age.
Also, censorship goes against the spirit of art. You wouldn't sculpt a fig leaf onto David's package, or deny a young art student access to books featuring artists like Rene Magritte.
