“The Ferryman"

MMMMM Series
(Merton Maxi Meaningful Mixed Media Series)

© Merton Parrish
All rights reserved

NOTES ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE IN THIS SERIES:

This piece reflects my focus, rather consistently over the years on the meaning of our life here on earth, and my curiosity about our trip here and back to the "other world." I assume that we did come from the "other side" and return to it. Perhaps we simply go to dust. I, of course hope this is not the case, and NDE experiences would seem to support that we do live on. '

There is an image, in literature of a ferryman, who guides souls in his boat, navigating waters of the River of Forgetting, withe a long black stick.

It has always seemed incomprehensible to me (and disappointing) that we must forget all we presumably knew, before coming to earth. So many problems with human behavior would be solved, if we did not cross this River of Forgetting (and life would not be nearly so hard)!

You may also find this journal entry on the subject of the River of Forgetting of interest ( [link] ). It expounds further upon my feelings concerning this subject.

NOTES ON THIS SERIES:

The MMMMM Series (Merton Maxi Meaningful Mixed Media Series) was begun in 2011 by myself, Merton Parrish, in my “house of many studios.” I completed it mostly in my bedroom studio, where I spend a great deal of time lately (and in which I now, with some recent modifications, can draw, ink, traditionally colorize, photograph, scan, edit and post). Some of the work, however, was done in the den drawing studio, during tv with hubby, or late at night when I could not sleep and needed not to wake hubby with a bright “art light,” marker/pencil scratches/squeaks, airbrush “pssssh’es,” etc.

The series consists of large (“maxi”) mixed media works which tend to be on meaningful themes (to Mertons and other humans). These were originally pencil drawings on large, frequently recycled art boards, cardboards, or painted/gessoed-over prints in large frames. After the pencil drawings were finished (as is common with me of late) the pieces were inked with fine black pen. Then, they were colorized traditionally (by hand) with mediums from amongst the following list:

*colored pencil
*pastel pencil
*Copic markers
*Copic marker with aircan airbrush attachment

This series, like many of my groupings of original art, may be added to in the future. I rather enjoyed doing these large, “maxi” works, and feel that their size adds to their impact. The pieces are anywhere from about the dimensions of a big fish (think exaggerating fishermen, saying, “It was THIS big!”) to several which fit in some nice, big frames purchased by my parents at a hoighty toighty furniture store (the sort of frames designed to hold large art prints and take up substantial wall space behind a couch). So, the larger pieces in the series are pretty good size.

Now, if I can only figure out a way to do some of those REALLY big art pieces… the kind one sees covering entire walls of a certain, ever-present coffee house chain, of great renown. That would be cool. Maybe I can talk hubby into turning our garage into a big art studio, after all. Hmmm… “It could happen!” as comedian Judy Tenuta would say! Wink.

I can dream, can’t I?

(I should get busy manifesting and follow my own rhetoric, now shouldn’t I!?!

“Baggage"

MMMMM Series
(Merton Maxi Meaningful Mixed Media Series)

© Merton Parrish
All rights reserved

NOTES ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE IN THIS SERIES:

This piece is a metaphorical representation of the fact that we humans come with all sorts of baggage (particularly when we get a bit of mileage on us!). The convertible, bicycle, and (humorously) the pogo stick refer to life as a journey. And, each of these modes of transportation are depicted with all sorts of suitcases, valises, etc., since, as we go along, we get more and more emotional "stuff" to cart about with us.

We work on being in the now, letting go, thinking of only the now as real, etc., but it is not easy. Notice the road signs. They are full of directions we might go, which might help us in dealing with all of this baggage.

This one is a bit programmatic... but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!

I get many questions from people who want to use my photos somehow – I state they need my permission, but I am too busy to answer their notes and comments at the same time. Very stupid situation that is in fact a trap for all those who are polite and really ask for permission :(

That’s why I decided to create some general rules.

I hope they fit any situation you might think about, but if you get any idea, please, do not hesitate to comment!

Those rules will be also on the main page of my account and I will link to them through every of my new deviations :D

A little pack with all my style brushes and textures for Paint Tool Sai that I had when I first installed Paint Tool SAI in my computer.
I hope this will help you :)

F.A.Q.
*********************

» WATCH THE VIDEO TUTORIAL TO HELP YOU «

1 - I had a problem with the brushes! Where I supposed to put them all cause, where I put them aren´t appearing at all? No new texture or brushes showed up?
In the folder in your hard drive where all the Paint Tool SAI files are kept there are folders called “elemap”, “blotmap”, etc. The same folder names are in the pack. Just drag the files, one to one, if it need, from the corresponding folder of the pack to the one in your hard drive folder.
On windows, it may be possible that you need to be the administrator of your computer.

2 - What do you mean by corresponding folders? I tried copying and pasting but it didn't work!
In SAI program folders, you should have “botmap” “papertext” folders, just copy and past in the correct folder. If you just copy and past files without updating .CONF files, then don’t forgot to copy its name into “brushtext.CONF” or “brushform.CONF” in the SAI program folder ^^ (open those files with Notepad). After that, please, use “start-sai.EXE” to launch SAI.

3 - I don't see my Installation Folder. Help, please? Where am I supposed to be able to find it?
Your installation folder must be where you have unzipped the SAI Installation or in your hard drive. I can just advice you to do a search on your hard drive to find it.

4 - Why can't I make modifications for textures or brushes? (by ~christelaln)
This is mostly for information purpose, those who have free edition of SAI are unable to make modifications for brushes and/or textures.
According to ~ChameleonGirl-Andrea, it would work for the free version. So, see with your respective versions of SAI, but please, paid attention and take your precautions before any changes.

5 - Why this pack adds nothing new to me?
This pack contains my brushes and textures by default, so if you have a good starting SAI, this package will not help you.

6 - On Mac, I try to drag files into the already existing folders. However, when I try that, it won’t copy over. Why?
For Mac, I do not know much, because although I have a Mac, I have not installed SAI on it. If SAI is just a file with several folders (like on windows), may I ask you to check that the permissions (cmd + i) of your file and subfolders are in "read and write" mode for all users.

7 - I have SAI for mac but I don’t have any type of folder, just the “.APP”. Is there a way to fix that or...?
On mac, when you are in the application folder, you have to click on the icon of your application, then on "Display Package Contents". It allows you to view the contents of your application. After I do not know if you will have the same folders than windows version but I still hope for you :)

8 - Nothing happens when I click that pic!
All you do is click the download button at the top right of this page and you extract the files. For more explanation, read the description.

9 - How do u unzip a .ZIP file?
Normally, it depend of your OS but sometimes you will need to install an unzip software like “7-zip” or “WinRAR”. It will unzip your file in the same folder as your .RAR or .ZIP. You have plenty of free software for that. Mine on windows is “iZarc”. Totally free!

10 - I'm missing (simple circle). Where can i download that?
You can't donwload (simple circle) because it'is the default brush in SAI, so you can't missing it in your SAI instalation.
But sometime (simple circle) is called [none] in other versions of SAI.

11 - How can I add the textures only and not the default brushes please ?
To add brushes textures, you have four thing to do: first, close SAI. Then, add your "nameTexture.bmp" file in the "brushtex" folder. Think to modify the file "brushtex.conf" and add a new line : "1,brushtexnameTexture.bmp" before saving the file. To finish, restart SAI.

12 - Your file gave my laptop a virus and made it shut down? Could you check it please?
On two different laptops, I checked, analysed and unzip the file, and yet, no virus was detected. So check that you have antivirus software on you laptop! It may be something unrelated to my file.

I WILL NOT ANSWER ANYMORE AT YOUR QUESTIONS REGARDING THESE BRUSHES AND ITS INSTALATION.
The video tutorial and FAQ are here to help you. I can't do more than that to guide you.
And please, remember to save your files before starting any change. I will not be responsible for errors after installation.

Val d'Orcia-Tuscany

The Val d’Orcia, or Valdorcia, is a region of Tuscany, central Italy, which extends from the hills south of Siena to Monte Amiata. It is characterised by gentle, carefully cultivated hills occasionally broken by gullies and by picturesque towns and villages such as Pienza (rebuilt as an “ideal town” in the 15th century under the patronage of Pope Pius II), Radicofani (home to the notorious brigand-hero Ghino di Tacco) and Montalcino (the Brunello di Montalcino is counted among the most prestigious of Italian wines). It is a landscape which has become familiar through its depiction in works of art from the Renaissance painting to the modern photograph.

I was walking outside with a friend at 3am in the morning when I saw her. Being a feline lover, I couldn’t resist but show my love. When I was going back home, she followed all the way back like a puppy. How can I ignore that.. I took her home.  She suffered from Gangrene and vet had to make her sleep, before the virus could spread all over her body and make her paralyzed. She was already suffering. I had her for 3 weeks, and I will never forget how being a stray/abandoned cat she became so close to me from the very first day. She was not like an usual cat.

It's the first time I've ever had a shirt on a fancy shirt site!!! ^^ I'm really excited! Kodama and three other shirt designs will be for sale on the 25th of June over at Teefury!

Cinnamoron drew this piece, kind of on a silly whim. :P And then I painted it. It was a fun experiment! I'm more used to spending a lot of time on each illustration, this one is just clean and simple, painted in only a few hours. ^^
