Winamp: Notif

A simple, minimalist skin I made in just a few days. It is, by far, the smallest one so far. So small, in fact, that the contents were compressed before creating the .zip file. And, it only runs on one script.

Installation: Un-zip the archive, and place the 'Notif' folder into your 'Skins' folder. Then, launch Winamp and select it by right-clicking and going to Skins -> Notif.

Don't forget to view my latest submissions! [link]

Please check out XceNiK, he supplied me with many included resources: [link]

Release note: the script included was made by Skin Consortium, you can visit them here: [link]

Enjoy!

I've just written a new Article over at Pixelresort.com on the best practises of app icon design. This is the template i've provided in that article.

Read the article on Pixelresort: iPhone App Icon Design: Best Practises

Designing your application icon is a most crucial part of your success on the iPhone platform. The App store with it’s more than 70.000 apps have become quite the crowded bazaar. As an interface designer i cannot but marvel at the emphasis this has put on the delicate art of icon design.

If you feel like mastering your own app icon I’ve put together a simple-to-use PSD file template that will help you get started on your 57×57 pixel gem. Download it here and Fav if you like it.

To help a fellow deviant, I've put together a download that anyone with Gimp 2.8 on Linux can use to make their copy of gimp look more like Adobe Photoshop and make people more comfortable.

I've taken various bits of guides online and various tweaks. All you have to do is download the file, unzip it. Then in the file manager go to your home folder, show hidden files, delete or move your old .gimp-2.8 configuration folder out of the way, and replace with the new one. Then load gimp. Then me know if it works for you or if it fails.

Update: Icon were blurry in the original icon theme. I've patched them all up to be much clearer.
Update2: The drop here text is now gone and the default background when loading is the same dark grey.

Cosplay Friday: Batman's Villains

Fri Dec 5, 2014, 6:33 PM
The Joker by LeanAndJess

Welcome to Batman’s Rogue Gallery of Villains

Chaotic, corrupt, and crazy criminals—the dark side of Gotham is all that and so much more.

These iconic villains have inspired people around the world to give in to their darkest desires and join the ranks of the cosplay elite. From warped clown faces and  poisoned lips, to jewel thieving catsuits and a two faced liar, see the best of the worst put on a mask to reveal the darker side of the human condition.

Who would have thought that being so deliciously bad could look so incredibly good?

With the newly introduced DeviantArt Mobile App for Android and iOS, our goal was to bring you a better, fresher, yet familiar DeviantArt experience — providing more power to do what you want and, more importantly, create deeper connections between your friends and favorite artists.  We have plenty of plans for the future — including Notes and Push Notifications, which didn’t make it into the first version — and we want to hear what you’d like to see next to help shape the future of the app.

What’s Next

  • iOS 7 Support: The DeviantArt Mobile App is currently only available for iOS 8; however, we're committed to supporting iOS 7 in the near future.
  • Notes: In order to provide the best possible Notes experience, the Notes system will be moving to a more chat-like interface -- both on desktop and mobile.  Notes will be grouped by deviant, which will make your inbox less cluttered.
  • Push Notifications: Push notifications will keep you informed about timely and relevant content -- including comments, Notes, and other account-related activity.
  • Continuous Updates: Development of the DeviantArt Mobile App is ongoing.  We’re excited to release updates every two weeks providing stability improvements and bug fixes.

Watch Feed & Notifications

As we designed the DeviantArt Mobile App, we understood the need to build something that streamlined the DeviantArt experience.  The Watch Feed was specifically built for smartphones and tablets.  While we love the robust tools currently available in the Message Center of the desktop site, the Message Center is not an environment that works well on mobile.  We will continue to improve the Watch Feed and Notifications on the DeviantArt Mobile App to make the art you crave and content you need more accessible.

Possibilities for What’s to Come

The first version of the DeviantArt Mobile App provides an entirely new way to experience the DeviantArt community.  You’ll be able to browse art endlessly, stay intimately connected with your Watch List, and submit art on the go -- and there’s more on the way.  As we continue to develop the app, more desktop site features will be supported.

The following features are not currently supported on mobile:

  • Editing and deleting Deviations, Journals, Status Updates, Comments, Collections, and Galleries.
  • Full Groups access
  • Critiques
  • Prints
  • Polls
  • Chat & Forums
  • Full Sta.sh access
  • Contest and challenges
  • Commissions, Premium Content, and Downloads

Known Issues

Below is a list of prominent known issues:

  • (iOS only) The app's bottom navigation bar is not present on Profiles.
  • (iOS and Android) Images cannot be added to Literature.
  • (iOS and Android) Images added to Status Updates cannot be opened.  (Update: resolved!)

Get Started and Stay Tuned

If you have general feedback or feature requests, we’d love to hear your input!  Please leave a comment on this journal.

In the event you run into a bug or unintended experience why using the app, please submit your issue to the Help Desk using our iOS bug report and Android bug report forms.

Get it on Google Play

(iOS 8 only, iOS 7 coming soon)

Norman Rockwell, All American Deviant

Tue Oct 28, 2014, 7:51 PM
Untitled-1 by techgnotic

Few artists have so definitively reflected the lives of average Americans as Norman Rockwell.

He began his lifetime dedication to being the “America’s Illustrator” as the 19-year-old art editor for Boys’ Life, the house publication of the Boy Scouts of America. A few years later he assumed his more famous position at The Saturday Evening Post, though he never broke his ties with the Boy Scouts.  His first great achievement painting everyday scenes of America in his signature hyper-realistic style was “The Four Freedoms,” a series inspired by a speech by the U.S. President, Franklin Roosevelt, in 1943 during World War II.  Two of the four paintings, “Freedom from Want,” depicting a family Thanksgiving dinner scene, and “Freedom of Speech,” with an average Joe voicing his opinion at a Town Hall meeting, have become all-American visual icons in the decades since their creation.

Freedom of Worship
by Norman Rockwell

Rockwell was a true American patriot, lending his talents when needed as a propagandist of war during World War II, but also painting pleas for peace and reconciliation when inner strife tore at the nation’s fabric in the 1950s and 1960s. He painted his version of the WWII female icon, Rosie the Riveter, for the Post, and not to be confused with the “We Can Do It” J. Howard Miller government commissioned poster gal. Rockwell’s “Rosie” cradled her riveting gun in her lap as she had her sandwich for lunch, the heel of her shoe resting on a copy of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”

When the threat from without was quashed and racial division boiled over as the threat from within, Rockwell, the visual “spokesman” for the majority of average Americans, painted “The Problem We All Live With” (1964). It depicts six-year-old African-American Ruby Bridges on her way to an all-white public school in New Orleans on November 14, 1960.  School desegregation brought threats of violence against the child’s admission, so she was escorted by four deputy U.S. marshals. The wall behind her is vandalized with the n-word and the letters "KKK".  A smashed tomato thrown at the little girl drips on the sidewalk.  Rockwell obviously felt it was his duty to tell hard truths when needed about his beloved America, and he did it as forthrightly and effectively as he did when evoking the joy of a family gathered for Thanksgiving.  He truly defined for all time “American artist.”

Your Thoughts

  1. What is your favorite Norman Rockwell painting?

Proudly presenting RocketDock skin for Android fans, Google products enthusiasts and simplicity lovers! :happybounce:
Skin is related to new Google design philosophy - Material Design, where flat interface got three dimensions. Material Design comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

More color variants and KKMenu skin coming soon! Stay updated! Heart

1. How to use it?
Just copy content of the Skins folder to X:\Program Files\RocketDock\Skins (where X is letter of disk where RocketDock was installed), run RocketDock, click right mouse button on your dock and choose Dock Settings... . Then select Style tab and select one of them from Theme list.

2. Where I should place content of Additional_icons folder?
Everywhere where you want. It's doesn't matter, because you can add folders with your own icons in Icon Settings... section.

3. How to make new icons look like the dark icons from Additional_icons folder?
    a) resize your existing icon to 186x186px,
    b) create new image with your graphics software in 256x256px resolution,
    c) just paste the content of your resized icon to new canvas/workspace,
    d) save as *.png and enjoy.

More Material Design icons you will find here:
materialdesignicons.com/

4. Indicator.
Turn off RocketDock and copy Indicator.png file from Indicator folder to X:\Program Files\RocketDock\Defaults\DefaultIndicator (where X is letter of disk where RocketDock was installed) - overwrite file, remember to backup default Indicator.png file.

Make sure you have selected one of the Static themes as your current theme.
Click on "Window Color" at the buttom of the window.
Then click "Advanced appearance settings".
Then on the new window find 3D Objects in the dropdown menu under "Item:"
Then just make sure that both "Color 1" and "Color" are white.
Click OK and Save Changes and you should be done.

Another concept/mock-up from me. (Actually never intended to upload it, but... carry on reading)
I did this one in Photoshop CS6 (started in CS5.1), for CS6 testing purposes. I gotta admit, it's like 30% faster than CS5.1 and twice as fast as CS4, also I like the new filters and GUI, tho there are some things that keep bugging me, like the anti-aliased tool cursors, new "advanced" crop tool and layer colors which I frequently click instead of "merge group" option.

About the picture. Basically what you see here is something you would expect from Windows 7 user/XP lover and Win8 "tester" in one.

Fixed Control panel button
Removed refresh button
Added shutdown option
Changed Tray direction (vertical)

I did try and add the weather forecast but i couldnt change the font attributes so i left this out.

I will be adding more features but i feel this is as far as i go with a public release as it hasnt got hardly any attention so i feel im wasting my energy updating it.
